In US news and current events today, Kobe & Gianna Bryant had the ultimate father-daughter relationship. The NBA star shared his love of the game with 13-year-old Gianna, who he also called GiGi and Mambacita. The latter was a play on his own nickname, Black Mamba.
Bryant coached Gigi’s AAU basketball team and they could be spotted breaking down the game together or watching his old team.
Gigi had plans to play at the University of Connecticut,
which has the country's most successful women’s basketball program. She dreamed of one day playing in the WNBA.
Kobe & his wife Vanessa had no sons, but it didn’t matter. In this interview with Jimmy Kimmel, the late NBA star explains why Gigi was proud to carry on her dad's legacy. Industry leaders praised Bryant’s unwavering support of women’s basketball.
Kobe and Gianna were mid-flight to a basketball game on Jan 26, 2020, when their helicopter crashed near Calabasas, California. All 8 passengers and the pilot were confirmed dead.

I’m so heartbroken. I don’t think I’ll get over it. I’ve been crying today whilst playing the song See You Again. It just hurts so much thinking about Kobe, her daughter, and all the others. Imagine Vanessa, when she finally comes to terms with her husband and daughter being gone, when she finally accepts, imagine her saying “Until I see you again my babies”. Every time I think about what she’s going through and what she’ll be going through, how I wish I can carry some of the weight in her heart. It's just tragic. All of it. I grew up 5 minutes from where the crash happened too so I know this area, I know that mountain. I've driven past it countless times. My complements to this channel for doing something to cover her loss as well. I just said to my wife this morning that as a father I know that Kobe would rather there be memorials to his baby not him. I have tried to keep in mind that its a good thing that he was able to be there with her so his baby had him to hold her so she wouldn't have been as scared. There were several victims in the crash all with families and all of whom deserve our empathy not just the one who sold the most merchandise.
