The personal finance class is fantastic. My daughter's school has it and she just finished it. It was amazing how well it sat with these kids. Such an important age to learn these skills. Our area is very recessed, 30% at poverty. I am digging out of my debt and she is all into it and we will be paying her college with CASH. She is saving up and we are too. Reasonable state school she can live home to attend. I will change my family tree and now I know because of this class she will continue it forward.

@GenesisWilliamson-k9h10 ай бұрын
Regarding the child support question, they aren't totally correct. It's really a state by state thing. Granted, I am on the other side of the coin, but in Illinois, if I get married again, the state WILL take my new husband's income into account. Illinois takes the parents' incomes and splits the child support based on percentages and majority custody. They will assume my expenses are lower because they are now shared with my new husband and my ex would get to have his child support amount lowered. It's the #1 reason why my fiance and I aren't getting legally married until after my kids are grown. My fiance has 3 kids of his own that he dutifully pays child support for, and neither one of us thinks it's fair that his income would be supporting 6 kids. My kids dad should do his duty regardless.

The only reason they did eventually was because he attempted to get his support payment lowered because he had more kids with other women and suddenly felt he couldn't afford $196.00/month. It backfired in his face, and the state raised it instead to adjust for the cost of living increase since they had never adjusted it before. Dave should not give advice outside of his sphere of knowledge. There are three basic child support models: Income Shares Model (41 states), Melson Formula Model (3 states) and Percentage of Income Model (3 states.) Her state is the Income Shares Model - but their situation may also depend on what state the parents were in when they divorced and also where the custodial parent lives. What I CANNOT figure out about this show is that George is sitting there with a computer which he CLOSES when the show starts. (Must be the policy not to be online during the show.) If he had been able to OPEN that computer, he could have checked this out easily. No one knows everything. As the show expands into areas beyond strictly financial, what is the problem with looking up something on the computer during the show?

The hardest question to answer: How do you save up for transportation while continuing to work? - I think this is the root behind the car loan. If you dont have a car, it is more difficult to get to work. So it is easier to take out a loan, and say this is my saving for a car. But that becomes a slippy slope, that leads to credit card spending, and other debt, to the point where all of your income is accounted for, and you have no money for anything else, like food, and its even easier to do that of you are a low wage worker.
@masonr166610 ай бұрын
Transportation is easier when there is a public transportation option, but if there is no public transportation option, you are limited to walking distance, or ride sharing with coworkers. A lot of people find themselves stuck in this situation.

My home is paid off, I have no debt but my fixed expenses such as taxes, electric, phone, car insurance, home isurance have gone up. My social security has gone up only 60.00 this year in 2024.and that does not cover any fixed expense and the increase.

The caller about child support needs to see an attorney because some states take into consideration the income of a spouse. It is unfair but it is reality.
@janise0110 ай бұрын
How is it unfair? The premise of basing it on income and having exemptions is to leave the non-custodial parent enough to live on. If that parent has other means of support so their living expenses are reduced (example spouse paying half the rent or mortgage) then why shouldn't that be accounted for?

I've said this before and so have others - there needs to be a cheat sheet for the guest hosts when Dave's not on because so many of the questions that are asked are similar. One caller asked about whole life and was told it was terrible but there was no explanation given. Another wanted sell his home and his parents home and buy one together. In addition to that being a not so great idea, if either of those parents goes into a nursing home within 10 years there's a look-back period and he would have to repay a great deal of money to the government. In addition, he was young and one was ill. They were trying to hide assets and not a word was mentioned about with the government would do in that case.

@@BeeDee-qs9so They're not getting life experience sitting behind that desk. Dave learned in the real world.

@@TSos1973 Of course they are! Sitting at the desk isn’t the entirety of their jobs or their lives - they live in the “real world” too, my friend. Should they only hire old fogies with more life experience? Dave has the humility to see the way of the future, which means training and mentoring these bright young people. They have even been known to teach Dave a thing or two, which he has openly commented on and appreciated.

3# caller, should really think about, does the beach home, have a good foundation? Otherwise, it might be falling into the water.

Agreed. Beach houses are such a pain to maintain and worry about if you are only visiting a week a year. Unless you spend a lot of time at the beach, better to rent when you actually need it.
