Hi again Phil and thank you for this very interesting summation of these iconic bands. I can tell that I am a few years older than you because of the impact that some of my choices made on me being 15 years old in 1970 and the albums that came soon after. Here are my choices and I can NOT do three for Sabbath... Sabbath: 1) Sabotage very close 2nd) Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 3) tie - Vol 4 and Master of Reality Purple: 1) In Rock (changed my life) 2) Burn 3) Made in Japan Zeppelin: 1) Number 1 2) Number 4 3) Number 2 Heep: 1) First album (I will never forget the 1st time hearing Gypsy and Bird of Prey 2) Look at Yourself 3) Demons and Wizards So I have skewed things into how they impacted me which goes against the theme of a new person coming on board, but I can't get away from those past feelings. My favourite and first Uriah Heep album I bought and I bought it for the cover didn’t know nothing about them was magicians birthday and still to this day it’s still my favourite album from Uriah Heep. I would recommend one of each main lineup: sabbath bloody sabbath, heaven & hell, and headless cross. So then people can go on with the sabbath they like the most of the 3. I agree with you that technical ecstasy is underrated, it deserves another chance! Burn is outstanding, completely agree there! ❤

I must admit that after I got over my Slade fever it was these four bands (and Jimi Hendrix) for me in the early mid 70s.Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Master of Reality Vo4 Sabotage In Rock Fireball Made in Japan LZ 1,2,3,4 Magicians Birthday Look at Yourself Live Demons and Wizards were all in my collection by age 15.Just listened to Magicians Birthday and Demons and Wizards last night.

Hi Phil, interesting choice all great albums I still play those albums to this day never get tired of listening to them they hold so many great memories for me of that time, for me Led Zeppelin 3,4 and physical graffiti, Purple made in Japan, in rock and machine head, Sabbath masters of reality, sabotage and sabbath bloody sabbath, Heep demons and wizards, look at yourself and magician’s birthday Mick Box guitar solo on the title track is superb I don’t think he got the recognition as one of rocks great guitarist that he deserved any way Phil that’s my choice in no particular order and ones I would recommend to anyone who wanted to get into classic rock today, cheers Phil great vid as always.

I am 38 years old and seen that MANY "older fans" of different bands and artists take for granted that EVERYONE knows what they know. They grew up with Led Zeppelin, Budgie, Captain Beyond, Genesis, Cream, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Deep Purple, Whitesnake, King Crimson, Warhorse, Gentle Giant, Journey, Van Halen, Thin Lizzy and everything else so they have a hard time understanding that not everyone had the same luxury. They can have a very hard time to understand that others came into it all from a different era or with a different perspective. I am not talking about you Phil or say Pete from Sea of Tranquility but others doesn't really have the the ability to see something from another perspective. It's rather odd I think. Good that you brought in Uriah Heep into the mix. Especially since they are unto their last big tour (and from what I've heard still playing great) and that I think Uriah Heep has lost much media time over the decades because they rarely are included with Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath or Deep Purple in many conversations.

That's because UH have no memorable songs and they changed their singer too often. DP = Gillan, BS = Ozzy LZ = Plant UH = Byron (long gone), Shaw (no hits with him), the other three (good but too short period of time). For me BLUE ÖYSTER CULT is way ahead of UH.

Heep are indeed about to embark on a 2-3 year farewell tour, how is that for a way to end your worldwide touring of coming up on 55 years…..what a band…..in my opinion the last 7 albums released by the band are as good as their releases in the 1970’s….compare that to the other 3 bands in this topic who have mostly lived off their 1970’s output, except for Purple to a certain extent…

Great video and selections. Here are mine. Black Sabbath: Sabotage / Sabbath Bloody Sabbath / Heaven and Hell. Deep Purple: Burn / Stormbringer / In Rock. Led Zeppelin: Physical Graffiti / Led Zeppelin III / Led Zeppelin. Not so familiar with Uriah Heep, though have seen them live a couple of times. Maybe I should take note of your choices!

