Great show guys. Yes! I work in solar grid installations (anywhere from 50~1000MW sites), and we currently use trackers with bifacial panels. We see it is more economical to use bifacial panels because the energy from incident (reflected) light even off the ground below the arrays, results in considerable additional energy production. As you note, it's all of the array design options (vertical, horizontal, tracking) that enable us to optimise the energy from the site. Great stuff to inform the wider audience. Thanks!

I don’t agree with it either, but I also would rather that EVs get a market boost than not at all. Those of us who already own pure EVs know that the more people that own EVs means more points of influence for others to switch. As well as, in most cases, owning a hybrid is just a gateway to owning an EV. I use to own Toyota hybrids myself. Then eventually went all the way to EV. Plug-in Hybrids might not convert everyone, but it’s helps those who initially can’t accept some of the negative misconception of pure EVs.

One about EV not paying for road taxes. So there were different options being tossed around. One was going on mileage the EV per year. Another was putting GPS on EV and having a charge per what roads you traveled on to pay for road taxes. Charges on county roads was the cheapest as per six lane highway was the highest. I would guess it be charged when charging the EV.

Tracking systems for solar have proven over decades of attempted use to be literally worthless. Expensive to install, **extremely** expensive if sized correctly to handle extreme weather events, and the moving parts break or wear out much faster than you would think. What you need is vertical panels on two sides and then a narrow strip of single panels along the top of an inverted U-shaped frame to catch some of the midday solar energy. The panels are still getting cheaper every year, and the whole thing could probably still be less than two feet wide/deep and mostly vertical. Maybe even just 12-18 inches. With the amount of money you save by avoiding tracking mechanisms with moving parts, you can buy at least twice as many high efficiency panels.
@ehtuanK2 жыл бұрын
While the tracking is a problem with two-axle heliostats, I'd be surprised if it was that bad for single axle PV rows. Covering a hectare with heliostats that take up 2x2 meters requires 2500 heliostats = 5000 motors. Using 2 meter wide PV rows, you would only need 50 rows = 50 motors. This reduces the number of moving parts by a factor of one hundred. Single axle is also much more mechanically stable than double axle drives, since you can support the PV panels along the entire length.

@terrancevangemert75082 жыл бұрын
In Canada if one sells a house with 100 amp or less service and or there are not enough breakers then the panels have to be upgraded. Its about $5,000 CDN job because of new panel and old panel swapping in less than a day. Takes two electricians and also if there has to be separate Access. Duplex had single power in and split with meters inside the house. To move meters outside and upgrade panels cost big $$. and split the duplex to separate power lines to each home. Main Breaker on Panel can go up to 150 amps. The original service was 70 amps and now it is 100amps. Do not need that meter thingy.

@Gsman92 жыл бұрын
The EV charger adapter will likely require utility, permitting office and UL approval prior to installation. This will initially take longer than just an upgraded panel, however long run be great. Kind of an overview that people maybe not aware: Once the UL, if it hasn't already, certified the equipment, the permitting offices will need to review and approve it as well. After that is done, the utilities will review and go through it's own approval process, sometimes non-refundable fee. Once all is approved, the utility will have to shut-off power in what is referred to as a TDR, temporary disconnect reconnect, and depending on the specific utility this process could take time. The TDR involves the utility to schedule a date when a tech is available to meet with an installer/electrician and will probably require a disconnect switch to be installed nearby. This product would do well to be packaged with companies/electrician familiar with installing EV chargers, however likely be up sold on additional products and/or services

I have already been thinking of updating my fence with bifacial solar panels. Not shading. I wonder if they can be solid enough to be used as a fence.
@suunraze2 жыл бұрын
I have studied the vertical bifacial modules before. The way the math works out, with today's prices of batteries and PV modules, vertical bifacial modules result in the least-cost mix of PV and storage to reach 100% renewable penetration. In other words, the efficiencies of producing the energy at the right time outweigh the penalties of producing less total energy per molecule of doped silicon
@suunraze2 жыл бұрын
Another lesson to learn from this is that residential roofs with a north-south ridge are actually superior for PV than those with east-west ridges, especially as material costs for PV fall and grid penetration of renewables rises
@suunraze2 жыл бұрын
Also, for large flat roofs, if PV material cost is not an issue, laying out the modules tilted alternating east-west instead of south results in more total daily energy production (less per module but more per roof surface area) and also spread more evenly throughout the day. I'm kinda surprised that Giga Texas is not already doing this.

I have long wanted EVs to start to make central tire air pressure control a standard feature. They have the available power and air compressor is not a very expensive part, then it's just running air lines down the axles with good vales and write some software to let the system set tire pressure to get best range (and lower pressure if needed to for extra traction) maybe sedans don't need it but crossovers, SUVs, and ev pickupsl owners would appreciate it. Seems like a great addition to the cyber truck if nothing else.

It is nice the Rivian gives feedback that aggressive driving or other factors are effecting range. Maybe there is a middle ground where rated range is show, and then some indicator of how the last ~20 miles of driving lines up with that prediction, above or below range.

I actually noticed the range increase (no change in my % charge) as my wthrs/ mile improved. Thus, I disagree with Jess. /// Regarding the product which allows you to skip an upgrade on your service panel, I just had this issue with our son who needed a charger in his garage. The electrician saw that our son didn't have enough amps for another 220, but suggested a separate off peak meter...saving the cost of an upgraded panel plus cheaper to install PLUS it will pay for itself over time. This was Exel energy. The cost of off peak here in MN is 4cents per kWh (7cents with tax)...about half that via a regular outlet, depending upon the season. Example of cost of driving our Tesla using off peak: 100 miles takes about 25 kWh's---$1.75. Gas (25 mpg for a mid size car): 100 miles takes 4 gal for $16-$20 depending on the price.

I have an M3 on order since May. It’s estimated delivery in October. I wonder if I can put it off until January? Why the heck wouldn’t I wait for $7,500 bucks, but will they let me delay delivery?

Considering the world's battery supply problems, it seems like the subsidy should favor efficient cars over suvs.

The EV rebate isn't for customers. It is simply a way to help legacy automotive stay in business while they struggle to make EVs at a profit. It's a bailout, without calling it a bailout.
