Dave, I must say, I'm quite impressed with how the TT FS91 seem to perform in this video. I just picked one up, NIB off of eBay. $169- and these days (2024) that's a pretty good price. I want to put it in my brand new Great Planes Revolver. After reading the comments here, I think it wise to replace the original plug with the OS type F- the one you mention in this video- to ensure I get the RPMs, both high speed and idle, that you achieve in this video. I'm just wondering how long of a break-in will I need to be able to trust it, sideways mounted, in the Revolver. Also, I was wondering your thoughts on mounting it inverted. I do have a FS90 Enya mounted upside down in a Goldberg Chipmunk and it runs quite dependably. The Revolver seems to have adequate ventilation in the lower portion of the cowl, eliminating the need to cut a hole in the side, making it more aerodynamic and aesthetically pleasing. Thank you for all your efforts in providing us with these fascinating engine reviews. This one was quite useful to me.
@dmrcflyr213 күн бұрын
I cannot say how long it will take you to ‘trust’ this engine mounted sideways. Personally I never liked an inverted engine. I had several and only so-so results. I do not recall ever having many issues side mounted and never any issue upright. For me it all boiled down to how much time was spent flying as opposed to dicking around with an engine at the flying field. I chose to say the hell with how it looks I would prefer to fly reliably and enjoy instead of toiling over fuel draw issues or whatever. So my opinion doesn’t mean dick. You choose to fly and mount the engine as you desire. If your experience with inverted engines has been good then why question it? I do not have enough experience with that particular to say one way or the other. All my videos show is the truth and facts for a particular engine at that moment in time. There are far too many variables to to give you concrete answers. There are some things you simply must choose and experience for yourself.
@freed634312 күн бұрын
@@dmrcflyr2 Thank you so much for your thoughts, Dave; I will do as you suggest and work toward experiencing it myself. Before installing this engine in my new ARF kit, I will of course run it on the test stand for run-in. I will mount it in the different configurations and carefully tune and test for static performance in the different positions. I'm also thinking this might be a new angle for you to tackle in your excellent videos (no pun intended) since so many of us are installing engines sideways or inverted. Thank you again for your prompt and professional opinion. Respectfully, Floyd-

I was kinda worried that without the cover the belt would slip off the cam pulley. Or is it valve pulley for this engine? :D
@dmrcflyr215 күн бұрын
There is no force in a direction to make the belt come off the gear. The cover is simply to prevent debris from fouling the belt and gear. There are no valves or cams in this engine. Read the linked review article for a full description of this design.

Is denatured alcohol as hydrophyllic as methanol?
@dmrcflyr215 күн бұрын
What is the measure of how hydrophilic methanol is? Where did you find that number? Can’t you use the same process for getting your answer here? All alcohols are hydrophyllic to some degree.
@evanleebodies15 күн бұрын
@@dmrcflyr2 Wow David! Quick response or what? Good to see you back on the Tube....really missed your expertise and knowledge. I was hoping that using denatured alcohol would pose less of a risk re: corrosion vs methanol.
@dmrcflyr215 күн бұрын
Well the intent of this video was to simply show a POSSIBLE alternative to making a fuel; basically an excuse to make a video. These engines still require a form of alcohol to operate and with that they will still require the proper maintenance. That includes completely clearing the engine of fuel residue and using a good after run oil to keep internals lubricated. As I asked above, what is your measure or numbers for the hydrophilic capacity of methanol? If you do not know then how can you possibly compare it to denatured alcohol? Thus, what difference does it make? Proper maintenance of your engines still applies so I do not see the relevance of the question. As long as glow fuel is available, using denatured alcohol is not required. Don’t you think if denatured alcohol was less hydrophilic or ‘better’ than methanol, that glow engine manufacturers would recommend its use instead of methanol?

My SF61 all of a sudden wouldn’t start. Usually it’s super easy to start and very stable. Found out that the plug screw was gone. Must have vibrated loose or something. It’s nr 8 on the explosion view. I don’t understand what it’s for. Anyone who knows?🤗
@dmrcflyr221 күн бұрын
I cannot find a #8 listed in the exploded view I have of that engine. if it is the screw in the center of the rear cover, you are correct, the engine will never start or run with that missing. it does not allow a vacuum to be created in the crankcase if missing. It is there for when using a pump.
@thomashancheolsen20 күн бұрын
@@dmrcflyr2 It’s the short screw just beside the fuel intake nipple on the carb. There’s also a gasket on this screw. It will not suck fuel without it in place, so maybe just an extra place for a fuel nipple?
@dmrcflyr220 күн бұрын
Obviously it will not suck fuel without it, it is creating an air leak. I don’t know why that screw is there I no longer have that carb. Burt suffice it to say it does not matter the purpose only that without it your carb is useless. Doing an internet search for OS 7L carb turns up lots of hits.