Hi Phil, my choices would be; Sabbath - Master of Reality (their heaviest), Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (their most Prog like) and Vol 4 (probably their best). Led Zep - Led Zep II, the 4th album and Physical Graffiti. Purple - In Rock, Fireball and Burn. Heep - Look at yourself, Magicians Birthday and Live (although I remember being dissapointed with the truncated version of Magicians and the dreaded R&R medley)🙂Cheers

I agree mostly but for Sabbath I'd have two Ozzy's and Heaven & Hell, Uriah Heep...I'd probably exchange Demons with Abominog, Purple, I'd lose Come Taste (although I think it's great) and add Purpendicular, And Zeppelin I wouldn't go near Led Zeppelin 1, I might even throw in 3 just to change things up. Hallo again, Phil you did it right to show your favorites according to your experiences and feelings about these albums and I expected a different choice than mine, because you got into hard rock a few years later and the albums that accompanied our youth mean a lot to us, that's my experience ! my list is easy to do when I show the order in which I bought them, usually right after they were released and the memories associated with them in the beginning 70s, so you can guess my list - first 3 albums from Black Sabbath , Uriah Heep, Deep Purple MK2 , Led Zep I, II & IV, that's it. It's great that you responded to our objections about Heep and you're a big fan of this band yourself, which you've proven in many posts about this great band, thanks a lot for giving them a worthy place among the great ones where they belong !

Absolutely agree with Technical Ecstasy. Amazing album. Gone are the doom and gloom riffs leaving a wonderful rock album with Tony's piercing guitar solos. Wish I could say the same for the follow up...

Having grown up with all 4 bands, personally I’m not much of a Zeppelin fan, always thought they were overrated (my opinion), but when it comes to the other 3, Heep is my favourite band of all time (period), then Sabbath and Purple (although they could be switched depending on the day. My favourite Heep albums, Look at Yourself Sea of Light Chaos and Colour Although to be honest I could include so many others, Very ‘eavy,, Very ‘ umble, Demons and Wizards, Magicians Birthday, Sweet Freedom, Sonic Origami, Wake the Sleeper, Living the Dream….I could go on….lol… Sabbath Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Sabotage Master of Reality Purple Machine Head Burn Made in Japan

Hi Phil, This is great What a video I feel that 50 years ago i was a fan off those bands. For Sabbath i feel that vol4 the first notes of Wheel of confusion blow my minds I have everything of Sabbath and i adore every record. You say this before and i agree. Tony Iommi is for me a star... His solo album Fused is beautiful. and underrated!!! With geezer the sound is very specially. Now my votes Vol 4 --Sabotage, with excellent voice off Ozzy and last of the three Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Zeppelin Zeppelin 2 --4 -- Physical Graffiti Deep Purple - In Rock, Made In Japan Burn For U Heep-- Deamons and Wizards I prefer Mountain with Leslie West Flowers of Evil--Mountain 1969!--Twin Peaks, very loud! It’s so hard to make these choices. I really enjoy your approach and like your selections! I’ll use them to discover Uriah Heep which is a band that I never really got to know. I really envy people (in a positive way!) that are now going through the magic journey of discovering the music of Zeppelin, Purple and Sabbath (it takes me back 30 years!). My choices would probably be: Sabbath: Masters of Reality, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage. Purple: Machine Head, Burn, Perfect Strangers. Zeppelin: LZ III, Vol IV, Houses of the Holy.

Sabbath is the band that started it all for me. Paranoid is an amazing sophomore album. All 4 bands are excellent. 1. Sabbath and Paranoid, Black Sabbath and Volume 4. 2. Zeppelin and II, Physical Graffiti and Zofo. 3. Purple and Machine Head, Made in Japan and Burn. 4. Heep I don’t have any albums so I listen to just Easy Living. Rock on!

