The Vinyl set features all 5 albums remastered on 180g black vinyl, the rare "Nobody Rides For Free" 7" single.
12 page replica tour book (featuring rare and never before seen photos from Ratt's personal archives), 11"x17" WANTED POSTER, bumper sticker, replica backstage pass, and guitar pick in a custom lift top box.
The vinyl set is mastered by Andy Pearce and the whole band were involved in the production of the LP box set as well.
The CD set features all 5 of the studio albums in a side loading box. All albums feature the classic line up of Stephen Pearcy (vocals), Warren DeMartini (guitars), Robbin Crosby (guitars), Juan Croucier (bass/vocals), and Bobby Blotzer (drums).
1984’s Out Of The Cellar kicks off proceedings, and the line-up here features vocalist Stephen Pearcy, guitarists Robbin Crosby and Warren DeMartini, bassist Juan Croucier and drummer Bobby Blotzer. From the outset, from the opening chords of Wanted Man, it’s a glammy full frequency sonic assault that mixes full on crunchy guitars with melodic AOR breaks. Some of the songs Crosby had written in his previous band. The producer Beau Hill was apparently a novice but does a fine job, given the style and target audience, and the album went triple platinum in the US, spawning an MTV hit or two; one of the videos featured Tawny Kitaen, who also appears on the album’s cover. Occasional shred and guitar harmonies make for a good album, but there isn’t much in the way of change of pace of feel.
The following year’s Invasion Of Your Privacy followed suit, and went double platinum in the US. More tours, radio play and hits followed. The sultry shot of a scantily clad model on the cover lays the cards on the table in terms of the continued musical style. Pearcy’s vocals match the zeitgeist perfectly, and hits like Lay It Down are an enjoyable listen.
1986 saw third album Dancing Undercover, more hit singles including the opening track Dance, and tours with the likes of Cheap Trick, Queensryche, Poison and Cinderella. Some of the tracks verge on straight heavy metal, but even on those Pearcy’s vocals give that sleaze edge. An enjoyable track is Body Talk, which was used in the Eddie Murphy film The Golden Child.
Fourth album Reach For The Sky, released in 1988, another solid album, still managed to go platinum in the US, but the sales were notably down from earlier albums. While it still had a glam edge, it was not as sleazy as earlier efforts. Way Cool Jr was one of the catchy sleazier tracks, but that part of Ratt’s sound was largely lost to the likes of Poison, Crue and G’n’R. Absolutely nothing wrong with the album. It’s solid, but a little more ordinary at the same time.
In order to try to recreate past glories, produced Desmond Child was brought in for 1990’s Detonator. And without being overtly sleezy, there is a distinct move to a more commercial glam metal/pop (not too dissimilar to the then recent transition made by Kiss). Still solid, a power ballad and all, full credit for keeping going in the face of grunge, a trend that successfully killed off much better bands. But the album only managed gold sales, which would signal the end of an era. Joe Geesin

Ratt! One of the bands I use to listen over and over again. Reach for the sky I think it's the less I do. I always miss the ep when boxes sets comes out. Lovely memories comes and goes even better when in vinyl. Hope this can sell pretty well. Thank you for videos like this. Take care.

I disagree. 1990 was still a great year for glam metal bands and new bands like Slaughter and Firehouse were blowing up plus the massive tours bands were doing for their albums from the previous year, on top of 1990 being seen as more 80s than the 80s. I think what really killed Detonator was Reach for the Sky. That album was almost all filler and lost a lot quality compared to the first 3 albums which lowered people’s expectations. Detonator is actually my favorite Ratt album and it should’ve been a massive comeback after Reach for the Sky but the damage was already done.

Hi Phil. The bendy ones (as you call them) are way better than the substantial 180 grams. As mentioned before, they connect better to the platter due to their flexibility, and the thinner material has a lower own frequency than the stiff 180 grams. The 180 gram records actually introduces noise and rumble to the audible spectrum due to their higher own frequency. 180 grams is a sales gimmick and a scam, and should be the target of the next campaign, when the inner sleeve campaign hopefully turns out to be a success. Nice box set, but there's sure some paper dust on the records. Stay awesome mate. All the best from Denmark.

