Definitely share the ick for everything being content now and us all being "consumers". You consume a burger, not art 😂 It's kinda crazy to me just how normalised streaming access fees are as well. Like most people I know watch the same comfort shows or movies in rotation, and often go months without actually using the service they pay for. If Friends is what you're all about, drop $50 and you'll never have to spend a dime on it for the rest of your life! Besides, once you only have access to what you own, you get a much better idea of the things you really want to watch. It's not scary people! I promise!

Content, consume, disposable media is horrible in describing entertainment. Exactly, it was recently revealed that the most streamed shows are old entertainment including Friends. At this point buy the complete series it would be better and cheaper in the long run. Great comment!

As silly as it sounds, its only going to take a Gen Zer with a massive following to make physical media cool again. Maybe we should recruit one or someone with a large following. Maybe someone like Mr. Beast? Someone out there must have a massive collection they’ e never spoken about, or someone just starting out. A few instagram shares and suddenly it’s cool again.

I definitely think Physical media and the idea of it has turned a corner over the last 6 months mainly due to the short sighted streaming companies. I think a large percentage of people are now at least accumulating their favourites as the trust in them being anywhere online has wavered.

I do too, More and more people tell me that they are buying DVDs again. Some only stream here and there. Streaming really brought this on themselves.

Easiest comparison is looking at digital in the gaming space. PC digital and the Console digital markets are wildly different markets. EA went and made their own app, and crawled back to Steam. Its like if some took their movies off netflix, realise it didnt work and crawl back to netflix. Steam have been in it since the 00's, they figured out the market and the rest are still learning.

I have a feeling that maybe streaming services will end up going bankrupt at some point especially due to all of the decisions they did that made people cancel them and go back to buying dvds, blu-rays etc. and like you said, You will never own any digital media at all

I love my movies and love having the physical copy but collecting Vinyl is very expensive and CD collecting is making a comeback P.S my son has a subscription to a heavy metal box where he gets a couple of CD's a patch a pin and in a couple of them they even included a cassette tape

Ephemeral is a good word. I learned of a documentary today, followed the URL and they want $4 for a view. While that's not expensive, how long will it be there? Is it going to disappear for good? Part of something's existence is that it exists in the real world. Can you go to the store and buy it? Can you check it out from the library? If I'm telling you about a movie, can I pick it up with my hands and show you the cover? Can I keep a copy for myself to pull off the shelf five years from now and watch again? With the advent of home video, a certain amount of permanence was introduced for movies. This was a big deal for culture, and now it's continually being lost without people noticing. When something is streaming only, and this includes "digital purchases", I assume it's going to disappear. I view it as something that's probably not going to last 20 years. It won't be rediscovered and enjoyed by future generations. It's not going to be a cult classic. Now, it's possible and it could, but there's no reason to expect it'll be there later. I prefer having things that I know will be.

Well said, and yes if you can't hold it in your hands is it truly obtainable? A lot is being lost with so much of our lives moving online, and it saddens me to see so few people realize this. I know we shouldn't let our possessions possess us, but I think it's ok to want an actual physical item to know that it's real and exist.

Don’t feel bad for gamers: They do this to themselves. We’re *all* aware of the risk we take when we “buy” anything digital. If someone chooses to take that risk, the potential loss is on them. It’s just like gambling and/or buying bad stock. Choices abound. Make good ones.

@@Andrew_TS In part, maybe, but you if you still buy knowing that digital copy may disappear, then I can’t feel too bad. That’s exactly why Greg touched on the booming bootleg market. If a studio doesn’t want to provide a legit physical copy for me to buy, someone else will. No one should choose to settle for something digital that can be taken at the drop of a hat.

@@SumDumGy Some indie developers cannot afford to mass produce Physical Media so I understand supporting those developers with Digital purchases. I know a studio that is ran by one person and he doesn't get enough income to afford to produce Physical Media. Supporting them can also lead to Physical Copies in the future. Take "Tunic" for example. They were able to make Physical Copies of their game so I bought it Physically and they did a really nice job with their Physical version and its with all the updates too. Its the AAA and big name companies that produce them Physically and buying those Digitally is giving them the win and control. They are the ones that like to screw customers over. I only buy Physical Media from them for not only protection and love of actually owning my copy, but to send a clear message that Physical Media customers are still around.