I was a little too young for these bands' earliest albums (we didn't get FM Radio until the 1972 Buick)...these were my initial albums- Led Zeppelin - III Black Sabbath - PARANOID Deep Purple - MACHINE HEAD Uriah Heep - DEMONS AND WIZARDS At the time, Zeppelin & Heep were 100% unknowns to me. It was all about the cool name & the cover art.

Whenever possible, I always, always suggest that someone new to a band, start from the beginning. I also tell them that they will need to be patient, but the wait will be well worth it. I think it is essential to move with the band in real time (retro it may be) so you hear and feel the changes from one album to the next. My personal opinions have to be ignored here. It's not about my feelings. Limiting to three...I would do the following: Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath, Heaven and Hell, The Eternal Idol. Three debuts from the three main Sabbath lineups. I can't ignore Dio and Tony Martin and just suggest Ozzy era stuff. Deep Purple - Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball, Made in Japan. Sorry for the other marks, but Mark II IS classic Deep Purple. Led Zeppelin - Led Zepplin, Led Zeppelin II, Led Zeppelin III. An unreal set of varied and unique songs. Uriah Heep - Look at Yourself, Demons and Wizards, Magician's Birthday

I'm just that bit too young to fully appreciate these bands. I started in '83 with Maiden at the age of ten, so all those bands were past their prime at that point and i also didn't feel the need to explore them because there was enough new music to uncover. Ofc i went back to some of those albums later on, but still couldn't find anything particular engaging. Sure some Purple and Sabbath albums are really good, but i couldn't name three records from Heep or Zep that i would recommend anybody as a "must listen". But that's also mainly because i really don't listen to rock music that much in general. Maiden was just the entry point to much darker and more extreme music.

HI Phil, I'd say you nailed the Zeppelin and Uriah Heep but there is no way a "newbie" to Black Sabbath could not be shown the Paranoid album. For Gods sake it has Warpigs, Iron Man, and Fairies Wear boots on it! I love all the Ozzy era albums but Technical Ecstasy would be something for the seasoned fan not a newcomer to the Sabs. Same thing for Deep Purple. I have them all but a newcomer to the band, despite the alluring title of "Come taste the band", would find better fare on "In Rock" which is indispensable. You can showcase the great versions of Machine Head songs on Made in Japan but In Rock is more than just Child in Time and Speed King. It really is it's own thing all the way through

Great video as always Phil. Perhaps I would have gone a different way with Purple, albeit like you my favourite song of theirs is Burn. I would stick with Ian Gillan Vocals as he is still the current vocalist and wouldn't want to confuse people. I would probably go obvious with Machine Head and then perhaps Perfect Strangers and just to show they could make great albums much later and to include Morse, Purpendicular. Perhaps with Black Sabbath I might include Heaven & Hell just because it's such a great album and it might also lead the people on to Dio as well.

Anyone new to these bands would probably gain most by having a feel for their greatest moments BS Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Heaven and Hell Headless Cross DP In Rock Burn = 1 (their most recent - why not) LZ Brown Bomber (II) 4 Symbols Physical Graffiti UH Very 'eavy ('if this band makes it I'll commit suicide' - they did! remember this comment!) Look at Yourself Wake the Sleeper (great album for UH in the modern age)

Heep are still going to be around for awhile, their farewell tour is going to last 2-3 years as they want to get to as many places as possible, after that it will be the occasional summer festival and hopefully we fans will get a new album….so if all goes well and their health stays good, Heep might get to 60 years, January will be the start of their 55th year….quite a feat…

If it wasn't for your channel or Sea of Tranquility I would not have gone back to, say, Come Taste the Band, but Its just that I get sick of channels that extol Rush ( a vocalist that can't listen to) or Deep Purple or Black Sabbath over and over again. My point is, I like the latest Crypt Sermon album and I would like someone to talk about how they have taken Back Sabbath's doom metal and Judas Priest's heavy metal made something new out of it.

