Now we can paint in sculpt mode - Here's how!

Blender 3.2 Painting in Sculpt Mode Tutorial
Sculpting in Blender is great. Texture painting in Blender is not so great. Now in Blender 3.2 you can paint while in sculpt mode using the new Blender paint brush and smear brush. This is a short tutorial on how to do it. Stay until the end and I'll show you a bonus tip for sculpting multiple objects at the same time (sort of).
Painting in sculpt mode uses color attributes instead of textures so when you want to render, you have to add a color attribute node. It's easy and I'll show you how. Also, if you want to export a painted model with textures you'll have to bake them.

I first came across your video with 50 tips because I'm a sucker for quick tips in Blender. I really appreciate your clear and concise explanations. In most of your videos you get right to the point with a simple demonstration and and quick explanation. Thank you for that. You do great work and it is appreciated. What then pushes your work over the top for me personally is that you take the time to then make separate videos where you tackle a topic in depth and go through the process step by step. Hi Brandon! This video was super helpful, but I was wondering if there was a way to erase the paint? I used the paintbrush to lay out some things and now that I've sculpted more, I want those guide lines gone 😅

For some reason my paint tool isn't there on the side bar in sculpt mode, I scrolled through the whole list and it only shows Draw Face Sets and the Multires Displacement Smear, but my Blender doesn't give me the option for paint. I even went to preferences, add ons, searched for paint, enabled it, saved and reopened, still no option. Anyone have any ideas?

WOW! This is awesome! Those are some cool new features, AND just as awesome is the creative use of your Stream Deck! I have one, but I never thought about using it for Blender stuff. How did you get the keys to show the Blender Sculpt icons? Did you draw those yourself, or did you use a screen capture tool and add the image to the keys that way? Hey man, I do love tacos. LOL. Yes, that's actually the main reason I bought the Stream Deck although I use it for a lot of other things. I set the resolution in Blender really high and then used the snipping tool to cut out the icons. Now that I think of it, I should just post them to my site so everyone can have them. When I connect the color attribute node to the base color and look at it in render view it only shows as solid black. What is going on?

Hey, thank you! It’s a whole process that’d be hard to outline here. If you search for texture baking you can find videos on it. Specifically I’d look for “bake textures from color attributes”. I may do a video on it soon but there are definitely plenty out there.

Any idea if you can do Retopology and export to Unity as a game character after you paint in sculpt mode, I know to paint in sculpt mode the higher the vertices the better but for a game character you need to do some retopology for it to function good as I’m sure you already know?

HI Brandon. Another very clear vid. Thanks for sharing. Just wondering if you've done a vid on the Elgato for Blender users? I've been interested in one for a while but wonder how Blender users set them up. In passing, I've had a few Wacom tablets over the years but the last two Intuos were really poor-quality builds. The pens broke just outside warranty, the wireless connection just failed and battery life was awful. I use a Huion now and it does the job.

Hey Philip, thanks again! That's strange you've had such a bad experience with the Intuos. Mine has been a workhorse. I haven't tried the Huion because I haven't needed to replace my Wacom in years. But I've seen the tempting price of them and have wondered if they're good. Thanks for sharing!

I'm new to blender so idk how to work most of this stuff yet, but for some reason when I try to use any color other than white or black it just paints black. Or it paints black with an outline of the color I chose. So like if I chose the color blue then it will either only paint black, or black with a blue outline

You can definitely sculpt a shape key. If you mean having a shape key affect the color, I doubt it…but I haven’t tried.

late reply but in case it helps someone else - i don't know a shortcut but one way to do it is change the stroke method to Anchored and drag out over the whole object hope that helps

Ye I don't know why he is stressing a tablet so much, you can change the DPI (sensitivity) on a mouse and it's really not that bad, considering it's literally just like colouringa colour book, it's not like you're drawing the model lmao.

At first I was wondering the same thing. I hadn’t used vertex paint a lot before. According to the developers, this method has the advantages of “being able to use a mask, face sets, filters, new brush settings and of course smooth performance”. And then of course, you can sculpt and paint at the same time. But yes, I see a lot of the functionality was already there in vertex paint.
