I have 2023 S580; not sure if there was an over air update or what but for the first 3 months or so I did have to start the recording manually on start up but now it does turn on automatically at start up 👍

Nick - I think the auto recording is geo restricted only. Me in the U.S., my 2024 GLE will auto record the moment I start my car (even with engine off as long as power is switched on). I believe mine is NTG7 as it has "starry" animation as you pointed out. Love your videos, super helpful! Learned a lot tricks from you.

I just picked up my 2024 GLC 300, the dashcam has good resolution, I can easily read a license plate on the videos. It also turns on automatically in the US, seems like it takes 10-15 seconds to start recording. My previous dashcam I turned off the sound recording because I don't need my conversations being recorded so I'm fine with it not recording sound.

I have the factory dash cam on my 2021 AMG GLC 43. I would not order it again if i had it to do over. It doesn't auto start. It takes it up to 2 minutes to be available to start recording after engine start so you are already down the road before you can even start it unless you want to sit there idling for up to 2 minutes. The resolution is terrible. You cant even read the license plate of the car in front of you at a stop light at night. The augmented reality feature it enables for the satnav is marginally useful. I'd probably just buy an aftermarket dash cam for the cost if i had it to do over.

I have Blackvue cameras installed in additon which I transferred over from my previous model 2019 A35 to new facelift 2023 A35, what I have found is that new model is a hybrid and unlike previous model the camera system stays in parking mode with motion detection because of the 12v battery having to be constantly operational. Main issue is if you don't drive the car for few days everyday or leave idle for sometime if you go on holiday then that 12v battery will start sending alerts that certain key features like starting the car will be non operational.

Hi Nick, I can confirm that you can have automatic recording with the inbuilt dash cam (here in Australia anyway) it gives you the choice to automatically start recording (in a GLC 300 Coupe)

Auto start must be a regulation, because my 2023 dashcam does autostart, but I am in the US. I know autostart was new for 2023 as even my dealer was surprised it could be done. I can also play back on my car even though I have v6 and not v7.

I bought it on NTG6 and indeed, in Romania, it doesn’t automatically start. Which is a real pain and I always forget. BUT, I will try “Hey Mercedes start dashcam recording”, just found out about it today on Nick’s other video and it’s a brilliant idea. Hopefully it will help me never forget again. Also playback is working on NTG6 by going to Media > USB. Thanks Nick for your work, as always

If this does not include auto start, whats the point. I bet at some point of time, one is going to miss "start recording command" and as murphy's law would have it - thats exactly when one will get involved in an incident/ accident. I got the Merc dashcam installed in my V167 GLE and have been very happy with it. Night time recording is great, day time recording is very crisp - has 24 hour parking recording with radar sensing and a wifi playback for driving/ parking videos. Just works great. I wonder why its rear companion camera is always out of stock - worldwide. I had to settle in for a 3rd party camera for that one.

When I had my A Class (W177) I almost got the built-in dashcam, so I can see the appeal of not having to worry about routing cables etc. However, if you can route some cables safely (please be careful and don't route cables over the A pillar airbags!), for the money you pay for the Mercedes Dashcam, you can get a 4K Viofo with Front & Rear Dashcam. It will stay with you when you sell your car, the quality of the recordings is much better in my opinion, it has microphone and mine even has WiFi - so I can download footage to my phone in an emergency. You can also have filters to avoid the dashboard glare too - something you won't be able to do on the built-in dashcam. The bonus feature on a third-party dashcam is the parking mode - although Teslas have Sentry Mode - it is parking recording and it records all 4 sides of the car (front, left, right and rear) - I believe is paid feature though - like an extra/option.

I have a 2019 EQC (with NTG6), and the dashcam footage *can* be viewed in the car - although the playback image is smaller than you showed with NTG7. However, it is not intuitive how you view the videos. To do so: Press the Media button, select USB, then select Folders, and navigate to your DashCam memory stick (other memory stick folders also show up here).

I have a MBUX7 on my C Class. It’s great but so annoying having to manually set it to run every trip. I still forget to do it 50% of the time. With the Guard 360 it does the pictures when someone bumps into the car when Im away.

