Ditto. Born the same year, owned an RCA Studio II (That self-destructed the same day), Astrocade (bought broken), 2600, Intellivision, Colecovision, 7800, NES, Turbografx, Genesis, SNES, Sega CD, Gameboy, and Game Gear. Usually years after they were popular, but it's great to remind myself how much better the libraries are when you're patient. (Or just too broke to afford anything brand new.)

It's Japan *Victor* Company. They are the former Japanese branch of the Victor Talking Machine Company that was split off due to WW2 breaking out. They retained the rights to the brand "Victor" in Japan, which they used for quite a while (into the 90s and 2000s) whereas RCA (who bought out Victor) didn't really use the "Victor" name much past the 60s I think? (Edit: yeah, "RCA Victor" was renamed to "RCA Records" in 1968)

Another key reason to love this series: the factoid about the SMB power hour. Not only did the idea live on in SMBSS but it ultimately lived on in a variety of ways through one of my favorite cartoons of the time: Captain N: the game master. I love how so many licensed games got recycled and re-skinned across different regions. That game based off of a food mascot in Japan? It could be remade into a game show tie-in in America and a Disney game in Europe, and nobody would even realize they're the same until years later. Why design a whole new game when you can just ROM hack a skin swap?

Correction: the SNES version of Cool Spot didn't come out until fall 1993 but the Sega Genesis version came out in April 1993 in North America. I think Virgin wanted to give Cool Spot some time to breathe on the Genesis so they put it out roughly half a year before their big autumn 1993 Sega Genesis title, Disney's Aladdin. I think the snowboarding in California Games II is supposed to take place in Yosemite National Park, or maybe Palisades Tahoe, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. I liked the first California Games but I played the slightly better-looking Sega Master System version, which is mostly the same as the NES version but more colourful and there's a lot more background detail in the roller-skating event. The MS-DOS version of World Class Leaderboard didn't have any music either. One of the big selling points of the MS-DOS version was the audio commentary that you could hear even if your PC didn't have a sound card with Access Software's "Real Audio" technology. I think it was the first PC game I ever played with digitized speech and it was easily the first game I played with audio play-by-play, roughly two years before "Sports Talk" started showing up on the Genesis.
