Just wanted to say that this band has been the unchallenged favorite for my toddler. He’s only two and is very fickle about if he’ll even tolerate the Wiggles, Sesame Street, Daniel Tiger, Super Simple Songs, etc etc and gets easily bored with other “adult” music (Led Zepplin is up there but still hit or miss with him), but this band-something about it just makes him so happy, even when he’s having a tantrum. He bounces and punches the air when he’s listening to this video and has done so for about a year. So congrats, you have the approval of the world’s pickiest music critic.

You may think that he is an imitation; you may even call him a thief; but there is no denying that what spilled on that tiny desk was not only his sweat, but his soul. Someone whose heart is not deeply and wholly invested in every single moment of that song doesn't have an ice cube's chance in hell of delivering anything even approaching that level of gut-wrenching, heart-pouding, tear-jerking exposition of soul. These are facts.

to the people saying that other people can sing like him, there are other people that can sing as well, but at 10:15-11:00 he lets something out that I haven't heard anyone do before. plus, I think the songwriting is fantastic beyond just his voice.

james brown and marvin gaye does that and Otis redding..Its derived really from gospel wails. This guy is impressive but it's not necessarily unique vocal stylings. people are just not use to hearing its from a white guy. It's kind of like the black singer from bloc party. People arent use to hearing a black guy sing in that style of rock.
@revenant31388 жыл бұрын
yeah, i keep hearing that. i dont know where to look for those gospel wails, because I'd be into it if I could find them. I was listening to bloc party yesterday again, man they're fuckin' great.

So a white man can play blues on the guitar or trumpet but he isn't allowed to sing it? Soul is soul. Ain't no race attached to it. Anyone who loves music understands that. This band has got soul.
@DeadlyxElements4 жыл бұрын
@Naiym1 No one owns any type of music, keep your racist thoughts to yourself. There's been white people doing this type of stuff for a long time. Just like black people have been in other genres like metal and electronic for a long time. Music transcends all races, and all languages.
@koraybleyla3 жыл бұрын
@Naiym1 Isn’t the spirit of music exactly that it’s the same for everyone? There is no race attached to it. That’s why it’s so great. It’s the very same but so different for everyone.
@savannahsterling13762 жыл бұрын
No one is saying that. Have you ever thought that it's simply refreshing to see it come from another race...

There is no "trying to sound" like anything with a voice like THAT. That is all natural, and since he does have the ability to "go there" with his voice, why would he ever tone it down to fit into a mold of what YOU think a white guy should sound like? In other words, this is amazing...

I've never seen such a passionate, emotional performance by a vocalist from my generation. I'm an early 80's baby. Stuff like this doesn't exist anymore and it's sad. This dude genuinely was feeling every ounce of what's coming out of his mouth and whoever said he's faking it, or imitating is ignorant and is just envious of what they can never do. Music has been around since before Christ, so musicians are obviously going to be influenced by other musicians. Music wouldn't exist as a major in college if this wasn't so. Amazing performance. WOW!

I'm without words. I had never heard of St. Paul and The Broken Bones until today. My laptop randomly played this NPR set. This is amazing. Otis Redding and some of the other greats would be pleased. For those people that say there is no more great music...I say "hogwash!" You just have to know where to find it or by blessed by the KZbin randomizer. LOL

I've been telling my friends and family that for years. There's all kinds of good music, if you're willing to find it. If you just listen to the radio in the car, forget it. That's how it was when I was growing up. Radio, vinyl, 8-tracks - and finally the relative freedom of cassettes. But only real music fans played music on multiple formats. Most people weren't rocking reel-to-reels and studio speakers. There was good music, but we all knew the same good music. We all heard the same terrible music, too. We don't have to suffer bad music any more! Find what you like on the internet, it's all out there. Peace and good music to you, Isaiah Merriweather.

So, here's what I get from what the haters are saying: Take a white boy. Raise him in an area full of black culture. Raise him on Southern gospel in the church and soul music outside of church. Music which he quite evidently loves and feels to his bones. Then, when he grows to be a man and a musician, tell him he shouldn't perform in the musical idiom he's been soaking in his entire life, because cultural appropriation. I have to say...that is the stupidest fucking thing I've heard in a while. Cultural appropriation does indeed exist and happen, but I'm thinking this isn't it.
@ivanooze1537 жыл бұрын
The States are a melting pot of cultures. So, cultural appropriation is a flawed concept. I think cultural assimilation is a more appropriate term. For anyone who gets offended by cultural appropriation, just remember the old idiom "imitation is the highest form of flattery"

Our band had a lead female singer, who was white and grew up in a city where the only Methodist church was AME Zion, and was the one she attended the first 18 years of her life. She could totally deal on soul and gospel, and on some of the pop stuff, couldn't get the soul out of her sound. She was a grandma, and left the band because she wanted to spend more time being nana, while we miss her to this day, all understood she did it for the bigger love.

@perryparsons99607 жыл бұрын
Nothing I'd link, have yet to get to a studio and do a decent recording. All the stuff we've recorded live sucks dead whales, as the balance isn't right, sometimes all you hear is the vocals and lead guitar, sometimes only the kick bass and keyboards, yet everyone raves about how good we sound live.
@perryparsons99607 жыл бұрын
Utter crap. Anyone who has ears to hear can tell the man is singing from his heart, based on what he knows. Only those looking to exploit racism make it a point to constantly point it out.