Hi Nick, in cars with NTG7 where the 360 camera is equipped there is the 360 guard feature which you can buy in the mercedes me store (at least in germany). This will do screenshots of all 5 cameras if someone hits into your car will you are parked. Photos are stored on MBUX and sent to your phone. If this is available in UK you could try it out? You have to shake on your parked car to simulate a park damage 😊

Hi Nick, another useful video. I've had the app on NTG6 for 2 years. Very useful, but remembering to start it every time can be a problem, as this has to be done every the ignition is turned off. Also loop recording is OK for most of the time, but I've had problems a couple of times when system has stopped when flash drive is full. Also, I can playback on the multimedia system on mine. Seems to be there are several anomalies!! however, all in all a very useful feature.

I have the same car as you and looked at the in built dash cam. First thing that put me off was the £200 activation, ouch. And it is so limited in its functioning. Ie on or off. I purchased the next base 522 with the optional rear window add on camera. And it’s brilliant. Can’t fault it with loads of permutations for setting up, parking, movement etc. down side is wiring but managed to hide everything. Keep up the great work.

@@J10Wilshere hi yes I wired it myself. Took about 2 hours. Fitted it top right hand side of windscreen, and fed live feed down window strut, removed small access panel and fed cable back to transmission tunnel behind the steering wheel. Fed cable along tunnel just tucking it up under edge of pvc cover. Removed rear seat usb panel and brought cable up into that space, then removed felt cover from storage bin on tunnel and bored 3/8 hole through base of storage bin and brought cable up and connected into the C usb port. The rear camera was just wired along the top of the door struts to the rear window. Only cables showing are at the top of the windscreen about 25mm each cable. I did buy a set of plastic pry tools which were invaluable, hope this helps.

Just a tip: This might be country specific, but if you enable “Loop Recording”, you can go to the Dashcam Settings and enable “Automatic Start Recording”. Atleast in Denmark, using NTG7, this is possible.

FYI 10/26/24; Downloaded the USA dash cam software '24 GLE450 running NGT 7, now the cam automatically now starts to record as soon as you start the car. The cam icon on the screen shows a red dot. Thank you I LOVE your helpful MB videos learned a lot.

Just purchased a 2023 S580 in the US. Once I log-in with my fingerprint, the Dashcam automatically starts recording entire time driving in small time segments onto my external drive. I would like it if it would record when parked, but it doesn’t, especially in a parking lot when parked and someone gets close (Tesla does this really well). I have a 2 TB Disk connected in the center console to save recordings. Love your videos - interesting to see the difference in what UK allows and what US allows in terms of Lights, Recordings and other fascinating features.

Hey Nick. I’ve just purchased the dashcam function via Mercedes Me. I have a 2021 GLC running NTG6. I’m struggling to add the dash am as a favourite (for quick access from the * button) - I’ve tried 2 ways.. 1 - add new favourite. It doesn’t have “apps” in there. 2 - when in the dashcam app, I’ve tried holding down the record button to favourite, which looks like it should work, but I get an error saying “can’t do this function” Any suggestions where I’m going wrong?

Hi Nick, Thanks for the video update. I bought the in-built one a few weeks back. Its Ok. 720 footage is reasonable quality. You will see what you need to see in an event. Waiting for 1 min before you can start it is annoying. I often start driving before that. Trying to remember to start the actual recording is another thing. I would though, advise your viewers not to get any cheap ole USB. I had one installed in the car and almost had an accident in my recently purchased '21 plate Mercedes-Benz GLA. When I got home and reviewed the footage, the near-miss did not record! Most of the journey from my house to destination did but there was a gap in the recording at the crucial moment. My first port of call to solve this was the USB. I bought a new Scandisk USB with a read speed of 150mb/second. I have reviewed footage since and every journey is complete. BTW, on my model you can only open the MBUX Dashcam file with VLC free software. This shouldn't be the case as MP4 is a standard. Videos are recorded in two minute segemts, however, in the VLC menu, you can select multiple files and play the complete journey as opposed to just playing one at a time. Hope this info helps some of your viewers. 😉

