V blocks, dial caliper with mag base, hammer, brass drift. With these you can straighten a bent crank if its not bent too badly. I straightened a bent crank on a Supertiger 90. It came out absolutely perfect.

I saw that engine run for about 1 minute. It was in a P51 Mustang. Unfortunately my friend used a single conversion 72 MHZ reciever and he lost control seconds after take-off. I disassembled the engine to see if I thought I could straighten the crankshaft. The weight difference is probably because of the smaller thread diameter. I was using the muffler on one side of my FA 100T.

Hi David........Ron Lund up in Anchorage. I see where this video was put together very recently. So......I'm going to be real curious to find out eventually whether or not you will be able to get that crankshaft straightened out. I'll make sure I keep checking back over the winter.

A small lathe and a dial indicator. Looks like the bend is at the base of the threads. This crank shaft could be straightened IMHO.

This most definitely can be straightened. It is just a matter of finding someone to do it.

You could try and do it yourself. You can buy a cheap dial indicator and rig up a fixture in a vise.

After looking at the takedown, it is hard to believe that this engine had any run time. The top of the piston looks mirror bright. Even a little run time, the piston would have some discoloration.

I had same problem on my fa 50 the noise is a combo of cam and piston i have 2 and both sound the same i do have access to our machine shop at work if you want i will straighten the crankshaft for you as the weight goes i the 45-50-56 all use the same crankshaft SAI5623A as a replacement i would say it would be ok as for early and late from what i can see they list the same rod and piston

Kirk, there is no listing anywhere of part numbers for the 45 Mkii engines. If this crankshaft is a very early 50 it used the same crank and the 45 Mkii. This i am certain of. I would certainly like the original one straightened however possible.

Won't glow engines run fine in cold snowy weather with a bit of tuning? I seem to recall reading about guys fitting skis to their trainers and Ugly Stick type planes and doing just that.

Your remarks that we wouldn't know how well your Saito for months because it was winter suggested to me there might be some functional reason why it wouldn't run in cold weather.

@Have you ever run engines outside in temperatures below freezing? With cameras and other equipment? How many run videos have you ever made? Obviously not or you wouldn’t have asked. Go try it sometime and see how pleasant it is.

I know for a fact that my wimpy 1 ton press could not do this job even if I had a run out gauge and the skills to do it.
