well, I was only 2 in 71, so yeah. But at around 9 I did manage to get a O.S. Max 40 for a silly swap with some kid , and I had a lot of fun with that thing. getting hold of ether was so much easier back then...but now it's methanol and nitromethane of course.

Very enlightening being able to glance through stuff that was produced way before I was even born (1988). Thank you David! Wow. Makes you really wonder on the direction our illustrious, glorious hobby has taken today with these "fly out of the box" half baked pieces of recycled materials (electric foamies to you and me). Unbelievable. I believe the best era of R/C modelling was up until 2010 or so - then it literally took a plunge. So grateful having entered this magnificent hobby in the very late '90s - very early '00s. An era when our hobby actually made you think, use your brain... Regards Harry

Companies like Sig and Tower Hobbies absolutely put companies like Motion Rc , Whoreizon , and Hobby Queen to complete shame . Hobby Queen has only two pages of planes offered for sale at this time . Two words can describe the modern day hobby suppliers in this day and age . Overpriced and really poor selection . Airplanes priced so young modelers can afford them are nothing but cheap crap that would discourage any young modeler. Just like everything else in this country . things were better fifty years than they are now . Yes I do own my share of foamies , but it`s the planes that I build that are the closest to my heart and the hobby I love . Real men fly planes with real engines .

I remember those great catalogs, I may still have a couple and one may be the one you are showing. I have built a couple Jetco glider kits in my teens, I still have a couple Jetco kits, a Mooney Mite I started many years ago, the fuse has a tin fuel tank buried in the nose. The wing and tail feathers are still in the box unassembled. The other kit is a Rearwin Speedster combo, control line, freeflight or early RC. I bought it on Evilbay about 10 years ago. They are nice kits crude diecut balsa and ply parts being careful cutting them out from the sheets the fit is very good with some light sanding. Plans are excellent and very clear and well done. It is well worth it to find a aircraft you like and purchase one just for the fun of it. Another one I bought as a kid was the award winning Scott Mc Closkey control line P-51D that I was going to convert to RC but I was talked into giving it away to my neighbor across the street when I lived in Westchester, California next to LAX. However I kept the box and plans which i still have. I could on and on. My first RC trainer was a Goldberg Falcon 56 Mk II powered by a K& B 40 and a Kraft 4 channel, I still have all of it in storage. Great fun, I love all the old memories, I hope to retrieve all of it soon. John from Hayden, Idaho BTW, back in the 70's when I started RC my go to place was Tower Hobbies which is still in business. I recently in the last 5 years I purchased a tower hobbies own brand Ryan STA 50" + I believe and some monokote. From Sig I purchased the german 117, beautiful lazer cut kit. Comet, stearling, Cox 049. 051 and others, plans up the ying/yang. Do you know about: The Plan Page, check it out, Stick and Tissue Plans you can blow up and construct some nice RC park flyer's. I have printed all of them 100 to 200%. Building two Ryan/North American Navion's. Have fun and I hope all of you get something out of my 70 years of modeling knowledge. Plastic too. Rare plane detective.

I know I am commenting on an older video but I have a qustion regarding the ST 90. From what i have read it is barely heavier than the 60. This may just be the Italian model. If it is a very small weight increase why would i want a 60 if i could have the 90 with no real penalty. For a sport plane not a scale one.
@dmrcflyr210 сағат бұрын
That was the trend across many companies. Pack more displacement in the smallest case possible because all people demanded was ‘more power’. Of course I’m off the camp of never grossly overpowering an airplane. Once i get my G90 back together i can weigh it versus the G60 and we can see exactly how much difference there is.

@dmrcflyr212 сағат бұрын
The best I can tell you is the cases are different. The S has a removable front housing and the G are single piece crankcases. The S might have an older style carb. Since there are no reviews on the G90 that is about all I can say.

Hi David, I was surprised to see that crash engine again. I look forward to seeing parts of it run again. It is really a shame about the carb; I think I have seen carburetors like that on eBay in the past, but they were asking too much money for one; like $60. You say you have no muffler, but don't forget that I included the Pitts-style muffler with that engine, and while it's not OEM, it might be cool to see if you can get that on your test stand and give it a go. Good Luck, stay warm. florida_floyd

With that elitism its no wonder its a dying entity, you've missed so much with your "opinion" it almost is a deterant. As with I'm sure thousands, I was introduced to the hobby via Helicopters then progressing through foam then a few scratch builds. If scratch building rc models were the ONLY entry the hobby would have died off long ago apart from those few look at me's, regardless of how you enjoy the hobby I dont think it should matter how shiny your shoes are compaired to person next to you.....if you enjoy building well thats great, I can assure you that the "builders generation" ain't that good at flying them that they should boast about it 😉

60 bucks. I got one used from a buddy.. A .45 mark 2 for 200 bucks in 89. I don't remember those ever being cheap. At least not "that" cheap. But yea the good old Tower Hobbies Catalog would come to your mailbox If you paid for the big one that is. Once a year. They did have the phone number to call but yea you could order form it too. The old guy that taught me to fly had the old Saito .60 with the open rockers. I needed Saito parts some years later and sent away for them by mail including the parts list etc.. I had gave up on it when I got a package in the mail from Saito probably a year later. What had happened is that I had sent the order to an old address for the company and they had moved to another State. Some nice person over there somehow got my order.. I don't know how.. and sent me the order with an updated address/phone number and an updated parts list for all the engines. They just took the check I sent even though the parts had changed price and the check I sent wasn't enough to cover the order. Sent the whole order to me without question. I thought that was super cool.

Hi Dave, If you can, you should try for a few flights. The Kadet LT40 is a nice flying plane. I flew one several times but it was not mine. It shouldn't be too difficult to add the wing nose block and check that the rest of the plane is airworthy. I flew my first RC plane in 1970 and it was a 3 channel Top-Flite Headmaster. I installed an OS .25 with a 6 oz tank. I could fly for 20 minutes and still have about an ounce left. My instructor pushed me to fly in windy weather and on one occasion there was a nice steady 20 mph wind. He talked me through to a landing and I surprised myself when the plane slowed to a hover at about 10 feet and was instructed to close the throttle just a hair and the plane settled to a landing with now ground speed. My hands were shaking and that was enough flying. My friend was also be trained and we had a ball that day. It's nice taking a stroll down memory lane every once in a while.
@dmrcflyr22 күн бұрын
I have flown before. Many airplanes. I know how a SIG Kadet flies. I know how most all trainers fly. I know how warbirds fly. I know how low wing sport airplanes fly. I know how biplanes fly. I’ve flown them all. There is nothing new or special about a Kadet. I have a playlist on this channel dedicated to my flight videos. I know how to fly but I’m not doing it now for many reasons. I should not have to do this, but perhaps it is time for yet another video to explain my reasons once again. Then maybe others will stop trying to encourage me to do something I’m in no position to do at this time.

Hey Dave, I have quite a few larger 4 cycle OS & Saito engines and I love them all. I have a delima with some NIB engines to sell but I want to keep one of the smaller ones. What would your recomend a Saito FA-45mk 2 like presented here or the OS FS-52s in blue box? One day I know id wish i kept both, but i have to fund my airplane addiction somehow! Keep up the great work , love all that you do!
@dmrcflyr22 күн бұрын
Easy question and answer. KEEP the SAITO. Ditch the FS-52. There is way more class and nostalgia in the MkII then that OS 52 by a long shot. Most people would keep an engine simply because they want ‘more power’. But not me. I believe in flying on the wing, properly powering an airplane per the design, and keeping classic engines. Besides, no cam shaft bearings to replace in a Saito.