I have AR, (NTG6) but no dashcam… Mercedes says it is not possible on my car because AR is not the only feature u need for dashcam… they say you need also traffic light animation on screen and when moving your hands reconizing or something. I have a Blackvue 900 dual dashcam. Payd almost €2500 for to built in. With a battery package. And a internetconnection. Live view and cloud function so I can see and download everything on my phone. It works fine👌🏾

I just took delivery of a 2024 E450 All Terrain in USA and added the dashcam feature. In Loop Recording it automatically starts and stops when pressing Start, accompanied by center scrn messages announcing status. The dashcam icon top right of screen shows the red dot indicating function. On my prior 2019 E450 I DIY'd my own dashcam with an inexpensive 4k/30fps/stabilized goPro clone tucked up near the top of the windscreen next to the passenger visor. I used a 30k mah USB power bank attached securely to the inside of the passenger sun visor with a 3" wide hook-and-loop cinch strap. No affect to visor function and power would last for literally days if I forgot to turn it off, so you could leave it on while parked. If you DIY a dashcam, a USB power bank is a relatively clean, almost-wireless power solution.

What about the footage from all the other cameras? Apart from that dashcam, there are maybe 3 front, 2 under mirrors and one in the rear. Does it record them and if not, any idea how to access the feed and record them via the OBD port or something?

For the other cameras on a car they’re not suitable for recording because they’re outside and exposed to the elements. They’re just parking cameras and are situated in places that will not get a good view. They’re lower down and have dirt flick up from the road. The best place would be eye line and in line with what the driver sees 🙏

I mentioned before I have a transcend dash cam for 7 years now. It auto starts. Also, it has an automatic feature where if I am in a collision or have to brake hard it saves footage to an emergency folder on the SD card. So for me until the built in one can do what my third party dashcam can then it an No from me.

Thanks for the video review Nick. I currently have a non-Mercedes Dashcam with front and rear cameras which work very well. I did talk to my MB dealer before having the dashcam fitted as i was looking for a MB solution. They advised me that it would void the warranty on the car if i had an aftermarket system fitted. I decided to go ahead anyway and i'm glad i did as the cameras have proved invaluable on two occasions.

No worries! I’m planning on checking out some Dashcams later this year and that is one thing I want to clarify with some manufacturers officially. Under my understanding (not verified yet), wiring a dashcam would be fine and not invalidate a warranty. The “warranty invalidation” is when something goes wrong. Say for example someone installed it for you but then something stopped working on the car because of it, then you wouldn’t be covered for that item. Again that’s how I see it, I want to get it clarified way before I make some videos on Dashcams anyway.

It's not available in France, but i set my ADDRESS in my online profile to another country (i chose the Netherlands) and then the option showed up in the phone app . Bought it and then set my address back to France . The camera starts recording automatically (you have to activate it in settings) - The image is pretty crappy though.

Hi Nick, great video...just took delivery of my GLC 300d Premium Plus which I am wanting to fit the dashcam feature (via provided built in app) so this was very helpful. I had a new Touareg R+ for 4 years with inbuilt VW/Audi front and rear dashcams...they autostarted and also when you parked confirmed 'vehicle parked and in surveillance mode'...when you next started up it insisted (rather reassuringly) on telling you surveillance off and in drive mode...once fitted you truly forgot about it until you needed it (twice) and as it was on constant loop with 3 min vids with GPS and crash sensor (with auto enhancement mode 3 see before and after) it always worked like a charm...really miss it...I could watch myself cleaning the car in real time or playback if I was really bored.. :)...

I just bought an a200l after the facelift. I see on the windshield something similar to what you show in the video. I seemingly have two lenses - the upper one for sign recognition and the lower one. However, there is no lens there but a cap (?). Is it possible that this is not installed and is there any chance that Mercedes can add it?

They’ll usually be two things at the top, one is a light and rain sensor and the other will be for brake assist or lane assist systems. The very bottom part is for Augmented Reality which you must spec at factory, you wouldn’t be able to get it fitted afterward as sadly main Mercedes dealers will not and cannot “retrofit” things. They’re only allowed to sell cars as they’re described as per their spec sheets.

