MS170, my favorite little saw. Bought it for $20 at an auction, put an adjustable carb on it and it's my EDC saw. Thirsty little bugger but handy for when you need to cut some brush or a limb.

Hey Good video! You’ll figure it out I see that passion of I’ll get it or die trying!! Got 2 of these 170’s. One says made in USA the other China Tryed all that stuff. Adjustable 250 carb big boy chain. 250 clutch drum with 7 rim drive. Just used more gas and less power .043 bar and chain and original carb cuts faster. Didn’t port it just MM. l think you may have smoked it. Little saws at 14000 need more oil 25:1. And full Syn tends to glaze cyl ‘s Hate any saw that doesn’t run good. I have many brands. Usually something I’ve overlooked if it’s acting up. Can’t wait for the next great “ I figured it out video “ 👍

Get the same headaches wit a 136,or a 142. I had a batch of them little turds that would round the end of the ring off and lose all compression in about five minutes.

I find it hilarious you blame Stihl for it not running after all the mods you did.

Well, this is the first time I've modded a saw and it just won't run for some unexplainable reason. My little 42cc craftsman is still running like a squirrel on meth. I friggin cheap ass Craftsman!

@@novicelumberjack I had zero issues with my 170 saw fest build. It's actually pretty impressive for 30cc. I, however, didn't change the blow down numbers. Didn't touch the uppers at all in fact. I'll email you a vid of it.

@lukereynolds9907 I probably am... They probably had years to develop this little turd of a saw, and a whole team of them as well. I've had one mistake so far. It's figured out now, on to the next one. Steve, I got the video and pictures of your build. It looks excellent! Can't wait to see it in action!

I have had pretty good luck with my Stihl, just cutting up downed trees and limbs. It has never failed to start and cuts great when I got rid of that safety chain that came on it. I run a full chisel RS now and wow what a saw!

Maybe like Poulan- they barely have enough compression to run with a 106 exhaust. Maybe 103 is too much.

Never messed with a 170. Whats "normal" static compression? It does seem low. If it doesn't just want a ton more fuel, maby as Matt said, break the glaze with a hone or sandpaper before trying another cylinder🤷🏻‍♂️ has the ignition timing been advanced yet? I had a poulan p3314 who's P&C looked perfect yet only 105 psi compression. For some reason ran like a scalded dog after timing advance!

Excellent video and maybe just a fluke. Put it together and see what it does? Compression loss is mystery and seemed like fuel delivery problem.

My bet is on fueling issue because it ran for a moment when you squirted fuel in the carb at 6:46. Plugged carb or cracked fuel or impulse line.

I'm leaning more toward a fuel delivery problem snd not as much of a compression issue. Did you get the compression reading before you done the port work to compare it to? Keep up the cool vids man!!!

Out of all the saws I've owned throughout the years, the Stihls were the only ones to ever get thrown. You're right. It's always Stihl. That's just one of the many reasons why I sold every Stihl I've ever owned. If it's not a new $1,300 pro saw from Stihl, it's disposable. They should put an expiration date label right next to the serial number.

@@novicelumberjack always one of two things that I see with these and that is either a field coil or a carburetor so far out of adjustment that it can't be remedied with the non-adjustable carburetor that comes stock. I get these stupid things given to me all the time and if I can turn them around with a coil or a Amazon card for 20 bucks, I give them away to people.