I know you mentioned that the original pressings from back then is kinda worn, but since you have both you still should try to compare the old ones to the new 180 grams. Look from the side how they connect to the platter, and listen for low frequency rumble. Despite the old ones are worn, and probably a bit noisy, I bet you'll still notice what I mean. Here's an idea for a video. I know this channel is about the music and the medias, but it still would be interesting if you showed what gear you enjoy the magic on. Ps. I don’t own either this new Ratt set or the Cherry Red clamshell CD boxset from 2020. However I do own a cheap Ratt “Original Album Series’ CD set with these five albums on CD in simple cardboard sleeves, that I bought from Amazon. To me these sound fine and I won’t be purchasing these fancier sets. There is not much more on offer on the CD format so I won’t splurge. The vinyl set looks outstanding though. If I bought vinyl, I would pick that up.

I just recently picked up the Ratt Vinyl box for $110 shipped and I must say it is vastly better than the Skid Row and Dokken box set respectively leaving out Beast from the East off the Dokken set was a big miscue and the price tag already was overly inflated but I got a deal on it so I cannot complain but just stating what many fans have already said. Skid Row is coming down as well as certain online retailers still have them and are wanting to liquidate their inventory and you can grab it dirt cheap . Ratt box is solid however with extras you get and as it is mentioned here these are memory boxes it is worth grabbing but not for the $199 price tag it originally had at least to me but now for less why not !! Not the biggest fan of Skid Row, Ratt or Dokken more of a causal fan but you are better off getting these box sets then trying to find each album on it's own and piecing it together unless that is your thing and you enjoy the hunt for the type of original vinyl. Ratt vinyl box is going for a better price in the States now so pick it up if you can.

Ratt for me signified a change in my musical tastes after having picked up on so many great US/Canadian bands like Legs Diamond, Moxy, Montrose, Max Webster, Roadmaster and a few others during the late 1970's - I really got turned off by "pretty boy metal" like Ratt, Poison and Motley Crue and just focused more on European bands like Accept, Helloween, Faithful Breath, Victory, Trust and a few others. I did buy the Poison debut album and Ratt's "Out Of The Cellar" but they really weren't for me. Having said that, my lovely missus of 30 years was/is a huge Motley Crue, Poison, Hanoi Rocks and Ratt fan - so they can have some kudos for us meeting that fateful day over a rock jukebox in a pub!

I found the LP box set at my local record shop, it was open so it was sold as a Second-Hand item. I only paid 80 euros for it, the guy who owned the store told me he had ordered it for someone who bought it, took it home but brought it back the next day saying that he didn't like the way the records sounded!! So, the store owner took a loss as he can't charge full price when its open. But i gave it a good home and I think they sound great!!

Excellent review video. My only beef with this release is why omit the 'RATT EP'? Unless there's an issue with the publishing rights, there's no excuse for not including the EP in this set. The EP has been out of print for many years; and if one wants to purchase the CD on bay, one has to take a second mortgage. Again this is a beef with the record company suits not having any consideration for fans.

Hi Thomas, the Cherry Red set is out of print but there are copies to be found. It had some radio / mono edits and the point break song added and a fold out posters with the album credits and some photos. The new BMG CD Set has the albums in digipacks which are more impressive than the Cherry Red sleeves but there is not booklet or any extras. The sound is the same or it seems it to my ears! They sounded fabulous anyway. All the creative energy has gone towards the Vinyl set here and I do think it is very impressive. Phil

Of all the bands from the LA scene during the 80s, Ratt are my favorite, and this is a set I think I'd certainly invest in. What I would like is a Privacy or a Dancing boxset, given they are two of my favorite records, but I guess the studio material just isn't available anymore perhaps? They could be expanded with shows form each era. Or maybe this is something that might be down the line