Good idea for a video series Phil - I don’t think Uriah Heeo are in the same bracket of influence of Zep,Purple or Sabbath personally either - my 1st Sabbath album as a 11 year old was picked for me by the staff at Reddingtons rare records - I had no idea what to pick - and they chose -- Sabotage! (Still got it too!!!)

I would have to respectfully disagree with you that Heep are not in the same category, in my opinion Heep were as good as if not better in some ways than Purple, Sabbath or Zeppelin, they just didn’t get the credit they deserved because they started slightly behind the other 3, but were just as innovative and unique in their own way….5 part multi layered vocals, Hammond organ, Wah-wah guitar, they weren’t labeled the Beach Boys of rock for no reason…..the only one of the 4 still putting out awesome rock 54 years and counting and that’s even taking into account I have all the Purple albums, even their latest releases…but Purple’s latest albums just don’t seem to do it for me…I grew up with all 4 bands, Zeppelin in my mind has always been overrated, I have some of their albums, but I have all Sabbath’s and Purple’s….but again this is my opinion, that’s what is so great about music…

Deep Purple: Machine Head, Stormbringer and Come Taste The Band/ Black Sabbath: Black Sabbath, Paranoid and Mob Rules/Led Zeppelin: III, IV and The Song Remains The Same soundtrack.

Hey Phil ... Out of these four bands, Purple leads the way by far, then Zeppelin, Sabbath, and then Heep. It's almost an impossible task to just pick three Purple albums, but mine in order are, well your three exactly! Zeppelin, it would be Physical Graffiti, 1st album, 4th album. Sabbath, Sabotage, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and then the 1st album. Heep, your three again, in that order.

Ian Paice is fantastic, tasteful drummer. My personal opinion, but I often like Ian Paices drumming more than for example Bonzo or Keith Moon. I think I got similar taste in these bands, Physical Graphitti is my favourite LZ Album, Vol. 4/Sabbath Bloody Sabbath/Sabotage is my favourite Sabbat-albums. Maybe Mob Rules too. And Burn must be my favourite DP-album, and maybe Made in Japan thanks to the drum and guitar sounds. I love Uriah Heep too, but it is a little harder to pick favourite albums. There is good songs on all albums with David Byron. I am not that impressed with the live-album though.

Hi Phil - interesting breakdown. Am not going to go into all 3 albums from each band, however I would make the following changes. Led Zeppelin - I would include "Led Zep III". A brilliant album and I loved the acoustic Zeppelin. Deep Purple I would certainly have included "In Rock" and Black Sabbath - The first album. I lived in the UK at the time and was there at the very beginning of all these bands. Went to loads of concerts, but Uriah Heep never generated the same buzz as the other 3, they just didnt. IMHO - I just dont think Uriah Heep were in the same league. Sure - they released some great albums, no question - but I personally dont think they were at the same level as the other 3. Just my opinion - for what its worth. Cya Doug PS I would have maybe included "Cream" on the list !!

Or maybe check out Magician's Birthday and one of the better compilations as well.

I listened to Deep Purple Made In Japan for the first time last Friday on the bus between Glastonbury and Bridgwater and going record hunting in Bridgwater. I also put on Led Zeppelin Remaster for the first time in ages. Is Mothership a remaster of Remasters? I never got Uriah Heap.

Hi Phil, thanks for another great episode. For Black Sabbath I'd have to say my 3 tops are Sabatoge, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath & Master Of Reality. Led Zeppelin, Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin II, & Presence. Deep Purple: Machine Head, In Rock, Burn. For Uriah Heep while i liked them alot, I'm from the U.S and they didn't tour alot here and i only got to see them somewhat recently opening for Judas Priest, but i always loved the first Uriah Heep live album.

A good selection of albums Phil for someone who is new to any of these bands and then they can hopefully go on to discover the rest of their back catalogue. After all it is all about introducing young people to these great bands to keep their legacy alive.
