The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Maia Stern | November 1, 2021
In their Tiny Desk (home) concert, The War On Drugs gather in their packed studio in Burbank, CA to let us in on the fun and intricate inner workings of their craft. After opening the show with “I Don’t Live Here Anymore,” which shares the same title as their new album, frontman Adam Granduciel introduces the band and asks if anybody has a capo. Suddenly a very thoughtfully crafted tiny desk with drumsticks for legs (and topped with a tiny lamp too!) slowly lowers down into the space, delivering said capo. Granduciel smiles, and the group continues with three more tracks from the new record: “I Don’t Wanna Wait,” “Old Skin,” and “Change.”
Although the band’s big sound is fit to fill an arena, we’re lucky to get to hear it reverberating in this cozy setting. The War On Drugs’ fifth album, released Oct. 29, presents new songs that feel familiar and true to their sound. Originally based in Philadelphia, PA, the band’s members are now spread out across the country, but they came together to jam, demo, and ultimately record this album as a kindred unit.
The new songs are about reconnection, change, and uncertainty. This line from the title track resonates with me in the context of the daily unknown the pandemic has brought: “Time surrounds me like an ocean / My memories like waves / Is life just dying in slow motion / Or getting stronger everyday.” There’s beautiful tension and a lot of joy in these classic ballads.

How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. Tap in to our first episode at n.pr/louder-season-2.

i walked into our local vinyl shop a few years ago. On display was a record by the War On Drugs. I am hiphiop head and a music fan, picked that album up simply based on the owners advice; "You love music, you'll love this" . Took it home and dropped the needle and the first song was Under The Pressure. Havent looked back since.

I discovered TWOD during a taxi ride in the middle of a crazy work day, being late for a meeting, stuck in traffic, cars, horns, jams.. The driver was an older guy, about 70, casually tapping his finger on the wheel in the rythm of "An ocean in between the waves". I didn't even notice but I got kinda lulled into it, the noise and the stress of it all just fell back and I caught myself trying to figure out what I was listening to, so I asked him. The best discovery of a band ever. They made my day then and every time I've listened to them since.

When things were at their very worst: 2 Suns, Cross in the sky, 2 comets will collide = don`t be afraid - repent, accept Lord`s Hand of Mercy. Scientists will say it was a global illusion. Beware - Jesus will never walk in flesh again. After WW3 - rise of the “ man of peace“ from the East = Antichrist - the most powerful, popular, charismatic and influential leader of all time. Many miracles will be attributed to him. He will imitate Jesus in every conceivable way. Don`t trust „pope“ Francis = the False Prophet - will seem to rise from the dead - will unite all Christian Churches and all Religions as one. One World Religion = the seat of the Antichrist. Benedict XVI is the last true pope - will be accused of a crime of which he is totally innocent. "Arab uprising will spark global unrest - Italy will trigger fall out." "Many events, including ecological upheavals, wars, the schism in My Church on Earth, the dictatorships in each of your nations - bound as one, at its very core - will all take place at the same time." Honestly, this notion we have that a live band can sound identical to the album is just impossible, and that's from a sheer logical sense. For example; guitar recording. About 99% of bands double track guitars, meaning they record once send it to the left side, then record it again send it to the right, that produces a stereo effect. Sometimes bands even do that 4 times. Basically what I am saying is that we shouldn't expect to get the same sound as in studio, that's not what live playing is about, I mean, it kinda is but it's also about you seeing the musicians, feeling the good vibe etc. Sorry I did my master's degree on that very topic, and I just wanted to babble about it I guess

Walking to the pier a week or so ago at the end of Under The Pressure I had an ecstatic moment. The puffy clouds countering the bright blue sky, the softness of the ocean waves on either side of me and the sound. And the sound. It was a true moment of pureness, oneness and complete peacefulness. I was charged and full-filled.

he's starting to improvise the vocal delivery with different arrangements these last few years; one of my favorite approaches in live performance. I don't find it especially interesting to just try and replicate the studio album performance. Justin Vernon has this mastered, too. Love this band and their new album.

Man, this is so good and it makes me so happy. I have been a fan of The War on Drugs for a really long time, over a decade. Their album "Wagonwheel Blues" was recommended by Pitchfork years ago and that's when I got hooked. But the progression from album to album, the music becoming more dynamic... weaving in more piano, etc... it just has a very nostalgic feel to it. It pulls at your heart strings and it's clear there is a deeper understanding. It's beautiful to watch the progression, and Adam is a good modest person who deserves us as fans.