So Mercedes don’t publish that information but I had a quick look at my archive from when I reviewed the in-built Dash cam and it appears that each 2 min file is approx 240MB. So if you scale that up to 8GB, it’ll probably hold around an hour of a journey with 8GB. Then scale it up to 128GB it’ll be well over 12 hours of footage. At least according to their manual it supports up to 2TB (2,000GB) so if you need more then get a larger size. Hope that helps!

Interesting fact: the latest BMW X1 (at least in Poland), when specd with the 360 cameras, will automatically record the drive (from all cameras). When you want to save the recording (internal drive too), you just long press the parking camera button. It will save up to 30 secs preceding the button press, and 30 secs following the press. Neat stuff!

So as you can leave comments you most likely (believe it or not) have a KZbin account where you can upload videos. You can upload onto there and leave the video as “Unlisted”. This means that anyone can view the video but only with the link you send them (for example your insurance company) If you mark Private then only you will be able to see it. There’s also a separate service called WeTransfer, the links expire within 7 days though so you could use that too. Both are free I should add!

For a USB storage like a USB stick you can use any port in the front. Just not the ones for rear passengers 🤓 Just bear in mind that you might need to test that out, I know that MBUX will only recognise one USB device at a time. Just not sure if it’ll do CarPlay (wired) and dashcam at the same time.

Thank goodness my 2023 C43 AMG automatically starts recording 360° when an “accident” is detected! I can activate it by rocking the car with my foot on the bumper. The car sends it right to my iPhone via MercedesMe. I’m wondering if the dash cam will do that without a memory stick too? Does anyone in the USA know?

I decided to add this to my new A250e as it was a simple solution and avoided having to stick something else on the screen and having to route power to it. I admit having to manually start it is a faff but the real pain is having to wait for the app to load which seems to take about 10 secs or more after pressing the start button. Bearing in mind the camera already exists I think MB are asking a lot of money for this. TBH I wouldn’t do it again, I’d go down the third party route.

All car manufacturers change the specs several times throughout the year. I cover a few of them and they all do the same. It depends on the brochure and when your car was built and of course the specs available at the time. Yes you can ask a dealer to help run through the spec of the car but I don’t believe they can give you a spec sheet as such. You’ll have to ask them 😎 I do have an archive of Mercedes brochures for the UK if that helps. Hi Nick, My Tesla, in Canada, records the cameras all around the car all the time, automatically. If I want to save a piece of footage, I just blow the horn. I wonder if Teslas in the UK do that automatically or are they manual start. Thinking of getting back into a 2024 GLC Coupe PHEV when they are released over here.

Hi Nick. Nice video. I got the dashcamera NTG7 in my Glc 400e and in denmark it comes with autostart.😊I'm not impressed with the video quality in spite it's 1920x1280. It only capture with 25 frames/sec. and it's not enough when you freeze the picture on moving cars to see the numberplates properly.

I have an E 400 from 2022, with Augmented + 360 cameras, Dashcam License available but deactivated. Option available only on the System Menu of the MBUX , under the “Licenses” and not available on my MercedesMe as option to purchase. I asked the MB dealer from where I bought the car to check and to activate it and he took almost a week to get an official statement from MB that this option is not possible to activate because in Germany is not allowed. Now I plan to revert to my Blackvue 4K as I found the Dashcam quite useful. I wanted to avoid installing or adding any more wires, but this is it .. Resolution was anyway a joke 720p, I guess, is only ok to distinguish colors and shapes but true is better sometimes than nothing.

I really had the situation when the other guy in front of me revers his car while waiting at the red light and claim that I hit him from behind. Without having the Daschcam I would probably had to go in court and judge as it was my word against his. With the Dashcam, situation was solved in 15 mins, and the driver had to retract his words and admit his fault after seeing the video. Nevertheless by low, in Germany, these video evidences are not taken into consideration if go in court. So, I got lucky the guy acknowledge this fault after seeing the video. @@npoleary

The lack of an auto start would be a deal breaker for me. I invariably drive my C200 in eco mode, and it took me a long time (years!) to remember to switch it over when I set off. (And it passing it's a nuisance that you can't set the car to default to eco or whatever you prefer.) Also, re cost, I assume it's an annual subscription like all the other Mercedes me add ons. You didn't mention how much it costs, but I bet it would quickly overtake the cost of a separate dash cam.

