When I tell my coworkersI'm listening to African missionary music, they all think I'm fucked, but I'm not?. This song helped me get trough some shit.

ALWAYS LOVE OVER GOLD! don't talk shit on mississippi records. the dude that runs that store is so nice. every time i go in there he gives me deals on his stuff. his records are all priced very reasonably. i honestly doubt he makes much money on them at all, if any. his goal is to distribute music that he loves in hopes that others will find as much enjoyment out of it as he does. if you have to feel sick, feel sick about real world issues. he's doing something amazing.

Ah, that was a good answer! 6 years later, considering the state of things, streaming and sampling, how'd you feel? copy-wright?

Been living on welfare myself for the last ten yrs and I don't see how a few copyright bucks would have changed my fate! Things like " my understanding is that vast amountsof those contracts are exploitative at root, with little to none going to the artist at all, legally." sound so bourgeois with good intentions.

@brainbeau- your concern is true enough. pls keep in mind that lp was pressed at 1000 copies and sold at 10 dollars a piece. a bootleg no doubt, but really... and consider sterns. thats who they didn't license from. how much do you know about the original artist/studio contracts from whence sterns derives its legality? my understanding is that vast amountsof those contracts are exploitative at root, with little to none going to the artist at all, legally.

as someone who's been to the shop many times- i believe that they believe their slogan "love over gold". this record is out of print after the first run and is going to stay that way. good luck to anyone ever finding this material beyond paying 60+ bucks for a used copy from a collector or copping a free blogspot vinyl rip. neither source will be sending any royalties back to west africa.

Hello @Ghost Capital, thank you very much for this outstanding music. I cannot find the corresponding page on your blog. Do you have the rest of the album? Where to find it? I cannot find it on the Mississippi Records website either. Help me, I beg you, dear friend!

Unfortunately, that could say that about 95% of records ever released. While Mississippi Records seems to be a self-sustaining venture, it is clear from the very limited pressings of their releases that they are not reaping any rewards other than putting beautiful music that would never be heard by you nor I were it not for them. Pick your battles.

also, mississippi has also since changed their practice and "legitimized", we'll say. if you come up on any records that arent public domain, you'll see "licensed from arhoolie, sterns", etc on the flipside. since the public pr shaming they took from sterns and friends in nyc they've come around to work with these same guys. hey long rant. sorry. ultimately, i believe you're point to be right on, but i felt compelled to voice my understanding of the subtext therein. peace.

This record label has alledgedly reissued material without paying royalties to the musicians involved, some of which live their old age in poverty while the cultural capitalists reap all the rewards! Beautiful music, but not beautiful enough to stop me from feeling sick...
