L canceling deepens the defensive options, which is the secret to melee's beauty. L canceling has a variable timing because of when you hit, and you can choose to light/hard/power shield to make your opponent mess up and punish them for punishing them. But most people try to just use movement to punish anyway
@kianjelogiorgio17134 жыл бұрын
Exactly, auto l cancel takes away from people actually doing the move, and it gives people free sheild pressure
@wes84484 жыл бұрын
Idk I’m not really on either side but like. Lcanceling doesn’t really add depth because it’s not a choice. Every other advanced tech has alternatives. Wavedashing/dashing, shield drop/Jump out of shield, ledge dash/edge guard or jump to ledge. Lcancel has no alternative therefore not “real” depth
@ClassicBentobox4 жыл бұрын

The main reason I am an advocate for preservation is that if you go to an IRL tournament at some point, they may not be running Dolphin, they may not let you set up your own controls, they may not have your tap jump disable mod, they may not have L-cancelling set up, and that's even before you talk about if they *should* or not. Changing the way people can play in practice inhibits their potential future in the game, and eliminates their opportunity to in the long run. Why choose that for anyone? Accessibility isn't worth it if it reinforces long-term bad habits.
@gingerale15914 жыл бұрын
@Adam Thompson The thing with modding Melee is that Nintendo is definitely against it. A lot of big tourneys don't even run UCF, which accounts for random variance between controllers, because Nintendo doesn't support modding Melee in any way.

Personally, I think having things like UCF and slippi are amazing for melee and help build the community. But I do have concerns when introducing things like auto L canceling. I believe that making melee easy to access is very important, but ease of access does not mean making mechanics easier. Part of the magic in melee is seen when someone does a cool combo. Was it a sick combo that you haven’t seen before? Probably, and that’s cool enough. But what makes even better is the fact that you know how hard it is to do a similar combo yourself. There’s so many technical aspects going into that combo that you have just that much more appreciation and respect for what that player just did. If you have a different view, feel free to drop a comment below so we can discuss more!
@Xrelent4 жыл бұрын
Back when I played a lot, there was a point where L-cancelling became a pretty free part of my gameplay except during abiguity/whiffs. I even started to learn double shoulder L-cancelling so I wouldn't ever miss an L-cancel, but I lost motivation when I realized I was adding yet another rote input to my slowly dying spacie hands. On the other side, I will admit that there is a certain thrill to mastering L-cancelling and pulling combos you never thought you would be able to do. It just got annoying once I got good at it, and I found it unsatisfying when I would cheese newer players who hadn't mastered L-cancelling.

just to hammer in how insane of a feat of engineering slippi is. While Ultimate is a game with multiple full time developers with access to source code working on it's netcode. Yeah my biggest gripe with melee is L-canceling. It’s so dumb because there’s no reason not to do it, but it’s so dumb that u have to do it.
@moosemeep36944 жыл бұрын
Lettuce God If a new game was made L canceling should not be in it. Like rivals did a good job with replacing L canceling. Because all L canceling is is an execution test. But in melee’s case, the game is kind of balanced around that execution test being there and removing l canceling would buff spacies. And to me, difficulty is a big part of what makes things impressive to see. Like how cool would proffessional basketball be if you could walk outside and instantly shoot as well as the pros? Not very impressive. You know how hard they had to practice to become that good and that makes it cool to see. Melee and basketball would not be as cool if you could be that good instantly. And that’s what some people want when they complain about L canceling. They want to be good but they don’t want to practice. Just because something is “optimal every time” doesn’t mean its bad. Especially because of things like L cancel timings being different if you whiff, or hit someone or their shield. And if you know someone is going to use an aireal and L cancel it, you can hit them and they will be locked out of teching because they L canceled

I have no idea what on earth you guys are talking about. Melee has ALWAYS been newcomer friendly. It's easier to get into than a traditional 1v1 fighting game like Street Fighter. My friends, my family and I don't use L-canceling because none of us know or care about it. Learning these advanced exploits is only useful if you plan on playing against advanced players at tournaments and such. But if you always get paired with these advanced players online then that's a problem with the pairing system. And if there are no casual players online then that is an issue with the fanbase being too elitist, not the game itself.