Yes it would be good if like my Dynamic Select would retain the settings but sadly it will always reset to the default driving profile which in Mercedes is Comfort. Ah no it’s a one time purchase. I have an E53 coupe 2023, and the recording function does not reliably work when starting the car. Sometimes it takes a good 5 minutes for it to confirm its started recording. I've tried with different USB sticks (both USB A and C) but I get the same pattern of unreliability. Have you ever seen this or know if its a known issue? Otherwise I'll get MB to check it out.

No sadly not, it worked fine for me :( It might not be this as you’ve tried another memory stick but make sure they’ve got good read/write speeds. It needs to be good to cope with the constant writing of data to the memory stick. I found this when I made a dashcam video a couple of years ago. Maybe reach out to Mercedes and see what they say?

It depends on the specification, it’s an Augmented Reality Camera on most cars like mine but depending on availability and where you live you can upgrade it to a dashcam again like what I did. Does the Sandisk stick need to be in the main USB C port in the front console or can you use any of the USB A ports inside the armrest console? When you first start it up, are there onscreen instructions? How many Gigs is best for the memory stick?

They’re all USB-C (unless it’s different round the world). Just press Home and go to Apps and you’ll see Dashcam if the car has it or you’ve purchased it. It depends how long you want to record for, I would say for 720p / 1080p footage a minimum of 32GB, ideally 64GB or higher to record at least a few hours / days with depending on your driving.

That sounds to me like you’ve using a cheaper memory card or USB stick. Not saying you have for sure as I can’t see it in person, but it sounds like the symptoms of something like that. Over the years I’ve experienced a whole world of pain with memory cards, trying to buy the cheapest ones possible for filming my videos on KZbin. The most extreme case is my main camera where you see most of the high quality shots, it has to take memory cards with a very high read and write speed (price…over £150 per card!! 😔). GoPro’s are similar where they need a high read and write speed but are nowhere near as expensive. Check the description of the video, it’s got the cheapest card I could find but has the highest read/write speed. For a Mercedes multimedia system, it’s plenty. They’re just over £10 the last time I looked. I’ve had no issues with them recording hours and hours of footage.

No sadly the rear camera is a reversing camera. It’s outside and is two low for dashcam footage. Being outside it’s behind a cover to prevent it getting dirty all the time and it’s far too low, dashcams need to be eye level for example at the height of the rear window.

Just depends on the car, your car and my car might be quite similar where there aren't too many things to buy. But some cars offer loads of things. Just depends on the specification. If yours is a plug-in hybrid you should be able to do the heating and cooling remotely which is pretty cool!

Well it depends on what your car originally has, you wouldn’t be able to just buy a head up display though. You’d need a completely new dashboard as it has a cut out for the elements to work. Hi Nick, Ive got the NTG6 on my S213 E53 and I’m using Loop Recording; however on some occasions it does not work at all even after 1 hour of driving, I get the message ‘Function Unavailable’. This still occurs even if I delete 90% of the footage from the USB !!

Have you tried formatting the memory stick / or the device you’re using to save the footage on? I have to do this from time to time for my camera equipment and including my 3rd party dashcam. Also check to make sure the memory stick / external storage has fast data transfer speeds.

@@npoleary Hi Nick, no I have not tried re-formatting the memory stick because it has my music in the 'Music' folder, SCDB Speed Cams in the "POI' folder and the MB Dashcam in the 'POI' folder all on the same stick. There is however, a good reason for putting everything on the same stick because when I bought the car I had my music and SCDB cams on one stick and the MB dashcam on a second stick. However, MBUX does not work correctly with two separate sticks and this is well documented by users on the MB Forums. Lots of guys are saying that the MBUX system is in need of a software update to address this issue. Hope this helps, Mike

Ah yes Mike that’s right MBUX from day one back 2018 will only ever recognise one memory stick. It could be that you’re maxing out the read and write speeds on the memory stick. There’s 3 tasks going on there which might be a bit much for it. Sadly there’s no way to tell apart from if you experience issues like that. Trust me I’ve been there before, been filming and taking photos etc and the camera caught up with the read and write speeds of the memory card and I thought it had recorded something but it hadn’t. As I was talking to camera I didn’t notice the error message. I had to go and buy faster SD cards so there is a possibility that it could be that.