When i found out about this set, i sold my previous box set(The Cherry Red Records set). I also had the Rock Candy remasters. I only listened to Out Of The Cellar in the Cherry Red box. The remaster sounded kind of loud. So, i never listened to the other cds. I like that the cds in the cd box of these box sets are digipacks. I think that the cds in the Cherry Red type box sets could get scratched easier since they're in slip covers. The fact that the cd box set doesn't have the book or the Nobody Rides For Free single isn't a deal breaker. I also have Spotify. So, i have NRFF on a playlist. I like that the Ratt, Skid Row, and Dokken sets had the original labels(Atlantic and Elektra). I'm guessing that the Motley Crue set only had the BMG logo, because Motley sold their catalog to BMG. Regarding the Cherry Red vs BMG sets, and why more than one label put out a set, i gather it's so the material is more available. I only know of some record stores(like Amoeba in Hollywood) that sell Rock Candy and Cherry Red box product. Since BMG is a bigger label, those set will be available at more places. For example, a store in Utah called Gray Whale has both the Dokken and Motley sets. So, they should have the Ratt set.

I'm definitely more of an Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest kinda guy but having said that I have always enjoyed Ratt's music anytime i have heard it. Hi Chris, thank you for watching and your question. There really is no where on the CDs or outer box that suggests any remastering. Andy Pearce did the vinyl set and that suggests he was involved with the CD set as well. I don't have the Rock Candy Remasters, I have the Cherry Red set from 2020 and to be honest these albums sounded fantastic anyway. Personally if you have the Rock Candy Remasters you do not need this new CD set. There are no booklets or extras. Phil

I loved Ratt since I first saw Round And Round on MTV. I had all of their releases on cassette and CD, I have Invasion Of Your Privacy and Out Of The Cellar on used vinyl. I saw them live a few times in the late 80’s and early 90’s; and they were so good. But music was changing around the end of the 80’s, most people were getting into Thrash Metal and Alternative/ Grunge music and Glam Metal was falling out of favor. Only the bands with better management and marketing were able to compete. Ratt was unfortunately one of those bands that didn’t , plus Robbin Crosby’s drug use and infighting within the band further halted their existence in the 90’s. They’ve only had two full length album since Detonator; the self titled album in 1999 and Infestation in 2010. I wish they still continued their success like Crue, Def Leppard and Poison have, but at least we have there’s great albums to remember them by. I’m definitely buying this set, looks amazing. For me I can understand how the hard-core fan of Ratt will want to acquire the vinyl set. For me the CD boxset has tighter storage and I'm assuming a good remastering. There are so many other sets that in my opinion deserve my attention. No disrespect to the fans. But it was swamped by their genre and hopefully a used set more reasonably priced will eventually float by... Good review by the way

On the video it looked like there was still some factory dust on the albums, so I assumed you hadn't played them yet. Have you played them? If so, how do they sound? Well pressed? Clean and quiet? Thank you for watching, I have played them and they sound great. There was a bit of dust but it came off easily. I have cleaned the albums and placed them in anti static inner sleeves. Phil

There is no information on the CD box set about the remastering. Andy Pearce did the vinyl so he could have done these? The Cherry Red Set from 2020 sounded excellent and this new sets sounds just as good. They were always fantastic sounding albums anyway and to be honest when reviewing these I just turned up the volume and listened using my ears. Granted my ears have been listening to rock music for decades but they still sound huge to me. Not everyone like the drum sound from the 80s but I do and these CDs sound huge. Phil

My copy of ''Dancing under cover'' is a DMM disc which should sound better than the ordinary vinyl???..i have the first Lou Gramm lp in DMM as well

They sound excellent to me and far better than the first generation CDs and the Original Series Box Set. Probably on a par with the Cherry Red Box Set.

nice box set, buuut the cash grab by BMG and Those grabbing, where are the lyric pages?! i know some of these didn't come with, but this box set and any other box set should have complete sh!t this cd set...suuux. sure the vinyl set is decent, but they could have included the lyrics in the picture book and some stories .... i will only buy this for 70-80$'s

I don’t know the economics of putting together a set like this, but adding a repro of the vinyl booklet to the CD box would’ve made this an instant buy for me. As is, I’m more than likely passing on it.

I have all their albums on vinyl ( several copies, some Japanese pressings too), CD and tape. Also all of their tour books. No way I'm gonna pay 200$ for this! No lyric sheets, no extra tracks ( they never had non album "b-sides", no live stuff.. no background...yawn.
