I kind of thought that Yuji would've had abnormal powers even before eating the finger in the series. It was evident when the coach kept on pressuring him to be part of the team and then he threw a ball I think and he also ran and he was abnormally fast. After he passed Megumi I kind of thought, "this kid is already not normal... what does he need the finger for?" (I watched a bit of the series before actually watching it) so it was very evident early on.
