Love.. The...Music! As I am looking out my window and surveying my garden, there is a deep peace and serenity about it all. Like your garden, there is a rewarding sense of continuing growth, and the quiet resignation of things that have completed their life cycle, and have given way to the future promise of the coming Spring. Fall is my favorite season. It's the season for contemplation, I think. And we have so little time for such a thing in our world. I don't know how you make the time to share so much and yet carry the full schedule I know you must bear. But, those of us who watch are the better for it. Have a great holiday season!

Your garden in Nov looks better than a lot of gardens in June. You have so much going on when most gardens are completely gone. I still have a bunch of stuff, broccoli, brussel sprouts, lettuce, spinach, carrots, leeks, celery, some flowers, a bunch of herbs and even green beans in a large insulated cold frame. My new projects for next spring were put on hold to create a jumping worm proof leaf mold bin, almost complete (will post a video when finished). I'm glad I am not the only one who has a lot of bed cleaning left before the snow begins to fly. Enjoy your videos!

Well here in North Central Idaho zone 6a we have our garden all cleaned up with rye+hairy vetch growing in some places and grass clippings over all my beds. I am still wanting to get a bunch of leaves down but this last week has been very wet. We had about 3" of snow yesterday and then on top of that we got about 4.5" of rain and now all the snow is gone and we are having a 30mph wind storm. So I am setting in my shop watching your videos and thinking of all the things that I didn't get done last year and looking forward to planning for next year. I also raise Red wiggler worms and make compost out of mowed hay from our place so I have been getting that all set up for winter. I live near a town with lots of trees so I have gotten set up with the school district and the city to pick up bags of leaves to add to the garden and worms/compost so it is still busy. The weather is causing some issues with gathering leaves but we will get what we get. Thank you for all your informative videos, they have really inspired me to be a better gardener. I appreciate that you also use a modified no/till method with varying bed types. Please keep the videos coming because they help us all to focus on what we have in common and also that we can learn from each other and boy do we need that in our world today! Thanks for the peaceful approach to life. Have a great Holiday Season and Thank You Jenna from Idaho

Very nice. I am picking cabbage, broccoli, and waiting on a hard frost to harvest some collards. It is suppose to be in the low 80's here today and Sunday. Close to records. I took your advice and have some tomatoes in my small greenhouse. So far so good on the tomatoes. I envy your brussel sprouts because I have never been able to grow them here without a lot of care. It is just too hot here in the fall to get them going and if you wait too long to put plants out in the fall they will not grow. Great video!

My zone 5b garden is pretty much cleaned up already. I still need to wait to cut back my asparagus. It's been too warm to do that. I've also waited longer than usual to plant my garlic due to the unusual warmth. My garden already has a nice layer of chopped dried leaves on it with a layer of fresh homemade compost on top, just enough to keep the leaves in place due to upcoming 50 mph winds. Sadly I planted my broccoli and cauliflower too late this summer for a fall harvest. Good luck with your clean-up. I know I ended up with several large compost piles. You should have compost coming out of your ears next year, but I know it's never enough.

I’m tempted to try growing loofahs next year. Your chard looks amazing. My garden seems to be allergic to growing the stuff. What will you do with all of those pumpkins and squash? That’s a lot of vitamin A. After seeing your video on Hugelkultur, and making the mistake of telling people about it, I got to build one forty foot hugel bed for one person, and converted three raised beds into hugels. Woooooo... that’s a workout. Oddly, I’m hoping to build more next year. I blame you. 😜
@GrowfullywithJenna
@GrowfullywithJenna Жыл бұрын
They are so much fun to grow- you should definitely give the loofahs a try! There is something about my soil that plants like chard loves, it just thrives here. It's been several years since I've had a soil test done, but I've been meaning to retest and see if I can figure out what it is that makes them so happy! And the pumpkins are shared amongst all the family, but we do a lot of soups and casseroles and things like that. Your comment on the hugelkultur made me laugh. My experience is so similar- it IS a lot of work, but there's something almost addictive about it. I keep plotting out places for more and more beds (interesting side note- the proper term for a hugelkultur bed is a hügelbeet 😆).