I don't think I've seen a game with movement as polarized as Melee's. When you're good, it looks and feels incredible. When you're bad, it feels like complete ass. I hadn't really thought about it before this video, but I think you're right about Melee's difficulty contributing to its longevity. To use an overused metaphor properly, Melee is the Dark Souls of platform fighters, and maybe even fighting games in general. When you first begin, it sucks. It feels like everything is working against you. But as you slowly start to master it, that hostility turns to empowerment. And it's this promise of conquering adversity that draws players to both games. Saying "I beat Dark Souls" or "I can play Melee competently" is a badge of honor. You _earned_ those bragging rights. This is mostly from what I can tell from observation. I'm bad at Melee, so the game still feels like ass to me. But damn is it fun to watch.

8:13 I see the argument but I've always felt that removing L-canceling and having a little more buffer doesn't make the game easier, it just raises the average skill ceiling. Instead of learning how to press a button every time you land with an aerial you learn better micro spacing or edge guarding flowcharts. I want the challenge and focus of a fighting game to be centered on beating my opponent, not my own ability to learn the nuances of the game engine. Using rivals as an example, the base game is sick and easy to play with friends, anyone can learn to wave dash and stuff, its physically easier. But that doesn't make the game any easier at a competitive level, you just shift your focus to other things.
@saigesmart41674 жыл бұрын
@FlashFire1999 I didn't realize that was a tactic, thanks for informing me. That does add to the argument to keep it in, but overall I think I stand by the opinion that the game is better without L-canceling. Not saying we should remove it now, it's too late for that, but would have been better without it in the game in the first place. I am curious though, how hard is it to mess up your opponent's L-cancel and how hard is the counter play (ie recognizing they are doing it and how hard it is to then change your own timing)?

regarding the accessibility issue, I wouldnt care if the game gets easier. I wouldnt care if they gave it auto-L canceling and auto-perfect wavedash and all that. I WOULDNT care if not the semi-unfortunate truth is that the inputs for those things actually greatly impact the interplay in game. Because of hitlag and shieldstun, those few frames where the world freezes when someone gets hit, moreso when on shield, because of those, there's this whole internal meta-game of shielding and spotdodging to bait out missed L-cancels and punishes. Because spotdodging doesnt have these frozen frames, spotdodging is a tool to hard read an attack on shield and get a free punish this way. With some of the slower and mid-tier characters this is important to use because their other options arent as good. While I think a buffer system would make the game much easier to start playing, I think they would disproportionately effect certain characters more than others. A buffer system would affect how Fox and Falco are played to a much higher degree than any other character simply because of how much harder they are to use. Multishines would suddenly become something anyone could do with a little practice and shield pressure interactions especially shine aerial on shield would be completely different. Customizable controls mostly seem dubious when I consider pivoting in the meta game today. Even at a high level, there are only one or two people i've heard of who can perform a pivot up/down tilt. Customized controls would totally change the usability of those techniques further changing the game not at an accessibility level but from a metagame level.

most TVs have a lot of lag. (here's some more info on the topic kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGelZadrm6h4mLM). Honestly the most newbie friendly way to play melee right now is through an emulator like the video suggests. Here's a video to help you get set up kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6vEqI1oo8ahq5I

I think a good way to appease both sides would to make a mod for melee in the style of project M, where more characters are viable, and more beginner friendly. That way there is something to try if you like melee but just can’t get into it.

Melee as community and as a Game, I respect them and it. I played Melee, I owned all Smash games in fact. But I prefer Smash Ultimate since the characters have always been at the core for me and the gameplay is way better than Brawl and Smash 4 at least. While I won't get into Melee anytime soon, I do know the effect it has on the Smash community who care about the deep gameplay aspect for the competitive scene.

