Not much love for The Mule, I see. Personal fav of mine. You might enjoy the more upbeat, more brief instrumental version they play on the Live In Stuttgart 1993 CD. And Mr. Iommi is actually agreeing with Reed and Peter on Speed King being his favorite track from In Rock, as he told Loudersound: "I always liked Deep Purple, and my favourite album of theirs is In Rock. It has one classic song after another. They always used to come up with great riffs, and Speed King is hard to beat. It’s a great, energetic song that shows every member of the band doing what they did best, Gillan’s vocals and the keyboards of Jon Lord… They were such great musicians".

Just like most people I prefer the classic albums but there is some good stuff on the later albums that is worth some shine! Favorite album is Fireball. I love the variation on it and the fact that a new track from it could have in many different directions. Favorite song? Child in Time. Hard to beat. I never really got Martin Popoffs often dislike towards slower songs or ballads. I think many hardrock bands shine in those!

Yes, everyone has their own tastes and reasons. For some, the reason for not liking a song is its bluesiness, for others, its lightness or the fact that the song falls too far out of the overall picture, although for others, these very qualities may be attractive. And this is great, this is what makes creativity (and the whole world) so diverse. Only one thing - Child in Time is not a ballad, but an epic, which is written in sonata form. Best songs: 1. Speed King, 2. Fools, 3. Highway Star, 4. Smooth Dancer, 5. Perfect Strangers, 6. Bad Attitude, 7. The Battle Rages On Worst Songs: 1. - , 2. - , 3. - , 4. - , 5. - , 6. Call Of The Wild, 7. One Man's Meat.

Best: Worst: Bloodsucker Speed King No No No No One Came Lazy Space Truckin' Mary Long Place In Line Under The Gun Hungry Daze The Spanish Archer Mitzi Dupree The Battle Rages On Another great Deep Purple analysis, so many remarkable aspects regarding this topic. I have long regarded Deep Purple as the finest group of their era, a group of virtuosos like no other in the rock era. (Hendrix and Mitch Mitchel being the only debatable exception, although they're only a duo of virtuosity) In defense of The Blues: Context people. Every band of the era had Blues chops, dating back to Elvis and Buddy Holly. You were nobody if you didn't play some Blues, and Deep Purple have probably the best chops of any English band, Rock or otherwise. David Coverdale himself said that Ritchie could make you weep during his solo spots when he broke into his Bluesy passages. The shuffle of Space Truckin', The Jazz/Blues trading of 8's and 16's during Speed King, Blood Sucker, and Living Wreck. Hard Road (Wring That Neck). Why Didn't Rosemary? All of Burn. If you don't like Blues, you probably actually don't like Deep Purple, it was originally one of their cornerstones. (A lot like Zeppelin, Earth, and everybody before, in Rock and Roll). Purple at their best was untouchable and Lazy is my Exhibit A. A super complex riff, that has evolved significantly over the years through live performance. Ritchie and Jon's ability to double it so consistently (as well as all of those other classic riffs) is testimony to their virtuosity. Ian Paice is unmatched, his ability to swing, keep time, allow the others to dictate time periodically, improvise, it's all here in one song. Then there's the improvised intros, the two key changes (three different keys), and crack timing all the way to the end, where they display such finesse. Then there's Place in Line. That was just phoning it in. That's a lot of two cents, so thanks for the platform and discussion:)

Great discussion . Jon Lord loved The Mule and so do I. Very “Telstar” sounding and resonates with Ritchie’s roots in British rock n’ roll /Hank and The Shadows 😀 I like Bad Attitude .. but I think Ritchie is a closet Thin Lizzy fan and this is basically the riff from Jail Bait .. slowed down. Child in Time has Ritchie’s best studio solo on it. No one but him could have pulled that off in 1969. Metal heads don’t relate well to sadness/sorrow and perhaps they don’t hear the depth of emotion that is the heart of this song. It’s a Ritchie favourite.. and as he said .. “I don’t listen to Deep Purple” He only really rates a fraction of the great songs he was part of .. but ONLY because he’s never satisfied WITH ANYTHING 😀 Lazy exists because they knew it would be a great live song and it would appeal to American audiences. The band have said this album had to be a big seller in America because they were so in hawk to their management/record label they HAD TO make money from it. Ian Paice said at the time that they were emulating “West coast session players” throughout the album. Again .. the sales strategy. Ritchie hates two of Purple’s best songs. Woman from Tokyo and When a blind man cries. He was wrong about both in terms of fan popularity. The “Live at the Paris Olympia” version of blind man is phenomenal. The studio version has IMHO Ritchie’s best slow solo. It’s like the situation today. Purple live can’t play anything from Burn 🔥 .. because Ian won’t sing it, yet Glenn Hughes is touring the world bringing the house down with .. mainly .. the whole of that album 🔥 as his set (I witnessed this first hand ) Like Zeppelin not playing Kashmir /black dog etc Rainbow 🌈 never played one of their best songs .. Tarot Woman live, because Ritchie said they “couldn’t make it work” I saw a tribute band make it work at “brought the house down” level Ritchie! Again .. Ritchie shooting himself in the foot. Hard Lovin’ man is the closest Purple get in a studio .. to their raw power live .. brilliant. The sonic explosion at the beginning of Speed King is one of the best opening passages of any rock album .. so good that Purple let the record company in America remove it from the USA release. ?????? Call of the Wild was great live as was Hard Lovin Woman from the same album . Mitze Dupree was a first run through which Ritchie refused to do again or do another take of his solo on .. and it sounds just like that. It’s too high for Ian to sing comfortably .. and Ritchie probably engineered it so. I loathe that song because it kind of sums up the crippling tensions in the band .. It had to be the way it was in Purple re tension (Ritchie is never satisfied for more than 2 years with ANY singer and bassist ) because that’s what happened .. but without it, they would have been the biggest band in the world for far longer than 1973 to 1974 when they outsold every band on the planet 🌍 And note, the full page adverts the record company took out to boast this achievement featured pictures of David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes … who had absolutely nothing to do with that achievement . Can you imagine that happening if they were managed by Peter Grant .. or Robert Plant and John Paul Jones not suing over that. This is the story of Deep Purple .. but they have managed to pull off a great new album in … = 1 . For the first time they have sold out the 13,000 seat arena in Glasgow.. despite playing it twice before. So looking forward to seeing them . They still have another album in them … yet in Purple style the band let the tour be called …. The = 1 more time tour . JESUS! take control guys !!!!!!

I will always remember my Dad, although being into Jazz, coming into my bedroom and liking the emotive quality of the track.Slightly off-topic Ritchie’s last notes right at the fade on the studio version of ‘Catch The Rainbow’, always has me craning my neck nearer the HiFi. Martin Popoff seems compelled to make reductive statements. I'd never blast anyone for their choices, and he is of course free to diss Child in Time. But, like his "Gary Moore was a valueless guitarist" dishwater, "Child in Time is a ballad that doesn't go anywhere" is untrue. It rocks as hard as any In Rock track, and has an ending as dramatic as that of Hard Lovin' Man. Anyone unversed in Deep Purple might assume the song is a ballad with no peaks or troughs through hearing that. What next? "Led Zeppelin 2 is a waste of time. What Is And What Should Never Be and Ramble On have the NERVE to have balladic elements!"