Also waiting on some cauliflower that have been totally in the shade but as the leaves drop I'm hoping they start getting enough sun to enlarge the tiny heads that are just forming. Still getting side shoots on my broccoli that was first harvest back in June. And of course I have lettuce, endive, spinach and arugula as well as some root crops like carrots radishes and parsnips I'm planning on harvesting through the winter. You still have a great deal of food in your gardens! I'm down to three varieties of cold hardy lettuce, spinach, and Verde da Taglio chard. I have been amazed at my purple Alyssum. We've had at least a half dozen hard frosts and it still looks good. I thought it was more fragile than that. I struggled with my soil this year, after using bagged composted cow manure that may have contained Grazon. Still not sure. I sent off a soil sample to UNH to see where it stands, before I add any amendments this fall. I should be getting the results any day now.

Said he would water only while planting and if you water cause plants to have shallow roots and if left alone they dig deep roots and do just fine.Something for my next season tomatoes test. Because of far back a few of my tomatoes did get less than half the amount of most and of 5 different types of gardening they came in second place and first as to less effort. My best tomatoes system was my old method and about 20 percent of your influence. I did agree with about everything that you said I added more drainage and mulch around was my biggest change taught by you

I've had some light frosts/freezes but managed to keep my nightshades and beans alive although many of them look somewhat beat up (especially eggplants). Even the malabar spinach looks alive although I've picked all the decent sized leaves so it's only a few tiny side shoots that are proof that it's still in ok condition. The peppers and tomatillos are still trying to pump out more fruit even though they're ripening like 20x slower than in summer... Fava beans are in full bloom and have some pods growing. Peas are just starting to flower so might have to plant them earlier/start indoors/pick a sunnier spot next fall. Radishes and arugula are doing great. That Romanesco Broccoli I planted in early May that went through summer without bolting... still has no head formation in sight. It's 3.5ft tall now. Meanwhile the burney broccoli beside it is barely 1ft tall and across, and produced 17 heads (heads only 1.5-2" across, but hey, 17 is a lot). Guess I'll have to try some of those varieties from Johnnys you recommended for the Romanesco because this variety is not working. BTW have you ever grown passion flowers? I know you're mostly into vegetables but it's a fun thing I got into this year. I'm growing Maypop (hardy to zone 5) and Bluecrown (hardy to zone 6). We'll see if they're as hardy as the online websites claim - I'm zone 6 so theoretically they should both survive. We'll also see if the lower parts of the stems, which have gotten woody, are able to survive, or only the root system. I'm interested in some other varieties too since they look really cool, but those would have to be overwintered indoors.
@GrowfullywithJenna
@GrowfullywithJenna Жыл бұрын
Such a wonderful batch of veggies you have going in, Nicolas! Sorry to hear that Romanesco is still not heading. I planted 'Incense' passsion flower a few years back because my daughter loves them, but sadly, it did not make it. @@GrowfullywithJenna I'm curious how your more typical midwest zone 6 compares to my zone 6 in terms of overwintering plants supposedly hardy to zone 5-6. I haven't tried growing any zone 6 hardy plants yet. Zone 5 plants tend to do very well, although some (ex Butterfly Bush) will die back to the base on cold winters. Rose of Sharon does great. Trying to think what else has zone 5 as the cut-off. Most of the perennials grown here are hardy to zone 4 or even zone 3 so they aren't very good indicators of how harsh/mild our winters are. There's a couple magnolias in my neighbourhood with very large leaves, I think they might be Umbrella Magnolia (also zone 5+). Our annual low might be similar to Zone 6 central Ohio but our winter mean temps are 5F colder and frost depth and duration of cold is greater. I took cuttings of the passionflowers to be safe. I'll also be mulching them heavily and pilling snow onto them (easy since they're next to my driveway). Did you take any measures to try to overwinter yours? Seems your variety is supposed to be hardy to zone 6. Do you remember if it was a colder or warmer than average winter that killed it? And I'm assuming you planted it in the spring so it would have time to develop its root system properly?

@@Lochness19 Our average minimum is -10° to -5° F. But we have a lot of flucuation from warmish to cold during the winter (which actually tends to cause more issues with plants than if it would just get cold and stay cold). We also don't have snow cover for most of the winter and a lot of harsh, drying north and west wind. I'm not sure what the mean temp is. I didn't take any measures to overwinter mine, though it was in a bit more protected spot.
@Lochness19
@Lochness19 Жыл бұрын
@@GrowfullywithJenna It sort of stays cold here, but not as consistently as in Ontario zone 4-5. We'll occasionally get temperatures in the 40s, maybe even 50s, leading to mid-winter thaws. And we can get intense cold before the snow arrives too like last year we had several 0-5F lows while the ground was bare before the Jan 17-18 snowstorm and the roses did not seem to have liked that. For the most part it's between 5F and 40F though (in Jan-Feb).