Thanks Nick, I was going to buy this features, but it seems the features stays with the vehicle and cannot be transfer to my future car, whereas a 3rd party device can. I recently had a hit a run, my car alarm did not activate to alert me when I was in the house, I was quite surprise. I did however receive the collision prompt from Mercedes ME App, but its all too late as it didn't give me the opportunity to run out to see who was responsible for the hit and run.... I have enquired about this with the Mercedes customer service and still waiting for their response. I remember with some of my previous and older/cheaper vehicles with an alarm system, car alarm would audibly sound/alert/activate, but why is my 2021 GLS does not activate the alarm??? Very surprise... I am now left in losing my NCB if I claim insurance because they are no responsible person for the collision. Could you talk about this feature and let everyone knows about this basic features that don't work with Mercedes.... certainly with the GLS Mercedes flag ship vehicle.

Oh yes absolutely all Mercedes me Digital Extras stay with the car. Oh no! Well I don’t know on cars what would trigger the alarm (in terms of the severity of a crash) it must have been very small or possible even slow that’s probably why the alarm didn’t trigger. A small bump might not do it. You’ll have to ask Mercedes when they get back to you. Do you have any security cameras at home / doorbells / do your neighbours have any? I’m guessing you know the time so you can pin point roughly when it happened.

Hi Nick, can you please help me? My dad just bought a brand-new 2023 Mercedes C Class, with NTG 7. I formatted the external SSD drive to exFAT as I saw in other videos, with my Mac before and then with a Windows PC. Once plugged into the center console, the MBUX says that automatic recording is available but then it gets stuck on "Starting recording/starting dashcam" (can't remember exactly ) We got the 360 cameras package and the AR navigation package. I really don't know what to do!

One time purchase but I kept forgetting to turn it on so bought aftermarket automatic start much better quality recording and an App for instant download/viewing at a much cheaper price. Except for me as I bought both…..

It depends what the standard specification is so you’ll need to check with them. Of the cars I’ve reviewed some have it as standard where as some can upgrade it.

Does AR on the navi comes automatically if we add the dashcam option when ordering the car ? Or is it a separate option ?

I’d double check with Mercedes directly to be 100% sure 🤓 However when I ordered my car, there was an option for Augmented Reality (in a different package). Dashcam can be purchased after you’ve taken delivery if you want that too. However I have seen some models have it built in at factory as listed in their brochures so check with Mercedes for the most up to date info 🤓

Thanks Nick for the great video, also here in Belgium there's no way to activate Automatic loop recording (I have the new facelift CLA AMG e250 PHEV). Please could you tell us more about your 3rd party dashcam ? and how we can install it safely into our Mercedes ?

No worries! I’ve just wired it into the 12v socket for now. But when I review some 3rd party dashcams I will check out the different ways you can install one (warranties / ease of installation / 12v / USB’s etc)

@@npoleary Hi Nick, I'd be interested in how you've done that. I just bought a used GLB. I hard wired my 522 in my previous car (Vauxhall Grandland), but I'm not keen on doing it with the GLB.

Usually a cable of 4m to 5m but I’ve tucked it into the panels. You can see it in my A-Class Review when I got it back after repair 🤓 But I aim to cover dashcams in the summer!

My new EQC premium plus doesn't have augmented sat nav and you can't get built in dash cam app which is pretty poor for an £81k vehicle

Just depends what you selected when you bought it (if it was from new). Some cars have increased prices for other things, like being All-Electric (due to their battery and electric motors.) I’d love to go for one by the way, maybe my next car! But of course specs change and vary over time, I do recall reading in the comments on my channel that it wasn’t available for a while due to the semiconductor shortage (thankfully that’s hopefully gone now!) If you chat to Mercedes they can let you know if it’s back again if you decide to change.
