@@mecahhannah The Gentleman Bastard sequence is a great series but I can totally understand if you want to wait until more of it is complete before you start reading. According to the author's official website [1] the plan is for seven novels. The first book came out in 2006, the second in 2007, the third in 2013 and the fourth book is due out in August 2021. Based on the pace of the author it looks like it will be a while before the whole series is complete. @@mecahhannah Wikipedia says there are seven in the series and actually names them. It also states he plans a follow-up series of seven novels afterward with different characters but apparently the same setting.

Any time I hear about books with animal protagonists, I think of one in particular. The Hunt for Elsewhere, by Beatrice Vine. Not gonna lie, it somehow has Letters to the Lost vibes (though that may be because I read them around the same time of year...) but that aside, the flawed characters and real friendships just make it so worth it. I Bad things happen of course, but it's not brutal. It's a journey, in more than one sense, and the CHARACTER GROWTH!! It's a book that sticks with you.

I have a hard time with Call of the Wild too. Personally, my favorite Jack London book is The Sea Wolf, which I think is very underrated. I think you might enjoy it more since The Sea Wolf is very character-driven and explores a variety of philosophical ideas while at the same time being an adventure story in the setting of a seal-hunting ship in the Pacific. The two characters that are seen the most (and juxtaposed) are Wolf Larson, the highly intelligent, ruthless sea-captain, and Humphrey van Weyden, a sheltered, literary-critic landsman who has been shanghaied onto the ship when he is picked up from the middle of San Fransico Bay after the ferry he was on sunk. There are definitely some flaws in the book, but in my opinion, it is very much worth a read.

In fiction i read almost the complete First Law trilogy (~30% of he last book left). But my favorite this month (if you can even call a book on such a subject a favorite) was "Poisoner in Chief" about Sidney Gottlieb and The CIA search for mind control techniques. It's equal parts bizarre and horrifying what you can delude yourself into doing when you are sure you are playing on team "good guys" (and it's an interesting contrast to Glokta's inner monlogue at the start of "First Law"), including trying implant posthypnotic commands in helpless subjects by drugging and electroshocking them so they could be sleeper agents for the CIA),

I liked the Duke and I but mainly because I like the way the writer writes. The beginning is much better than the rest of the book, I agree. I also think your review was very fair, the things you pointed out are things I also had problems with. I think his psychological healing was also really hushed and not believable... I give it a 3,5 because I'm very much into the genre and said genre has intricate problems repeated in almost all books of same genre.

Merphy, have you ever read anything by Agatha Christie, I love her books, they're short but very entertaining, not to mention that all her mystery books have very good endings, because they make sense. I highly recomend "And then there were none" it's about a group of people that get stranded on an island in England, and then they start dying one by one in a way described by a nursery rhyme. It's very good I also think you would love the Hercule Poirot series. Agatha Christie is the queen of mystery

The thing with H.G Wells is he's a movie writer who lived before movies were out in the world. He's very visual, and he is very high concept. There's a reason why so many of his books have been adapted to movies and have been highly rated. The Original Invisible man is a classic. The Time Machine is like nerd heaven when they see anything with it. You've said you don't prefer T.V and Movie media and there is a language that H.G Wells speaks to with people who enjoy and are well versed in the medium. I think you may like Jules Verne better. I'm not sure if I spelled his name right, but he's the author of Journey to the Center of the Earth, From the Earth to the Moon, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. He's also a very visual writer, but he's more of a literary visual writer. You said you like the concepts of H.G Wells but not the writing so give him a try if you haven't already. I have two sons so I may read the Son book. I'm one of Six and when my brothers were teens my Mom started reading books like Why Boys need a Mom and Why Girls Need a Dad and she found them interesting. I feel now I should read books like that now that I'm a mom of two boys.

[spoilers for Wuthering Heights below] . . . . . . I agree with you that Wuthering Heights is a tragedy and focuses largely on families, but I also think the story is not entirely tragic. We see how Heathcliff is caught in the cycle of abuse and becomes the abuser, but we also see how Hareton and Cathy junior are able to overcome their flaws and break the cycle. So although the story is tragic, I don't see it as only that. I feel like the ending is hopeful. The struggle between nature and nurture is a theme in the book as well. Is Heathcliff born "bad" (a "devil" as some of the characters call him), or does he become this way through all the abuse and prejudices against him? (I personally prefer the second interpretation here.) And Catherine senior's love triangle is also all about nature versus nurture: she chooses material pleasantries over passion and regrets this when Heathcliff returns.

You need to watch the old Universal movie of the Invisible Man it is very good. The new movie is not a good adaptation.

The invisible man already has a movie that was made in the 30's that isn't really a horror movie (at least not to me)

LOL 🤣 🤣 "The Duke and I" sounds like "Wuthering Heights". That's the book that immediately came to mind when you describe the Duke and I. WH, I hate that book!! I hated the characters. The characters were assholes and it romantasize the obsessive love crap. I don't know if I'll ever get Wheel of Time. So loooooooooonnnng. I like your approach to reading series. One a month. I get overwhelmed with picking a series. So many. Ruth Ware's books I have a love hate relationship with her books 😕. So many people read her books and continue to be mixed feelings. I don't think I will continue reading her. Out of all her books. I've only liked one.

I can’t tell if I’m just not meant for thrillers. I did not totally like Turn of The Key. The kids and the main girl were annoying. The creepy part was decent but kind of a back seat after thought. The secrets revealed at the end were great but getting there was a bore.

I get the feeling about endings sometimes ruining books. That was me with The Offshore Pirate by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It just turned basically what made the story interesting and vibrant into a lie. And I understand why but I don't like it

I would like you to go deeper in your own personal experience of the book. It would be great to learn why you came to like or dislike the stories. Maybe you want to open up all of your senses whilst reading and criticizing. So you will learn a lot about yourself too. Good idea with great potential!

If book 6, of Wheel of Time, is your least favorite, then you are in for a ride. It gets worse from there. Wait until you read book 10, where nothing happens.

I just finished the turn of the key and I COMPLETELY AGREE. The execution and build up was spot on! But man, wow, that ending was rough and ruined so much of the book for me.... overall didn’t like it, very hard to rate indeed. So disappointed

H G Wells was not a woman. His name was Herbert George Wells. Some TV shows like to gender-bend the author when they include him as a character.