You always do such an awesome job Jenna 😎👽🤘🔥 you might want to look into using amino acid preferably from NPK Raw Nutrients or brewing your own chaga mix (chaga is high in amino acid especially if you add milk, milk is a good source of amino acids as well) the amino acid mixed with calcium and silica acts like Fix-A-Flat in a plant like when you run over a nail and your car tire and is pretty much fine,the cells in the plant suck up the calcium and silica 1,000 times faster with the amino acid and the cells in the plant crystallize around any frost crystals puncturing the cell and it crystallizes around any mold spores trying to puncture the cells keeping any kind of mold from spreading..as a cover crop you might want to try using nettles even though it would be a pain in the booty getting poked all the time because in the high-end cannabis growing community they are using nettles as a cover crop because it really helps the plant take up nutrients with the roots acting in a symbiotic way along with nettles making a supreme compost (nettles are also almost as medicinal as cannabis so you can brew tea out of them as well to help heal the body, when you boil nettles it takes the sting away so you're not going to be drinking anything that's going to be pokey)

Thank you! And thanks for the advice. Nettles have so many amazing uses- they grow wild in the wetter areas around us and I've harvested them for tea, but never gave much though to using in compost and such!

Looking at your garden, was wondering do you clean up your garden before winter? I'm in central Ohio and I already cleaned my up. Maybe I shouldn't have cleaned it up so soon? Let me know. I didn't plant any broccoli, lettuce, celery, spinach and carrots, etc. in late summer either. I always have issues with it . I will try again in the spring and then in late summer.

Hello Jenna, frost blanket question, do you leave them on only when temp is expected to be in 30s? Do you leave them on at night only if the temps are 40-50s during day? I have cool weather crops I’m trying to extend the harvest with. I double layered some of the frost blankets for the really cold nights. I’m also experimenting with zucchini under the frost blankets (started in august) but it’s a gamble without a greenhouse. I hand pollinated one of the mature female flowers but the Stigma turned black and doesn’t appear to be growing. I’m not sure if the cold is affecting it or some kind of issue with Blossom End Rot? I also may have prematurely opened the female flower slightly by hand b/c I had a mature male filled with pollen and wanted to get the process started. Either way, I know it’s a long shot for November zucchini in zone 7A
@GrowfullywithJenna
@GrowfullywithJenna Жыл бұрын
Full disclosure- I really only use frost blankets on my cold hardy stuff, not on anything frost tender like zucchini. Sometimes if we are having several stretches of nighttime temps in the mid to low 20's to teens, I'll just keep the frost covers on all day & night, even it it gets up to 40 or 50 in the day. But I generally try to remove the covers during the day if it's above 40 and especially if it's sunny.

With the colder weather, do the insects that live on brassicas/kale/cabbage die off, or do you still have to be mindful of them? Thank you!

They've started to die off somewhat, but won't be totally killed off till we're regularly getting below freezing. Unfortunately, the pests that plague brassicas are often as cold tolerant as the brassicas themselves!

I have some Jersey early Wakefield cabbage that have not yet headed up under frost blanket, how long does it take for them to form heads or is it too cold? Additionally Brussel sprouts approx 14” tall small buds on them no sprouts yet, and a few cauliflower under frost blankets, massive leaves no head yet, is it too late for all of these to finish?
@GrowfullywithJenna
@GrowfullywithJenna Жыл бұрын
I know that here in Ohio, they would not finish heading up at this time of year- too cold & days are too short. But since you're a full zone south, I'm not sure. As long as your days are above freezing, they may still have a chance- so I'd give them a little more time.

@GrowfullywithJenna
@GrowfullywithJenna Жыл бұрын
I've not had problems on my brassicas in particular, but it has been a bad year for aphids in general. I typically use an insectidical soap when I need to treat things like aphids or white flies (I tend to have more trouble with these in the greenhouse than outdoors) and like this particular product: www.gardensalive.com/product/plant-guardian-houseplant-insecticidal-soap-2817 It says 'houseplant' but works on outdoors plants as well.

I heavily rely on insect netting. I cover them as soon as I set transplants out and keep them covered till they outgrow the netting. Typically once I take the netting off, they're quite close to maturity and some insect feeding doesn't hurt them... but if it gets too bad I do rely on BT sprays to keep the cabbageworms at bay.
