WHERE to put Noise Reduction in your DaVinci Resolve Node Tree PLUS 2 Tips on How I dial in the CORRECT amount. Using a BBC job I worked on recently I'll show you the actual project and how I fixed the noise. There are certainly dedicated 3rd party plug-ins that do a better job on Noise Reduction but Resolve is still a great tool and this episode will help you maximise this tool in the Studio version.
The subtitle/captions have been checked by me personally and corrected for any errors.
A huge thanks to Will and Tommy for letting me use this project to give you a real insight. Watch the full award-nominated documentary on the BBC iPlayer here

Another great video, your presenting style is fantastic, clear, concise and easy to follow, none of the usual KZbin fluff to extend runtimes and feed the algorithm. This video dropped at the perfect time, as I have about 5+hours of footage to clean up, that was shot in very challenging conditions, never thought to do it via the scopes 🤦‍♂️, I have got much better results following this guide, along with last weeks node tree, than I have ever got before.

Nice added bonus episode to your node tree - thanks for that. As far as all the questions of where and why for NR or grain etc. My logic that I use is always put anything that actually smooths out things i.e. noise reduction, smooth power windows, blurs, glow etc. before any texture or grain type OFX. You can see why easily by putting in a grain node and turning on the "grain only " and then going a few nodes downstream and adding a soft power window and/or blur etc. it really shows how it affects the grain / texture - depending on how much you do - just smoothing out a person's skin will wreck the film grain emulation completely. So like you I also put the noise reduction up front. But for ripple reasons, I have it on all the trees in the same numbered place. Not so much to ripple the noise reduction , but it keeps all the numbering for every other node in order. I also think of primaries as nodes for me to get the footage to a place that I wish that it would have been from the camera. And obviously I would love if I was supplied with noise free footage. I like how you visually used the scopes as part of setting up for the noise reduction. That's a great tip that I'll have to remember for next time I use NR. I think I saw that you will be doing a live thing before christmas. If you don't see me in the chat - Hope you and your family have a great holiday. cheers to you and have a prosperous and exciting new year.

Wow, I'm actually using a tool correctly for Noise Reduction and that's A/B. I saw it on a random KZbin episode from years and years ago, and I've never seen anybody else use it other than you. However what I've learned from this episode, is not to use NR on every single clip, which is something that I've been doing since Day One of owning the Studio license. Its very hard to find any tutorials let alone good tutorials, such as yours, on Noise Reduction. I am now going to immediately stop using 5 for the "Frames Range" which can only help my render speeds at about 7 frames at the moment. Every day is a school day, and I never realised that you could pin-point where you added Noise Reduction. I shall be watching this episode quite a few times and definitely improve my technique for my next masterpiece. Have a relaxing Christmas. This year should be my last working Christmas for the next few years. The magic of the big day tends to fall a bit flat after eating a bone dry, stone cold, Turkey Dinner from a cardboard box sat in the cab. But it beats working for a living.🤣🤣
@DarrenMostyn
@DarrenMostyn 6 ай бұрын
Hi Frank. Well i hope this at least helps your render speeds and probably the quality too - 5 frames doesn't always mean better quality ! It can skew your results!! All the best and wish you a good christmas dinner - keep an eye out for my xmas livestream coming!!

@@DarrenMostyn That's good to know that 5 frames doesn't always mean better. Practically everybody on KZbin land says 5 is better as well as saying Motion Radius as Large. Its like the blind leading the blind. Enjoy your evening ploughing through the comments. With my latest masterpiece, it took me all of five minutes to read and reply to my comments. Remember those days when you first started? 🤣🤣

Thank you very much for this tutorial. We use NEAT video plugin for noise reduction in my job. We found out Davinci inbuild noise reduction is making artefacts in the picture. We are shooting clasical music concerts and lots of moving violin players, etc. That movement during the play is warping background behind that player if we apply davinci noise reduction. Neat video didn't cause this problem. But it is realy taxing for the system. Maxed out Mac Studio only manages 10fps render of the shot with noise reduction effect. Still better then Z8 with double Nvidia 5000 in it. That machine manages 6fps at the best. Usualy it is 2fps per shot render.
@DarrenMostyn
@DarrenMostyn 6 ай бұрын
I agree NEAT is better - but i usually need the Resolve one for speed in doc work - we dont have the time to use 3rd party plug-ins and the results aren't worth it (vs time I mean!) if you use Resolve NR well.

Great episode, Darren! Thanks so much for your passion + expertise. --> Quick question: what's your logic for applying grain in 709 vs DWG? Also, I was so sad I couldn't do that course with you and Daria recently, will you be doing that again?

Hi. My choice for REC 709 with that grain is because it is the Resolve grain specifically I feel behaves best in REC709. If you apply grain using dehancer for example it can be in DWG. The 4 day LIVE Masterclass WILL run again next year, yes - make sure to sign up to the email list in the description for notice of when. All the best, Darren

I always thought the NR node belongeg before the 1st CST node, so It would be the first node and it would reduce the noise of the footage before it was even graded. I've been doing this for 2 years. I'll change my workflow then, thank u 😄

Don’t change where you put it, you are doing it the best way already. When the footage is graded any noise is exaggerated which means that you have to increase the settings which means more processing power is required
