Actress and social justice advocate Ashley Judd will speak May 9 at a National Press Club Headliners luncheon on the need for responsible and respectful reporting on suicides.
Judd's mother, Grammy-winning country music artist Naomi Judd was suffering from mental illness when she died by suicide on April 30, 2022.
"The trauma of discovering and then holding her laboring body haunts my nights," Ashley Judd wrote in The New York Times. "As my family and I continue to mourn our loss, the rampant and cruel misinformation that has spread about her death, and about our relationships with her, stalks my days."
Judd will speak about the trauma her family suffered, how reporters can report more responsibly on suicide, and the need for more robust privacy laws.
Remarks begin at 1 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session ending at 2 p.m.
To submit a question in advance for the speaker, put JUDD in the subject line and email it to headliners@press.org. The deadline for submitting questions in advance is 10 a.m. on the day of the luncheon.

Ashley is an articulate, compassionate individual who has clearly endured unspeakable insensitivity and violations into her family's tradegy. Thank you for promoting guidelines for media. Journalistic integrity....does anybody really understand how important this is to human rights? You are loved and respected, Ms. Ashley. Stay strong.

I as a suicide survivor and person dealing with mental illness. It's not respective of persons. There is NOT. Adequate mental services. Despite what people believe. Accessing help is next to impossible. Hospitalizations is more punitive. Than therapeutic. We must do better. All life is valuable. Thank you Ashley

Thank you Ashley for speaking out. This is what so many people go through. It's horrible and inhumane. The training of the police is very damaging and unprofessional and of course NOT evidence based. I am so sorry. Like so much in our country that has been weaponized against American citizens - decisions about our healthcare and mental health should never be left in the hands of anyone except expert mental health and medical professionals NOT police officers.

Ashley addresses the issue with the grace expertise, and passion expected given her track record. The host failed miserably. Some very important issues were addressed here and when we get to a point when the conversation is being had between to equal parties we will perhaps gain ground. Putting this amateur on the stage, with a microphone, and in the presence of an individual of Ashley's caliber saddens me. It leaves me feeling as if NPC simply wanted the recognition of holding such an event, instead of joining in the movement to actually make things happen...and move in the right direction. That said...something is better than nothing...and everything starts somewhere. Kudo's again to Ashley. We love you, and we love your mom.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom, insight and truth. I work in social service psychological field. I understand and see! It does not need to be blatantly reported for the benefit of $ or status. It hurts, it’s shameful and haunting. It’s is a mental health crisis!

I have a really hard time grasping the term, death "by" suicide. I have studied it, learned about why it is said in that way, yet, I disagree. It's as if to say there is no control or power within to make a choice. I can understand, death by depression or mental illness. We can't control having an illness. But there is a last form of empowerment when able to choose how we die. I understand suicide and the feelings associated with it all too well. I have educated myself with regards to it. I just disagree with the term "by suicide". Committed, is to say, you followed through and succeeded in doing so. I wish there was a term for the "attempted" part. Because for whatever reason God choose for eyes to open, I still made that choice and saw it through. There is an incredible stigma for those that "survived" suicide. So they stay silent until they can do so with absolute completion. What support group exists for those that made the "attempt" ? Not the attempt for the sake of throwing a red flag, but the "attempt" that for whatever reason, god said, not yet. If the stigma of those that survived it went away, the chance to learn what brings a person to that critical point, could truly be learned and hopefully be really prevented from happening again.

I don't agree with a lot of Ashley's SJW beliefs but on this subject I do agree with her. I agree with her about the media, especially the way her activism about sexual violence in Africa has essentially been blackballed because it doesn't fit with current woke culture. For those that don't know, she went to Africa to see gorilla's in the wild but broke her leg, she was taken to a hospital for treatment and discovered that it was filled with women who had been brutally raped by Islamic soldiers in the name of Allah. Women and young girls were so viciously sexually attacked that their sex organs were basically destroyed and the had to travel to these hospital from the brush to get some kind of treatment. This type of violence, along with other massacres, is ongoing and relentless in Africa but given minimal press coverage in the West. The media will give her some coverage as long as she stays within PC parameters but have essentially ignored her activism to stop this kind of sexual violence in Africa.

Using death by suicide and not committed takes the blame off Ashley’s mother or the person who did the act! Here again we never hold people responsible for their actions! I understand depression is real and the results are horrible! The real questions should be how we can help stop the act instead of redefining the action!

I say this kindly to the comment above, but it seems like your understanding of the research Ms. Judd presented and the reason why new terminology is needed has been missed. Unfortunately, I had two parents with mental illness and the research I have done has been extremely helpful. I ask that you continue to research to learn more. Ms. Judd gave research AND solutions in prevention based on research. I’m misunderstanding the points you presented.

The disease is to blame for suicide, NOT the person. For some the pain is too much, mental anguish and the feeling of despair is too much to bear. Naomi went thru so many procedures, even electrical convulsive therapy , 38:07 sought so many doctors, psychiatrists, and she did a lot of research on her own. She tried and just couldn’t continue anymore. RIP Naomi, I definitely agree the way a suicide occurred should not be made available to .the public

"death by suicide" Is a technical term . People with Common sense knows what this means. "death by suicide" means A person who takes their own life , that person "committed" suicide . The Term committed means that its against the law , attempted suicide is against the law. Suicide is against the law by a legal term because of life insurance wont pay out on a suicide since it's NOT a legal death therefore "committed" .

That’s fine, Ash but I’m utterly confused by the fact that in her own book she describes her mother as selfish and a narcissist. We all know Naomi was bipolar and had a personality disorder on top of it so why rewrite history to paint her as a saint? She wasn’t a nice person (look how she screwed up Wynonna) so let’s just toss it up to mental illness and let the law enforcement do their job
@SarahRenz59

Understanding a dysfunctional parent is a process that takes many years, and your feelings/opinions can evolve over time. Mental illness is always hard for others to understand because the illness affects behavior. When someone with mental illness is behaving badly towards you, it can be difficult to discern whether it's the illness or the person's innate character that's driving the behavior. You have to get past your own hurt feelings to evaluate that behavior objectively. Ashley published her book in 2011; in the 12 years since I assume she's come to the conclusion that Naomi's illness drove much of her behavior and she now has more compassion for her.