This is very reasonable. The only problem is that Ultimate has worse online than melee now.

I tried Melee as a 4 and Ultimate player and I liked it. I didn't love it though as the lack of a buffer system really threw me off. That's just me speaking though, I'm glad so many people love the game.

as someone coming from melee when ever I put down melee for a bit and play a lot of ult when I come back to melee I have tons of bad habits. I've stopped using a game cube controller for ult, and instead I've started using a pro controller, and it's helped me stop trying to buffer in melee

the buffer system in melee would have to be totally redone to allow for tilt stick and other control remapping. which means someone would have to reorder buffer priority for every character and every move in the game. even to simply add auto short hop aerial moves would require a fundamental change to how the game reads inputs.

I think the reason why auto l cancel shouldn't be allowed is because it would make spacies extremely broken: fox drill, as an example, has 6 hits that can be sdi'd so there's no way you will be able to properly l cancel it and a combo off of it every time, but, with auto l canceling you will and you will always get your combo.

I am new to Melee. I joined when Slippi began, and it is a difficult game. I would think that L-Cancels and buffer should be kept as is. I do believe more controller options should be available.

idk I feel like it would drastically effect the meta. Being able to rebind would make things like multi shining wayy easier and fox/falco shine pressure completely free.

Plus they already changed one main thing which was controller variance thanks to ucf you don't have to spend hundreds on a good controller this was a big change fixing things like dashback issues not necessarily needing notches for shield drops etc

I’m just excited to see mods for the game that either change existing characters and adding new one to the game. Obviously you can’t just change melee and add balance updates and things like that, but project M was very well liked and having a whole new game on melees engine would be exiting.

Ace shinigami Project+ is a brawl mod, and it overdoes it with the rebalancing. Too many gimmicks with a roster as big as it is. RoA players would like it though, I'd recommend it over melee.

@@MyAce8 nah, P+ is just a completely different game. I you ask me, it adds significantly more to the smash experience than it takes away though, and is 100% my personal preference. unfortunately, there's no rollback, and smashladder is not always active. So im stuck with shitass melee.

melee is amazing, it's great as it is, it probably won't change anytime soon for weird reasons but if people are really debating if lowering the skill floor of a game while maintaining and/or rising the skill ceiling is good or not then you have me at a loss. The fact that UCF exists is proof of this: when shield dropping became easier, melee evolved in a good way. new and cool strategies had to be developed to adapt to it, amazing combo game ensued. Input Buffer and auto L cancel improve the gameplay experience far more than it damages it (if it does at all), also, who wouldn't want to play competitively without the risk of getting hand issues? Hax$ and Mew2king, these guys played with painful hands for years, they surely would. This "controversy" is non existant in my eyes but i understand that it's the same kind of debate as the one dealing with wobbling and ledge grab limits. TL;DR: Melee is great but it's hard to play and doesn't need to be. It's still amazing if you have the patience to learn it.

We live in the time line where Melee online has less latency than Ultimate offline Think about that, a 20 year old game that was never intended to have online play has less input delay then a modern instalment of the same series without online And when you factor in Ultimate's online too things go from bad to awful

imo if you don't like l cancelling play PM. I think L Cancel is a bad design decision even when you consider the situation where it adds depth (using power sheild to mix up L Cancel timings, and then punishing). That being said it's part of the game, and if you don't like it there are a ton of other platform fighters to choose from. Part of what's fun about melee is it doesn't change. There aren't bug fixes, there aren't balance changes. You put down the game, and come back a few years later, and it's the same game.

For once I think setting up an emulator to play melee online is actually harder than just doing it the old way. Admittedly I have it easy because I still have my GameCube with a copy of the game, and my friends and family play it. Also, some LCD TVs support AV composite.....even though I still have my CRT from many years ago, but it's still an option.
