That planar face tracker is pretty quick and certainly accurate enough. Beyond fixing textures, one of the salient problems - usually for faces - is how digital cameras tend to desaturate the shaded portions of faces. I recall being in a projection room in LA, where we showed the senior staff at Arri, an A/B comparison wipe of the dimly-lit faces in the interior (cabin) scene in "Hateful Eight". The A side showed the Panavision capture, and the B side the Alexa 65. While the film capture was very grainy it was deep, rich and colourful ; the Alexa's output was very clean but essentially grey. The colourist was saying "At least with the film I have something to hang on to - I can tweak the shade ; with the Alexa I have nothing". This was a while back and it's entirely possible that Harald Brendel subsequently tuned the AWG profile to better render dimly-lit flesh tones ; the rendition of the Alexa 35 is certainly superior to that era's tech. But if you look at the lady in the car, it's pretty clear to me that the shading on her face, while holding colour, is rather dull. All this to say that beyond tweaking the LUT itself such that dark flesh tones have more 'plenitude' one could use the planar tracker to generate a mask, which then would be intersected with a luminance mask, to focus on the shading. A laborious and costly path, no doubt, but a worthwhile one to consider for an equally expensive money shot - say for a commercial or a scene with an A-list actor. I designed a dedicated tool for this, which is shelved somewhere - it worked purely in colour space, so no tracking required, but it was tricky to use : By working in the colour domain you have less control over the morphological (spatial) effect, but you have high colour consistency. Working in the spatial domain you have more control over the gradient, etc. No one says it's easy ;-) but this sort of attention to detail is par for the course when you're doing pro work. To round up the topic I'll mention that how you treat the shade on faces is as old as oil painting itself and by itself a serious artistic topic ; you can use the sfumato technique of our forebears, as you can go wild and do Fauvism. Endless fun, no doubt.
@DarrenMostyn3 ай бұрын
Thank you for this great insight. Yes, the detail in the girls face is not so perfect as this was a commercial I worked on maybe 12 years ago now (I recall it was Canon in HD so not todays high spec). The color hue throughout a face (forehead, nose, chin etc) is an important factor and I think this FR tool helps with that. With the side light - this needs to be used super subtle - in this YT episode I over do it a bit (without being ridiculous) but I still use static power windows too for relight as the light doesn't move with a face. Im usually subtly on the sfumato side of the fence with doc work that i do a lot of - music videos - anything goes! Joy's of our art! All great talking points - love to chat more with you on this too...maybe DM on Insta ? Thanks again, Darren

Knowing Tarantino's total aversion to digital capture and displays. I'm surprised to hear about this test footage. That an Alexa was allowed anywhere near his set. Or did I misunderstand, that the Alexa 65 footage was from a different but somewhat equivalent shoot? And not actually done on the Hateful 8 set? If so, we have to consider the subtle differences that different lighting setups gives us. :)

I forgot about the side lighting feature they added to the tool. That's huge for a less processor intensive "Relight" feature that might need to shape the contrast of someone's face. I've had version 19 running for 2 or 3 weeks but hadn't actually noticed that FR was updated (I mean, I don't use it on every video I work on and I don't work on videos as my main job), so this is particularly useful information. Edit added after trying it: I don't think you mentioned this explicitly but it's noticeably faster at detecting/tracking the face in 19 than in previous versions. I used to expect 2-3 times the playing time of a clip, i.e. 10-15 fps for a video shot at 30fps. Now it tells me that it's tracking at 27fps (if you remember to disable all nodes before the FR one), i.e. a good twice the speed. Yes, my graphics card is a bit old!

In my experience with this tool as well as magic mask, the masking looks great on a still frame. But play it out and the mask just wildly jumps all over the image. I'll often go super strong on an adjustment to see it clearly / for testing as you did with the lips. Lighting usually changes any time the subject moves so it's just about impossible to get it dialed in without keyframing every frame. Granted, I haven't used v19 much as I'm rebuilding my setup ATM so maybe it's better now.
@JimRobinson-colors3 ай бұрын
I think the jumping around while animated was the problem for everyone - this new version has been updated so that it not only tracks better but you can now fix most of those situations - as Darren demonstrated above. V16 in my opinion unless it was a talking head video, it was unusable in a professional session. But I might be adding it back into my fixed node tree now. By making a compound node I can keep all ripple functionality and still be able to go inside the compound node and use the OFX.

Is there a simple, fast key combo to toggle the selected node's status (enabled to disabled AND disabled to enabled)? This would be for quick comparing of alternate variations of those node(s). I can often make a duplicate stacked clip on the Edit Page and then just toggle the top clip on/off, but with complicated situations that becomes very cumbersome. So something similar to how Control-D works on the Color Page with selected nodes (I was hoping that would do the trick, but Control-D will sync all other selected nodes to the status of the active node (when Control-D is pressed the first time), and subsequent presses will a toggle all those selected nodes on/off together. Next thought, I was hoping that Control-Shift-D would do the trick, but it appears to do nothing (HINT for BlackMagic). Any ideas? Thank you.

Option/ALT D on a Mac.

@@DarrenMostyn Thanks (anyway). Darned, the Windows "Control" key is the equivalent key for Mac's "option" key, but Control/ALT/D does nothing, darned. ALT/D, however, does toggle all nodes on/off (regardless of node selection status). Maybe a (windows user) subscriber knows if there is another keyboard combo? Again, thank you.

The problem with version 19 is that it does not find the face well or does not find it at all if the person is lying in the shot. I checked the same shots in version 18 and everything is fine there

perhaps try to rotate show 90 degrees then track it then rotate back? Ive zoomed in on previous FR to help it track then zoom back out and it held.

now if they can add aging and de aging filters to this and we would be set, I know that involves little bit of AI , but i think they can do it

If the talent waves their arms around in front of their face while talking, it looses the track. Granted, fixing it was easy: scrub to where the track was lost, find the next frame where the face was revealed and then click the Track button again. Having said that, by the 15th time, it gets tedious
@DarrenMostyn3 ай бұрын
well its not really the tool to use if thats the case as the 'effect' you are adding 'may' become visible through the arms depending what it is.
@WarrenPeaceOG3 ай бұрын
@@DarrenMostyn That's true. FWIW, I've never noticed. The effect is always subtle. In any case, Face Enhance is essential, esp. when people are used to performing cosmetic surgery to their face on a smart phone and you're making stuff for the internet. 'Can you narrow my jaw?' 'No.' 'That doesn't seem very professional.' 🤭 'Can you make me speak Japanese?' Face Enhance is an essential miracle. TBH, Face Enhance is Resolve's job in the workflow at the moment

Face refine doesn't have to be about so called 'vanity' changes...side light is a great example of this

mine flies! Have you got other stuff going on too ? tip - disable NR etc when you do face refinement and switch stuff back on after if you need more power - same for tracking in general.

She didn't really need retouching. If I did the amount I would do for broadcast or commercial you would not see it on KZbin after compression - Im explaining the tools and vocally emphasising all the time to be subtle but have to slightly excaggerate. Hope that explains - I used the same clip as I thought was nice to use the same clip I used on my original FR video 4 years ago - maybe being too nostalgic. Hope you got something out of the video anyway. Thank you Barbaros.