Hey David, apart from the fantastically running laser 80 in this vid and the equally lovely Noah cat, I've a question: for long-term storage, after ending a session, do I save the bearings inside an engine by "drowning" it in FAI fuel? I mean, will it protect against the effects of any tiny residue left from the 12% Nitro fuel I'm using (I always "dry out" my engines after each session)? Or am I just wasting my time, thank you in advance, Regards Harry
@dmrcflyr218 күн бұрын
Long term storage should always be done with an oil of some sort and never fuel even if it is FAI. Methanol still attracts moisture, moisture equals rust.

Hi David. I came across your channel quite by accident and wish i had found it years ago. Some of your engine videos take me back to the 50s 60s in England when i was a lad just getting into model making. my first model was a Cox plastic control line plane with a cox Pee Wee motor. then i graduated to making my own Balsa and tissue paper models powered by small diesel engines, we would make our own fuel ( castor oil, ether and paraffin <kerosene>) but i digress. I have been looking for about 5 years for a long ago discontinued OS four stroke engine which was for model cars. OS FS 40S-CX and after finding your channel i thought this guy may have one, know someone who has one or can point me in the right direction to find one. I would have liked to have emailed you direct but the 'About" section in your profile no longer exists so there was no way to find your email address. Accept my apologies if i have been waffling on but my hopes have been raised just by finding your channel.
@dmrcflyr222 күн бұрын
Hi Andrew. KZbin has simply changed how you access the information in the About screen. On the channel page instead of an About tab you go up to the description beneath the channel name and click on the arrow > pointing to the right to see that information. My email address is easily seen there. First let me say that many things have changed in my life since I started this channel. I am not an engine collector as I feel there is no point in that. Most all of the engines featured on this channel are LONG gone with maybe the exception of those made in the last year. I have never owned nor do I know where you can find the FS 40S-CX engine. I hope you enjoy watching my videos. Cheers.

Great video David. Good comparison of prop performance. I think the transition issue is the plug. It’s a two stroke plug and webra make hotter plugs than the 4. I’d run it with the IS F it’s way more suited especially with low nitro fuels. Other thing you could do is run high nitro fuel like 20% on this plug.

Hey, Dave! Can you tell me in which order does the crankshaft spacer/washer go in the assembly? I was given one of these (R/C version) from another club member. However, it was in pieces and missing some pieces. One of the missing pieces crankshaft washer. Obviously, the crankshaft has quite of bit of end play with out this washer installed. I saw a cranshaft washer shown in one of the pictures on the Sceptre Flight review for this motor and I'm trying to make a substitution using a prop washer I had laying around. However, I can't seem to find an exploded view of this engine anywhere on the web to show where it should be installed. The tapered cone design and lack of bearings of this engine is also new to me. Most of my engines seem to use woodruff keys instead of the tapered cone design. Just can't seem to figure out how it goes together: hoping you might be able to shed some light on this for me. Thanks!
@dmrcflyr225 күн бұрын
Honestly I cannot answer the question for that engine as I no longer have one. But there will be some end play in the crank if it is a bushed bearing engine. I also cannot advise where to get a suitable replacement spacer. These are some of the issues with obtaining older engines. It doesn’t help that yours was disassembled to begin with. Good luck.

Hi David. I still think there is a little timing error in the valve timing. If you disassemble the belt cover try to find a little point on the upper belt gear. I thought seeing a little point slightly on the left side top (about 11 o’clock) directly under the teeth of the gear on your disassembly video. Can you confirm that? Because this point should be absolutely on top as I remember my engine I had. I always ran my engine on OS „f“ plug and it ran very fine. Much better than the original plugs of webra.

@dww654625 күн бұрын
Hi David. Thanks for the reply. Well, these engines are often spicy with their timing. The smaller is even more a diva than the large one. In worst case the rotary valve doesn’t seal enough anymore and when exhaust timing is too late it blows back to the inlet. Otherwise with too early timing it may struggle very hard. All in all I wish you good luck and a lot of patience with this little beast 😉.

Being that the carb and exhaust is opposite between these engines, I'm thinking that one runs clockwise and the other counterclockwise. Just my guess.

Yes that would seem to be a reasonable deduction. The only review articles I could find cover the 1044 version with the carb directly mounted to the left side of the head. No mention was made in that review about this operating in the opposite direction. Since this video I have run the 1043 version with the intake manifold and carb attached to the rear of the head. It too operates in the normal dirrection.

@@dmrcflyr2 I have a couple of Abitar 120 engines that can run in either direction just by switching the carb and muffler around. It's especially desirable if using two of these engines on a plane for better balancing and there's no cam timing adjustment needed. There is a timing option available for changing the power band I think because the cam pulleys have "A" and "B" stamped on them. That's why I thought your Webra engines rotated opposite of each other due to the location of the carb and muffler. I have a Webra T4-80 but because of the way the carb and muffler is mounted, I don't have a way to test that theory. As always, thanks for the great content you post.
