Out of the big 3 FA SP, Snell is the obvious pick for who you want starting a playoff game, and yet they got him at a cheaper deal than Burnes (most likely will get). Dodgers being Dodgers (smarter than everyone else)

Dodgers used 40 different pitchers last season and still won 98 games. I believe 17 different starters. 4 rookies as starters too. Pretty remarkable.

Yankees did that for years and it was good for baseball, so don't assume. Super team in MLB will be good for baseball, if you don't agree you'll see. For all the Dodger Haters, keep hating that means were doing something good ;) .

You are too nice. I understand why. I'm a Yankees fan. I love what the dodgers are doing. EVERY owner can do the same. But they are all cheap billionaires and don't care about winning! Most owners in baseball suck because they don't care about their fan base.
@littlesame4 күн бұрын
Amen to what you said, most owners don’t care about the fans and most only seek to reap the profit to be invested elsewhere not on their teams. Salary floor is one way to possibly improve the scale

Exactly. Angels owner arte moreno is a classic example. He makes a fortune every year and cares nothing about winning. He had Mike Trout and Ohtani on his team, but was too cheap and stupid to spend the money to fill the missing pieces. Last year the idiot blamed Phil Nevin for their losing and fired him, then brought in a has been Ron Washington and they finished in last place. Good job arte.

There are currently 10 teams that have a salary that is less than what they receive in free revenue sharing money. Pirates 85 million salary, got 120 million from MLB sharing. Out of pocket payroll salary ZERO, remaining 35 million owners pocket. 10 MLB teams under 120 million spending ZERO on payroll. A's 60 million payroll, owner pocketed 60 million not 1 cent from their own money or profits to payroll. 10 MLB teams doing this BS. But the Dodgers, Yankees, Padres and Mets are evil because they actually care about winning? The teams that don't even spend the free 120m money they are given by MLB Royals − $115,257,261 Reds − $106,441,547 Brewers − $105,833,094 Tigers − $103,834,833 Rays − $101,023,112 Marlins − $97,227,400 Orioles − $94,520,400 Guardians − $93,333,629 Pirates − $85,760,000 Athletics − $60,503,298

As a tax attorney, there are some misstatements here. Assuming a true signing bonus that is payable upon signing and without refund stipulations, then residency is the determination for state tax purposes. Here, assuming a true signing bonus, WA has jurisdiction to tax, not CA

What's the point in sharing with the small markets like football when football has teams like Carolina, Las Vegas, Cleveland and many more that don't know what to do with the money. Money helps, but you still have to know what to do, look at the Mets 2 seasons ago.
@dachozenjuan17254 күн бұрын
Mets, Yankees, Boston, Chicago, and other big city teams can do the same.

MLB is like European soccer. A couple of good teams. Mid teams that have good young talent and teams that have players slightly above minor league level. I'd like to see MLB go to a champions league system and involve the leagues of Asia. This model would grow the game more than a NFL system. Baseball is more international than American football.
@samuelsandate9804Күн бұрын
What? Are you drunk or what? Baseball is nowhere near the European soccer leagues. Over there only like 3 to 5 teams are actually winning it every year. Over the last 10, 9 different teams have won the World Series. Baseball is by far more competitive than any other sport in the world. No team has repeated in 20+ years, and more teams actually have a shot. Your comparisons are ridiculous and clueless.
@Bobbydawriter4 күн бұрын
The reality is pitchers today end up on the injured list at an alarming rate. For a team like the Dodgers they can stack great starting pitching and still end up struggling to find three starters in October. It’s not a luxury anymore it’s a necessity… Otherwise you’re blowing all the other money you’ve spent to build a championship team. Good for them.

Your take on league revenue share is off the mark. The NFL has a salary cap ...that is what promotes competition. You're asking for a handout for small market teams. Put in a salary floor first so that the bottom dwelling teams can't keep tanking their teams (or get them to sell to owners that can spend).

The Dodgers, in a way, had to do this. They had a cadre of injured starting pitchers, and would have had an even more injured bullpen, if they had to continue in the season with additionally injured starting pitching. Flaherty also pooped the bed a few times during the post-season, and I don't know how Buehler survived the post-season. If they were going to make a team-improving move this off-season, it had to be a SP.
@calguy3838Күн бұрын
Does anybody really think the goal of the signing bonus is to avoid FEDERAL taxes? Of course it isn't. It's all about state income tax. Washington has no state income tax, while California has a progressive state income tax with a maximum bracket of %12.3, which is where most of that signing bonus would be taxed if it were paid out as income for services rendered in California.

Comparing the NFL situation to the MLB situation is completely wrong. NFL teams do not make a significant part of their revenue from ticket sales. MLB does. So, revenue sharing from would never work for MLB. Further, all TV contracts for MLB are local. There are no local TV contracts for NFL. You're comparing apples and oranges.
