Watch a post concert interview here:
• Jazz Night In America ...
The first time around was special, and everyone knew it. But ask any member of the former Joshua Redman Quartet - Redman on saxophones, Brad Mehldau on piano, Christian McBride on bass, Brian Blade on drums - and he'll confirm there was some magic in the air when they reconvened last fall at The Falcon in New York's Hudson Valley, breaking a 25-year hiatus.
That reunion gig, which I was fortunate enough to catch from a table up front, preceded the recording of RoundAgain - a supremely assured new studio album by this fantastic four, which now identifies as a collective (with Redman as the first among equals). Jazz Night in America and NPR Music are proud to present an hour-long concert video from the two-night run, which means you can experience that spark just as it's being rekindled.
The artists, who have all risen to the highest tier of prominence, will join me for some post-game analysis - a Q&A about the concert, the album and the deep musical bond that they've only strengthened over time. Tune in July 22 at 4 p.m. ET.

Yep, Brian Blade is always such a joy to watch (and hear). ...not taking anything away from the others... But every time Brian sits behind the kit, you get the feeling that it's the absolute best day of his life. Like a kid knowing that his momma's gonna bring home his favorite ice cream on a hot Memphis day, and he can't hold back his excitement and joy. :)

Blade is a great musician. He reminds me in a lot of ways of the great Billy Higgins - versatile, precise, self-effacing, enjoying the music immensely, & totally swinging.

I dont always prefer his way of complementing other musicians, but he seems to possibly be the number one guy for feeling as much all the time of the most number of different modern jazz players. Not sure how his overall musicianship is, dont know of his non-jazz work. The two you named are up there, but Brian is even looser sometimes then DeJohn, but I like that stuff. With Chick, though, I'd like if Blade was a BIT more like Weckl/Vinnie/Novak. With Wayne I loved the whole Rhythm section, but Wayne was so sparse I couldnt decide if I just wanted Wayne playing more, or for the band to just bend further, really accomadate his minimalism. Christian is in same ways similar to Blade, very in demand for bands that are gonna stretch, but McBride could learn to be freer like Miroslav. They supposedly got Herbie to promise to do a trio album with them at some point, if it happens it'll be great I know it.

Saw this lineup a few years ago, just phenomenal. I had the extreme luck and pleasure to play and hang out with Josh for a week back in 1986 as a member of the high school all-star band at the Monterey Jazz Festival. He was an incredible musician even at 17, I was so far out of my league in that band. Only reason I was there is I seemed to be able to play really high and loud on the trumpet so they stuck me in the lead trumpet role. At any rate, Josh is a mensch and this group is the best thing going in jazz.

There is a reason why they are the super dream team in the jazz world. Their technique and skills are of course well-known, but that's not all. Although they each have very different personalities, tendencies, and philosophies, they are open people who communicate closely through music by combining only each other's strengths. In short, McBride's personality and musical tendencies seems to be very different from Brad's. However, artistic coordination of these 'differences' is ultimately the key to 'newness'. This dream team shows it so well. One of the ethos of jazz is to continually embrace differences and to pioneer new things through them.

Once you reach the highest level of control on your instrument, it's not about whose better than who. It's who you as an individual prefer. There's no use arguing about personal preference people. If someone thinks this quartet is good as the Coltrane quartet that's absolutely fine. That's the way they see it

Both Brad and Brian have such unconventional technique and posture, characteristics that might result in a lot of criticism if they weren't such legendary and valuable parts of the scene. Truly is what got me, and yes technically these guys could play Coltrane backwards so yes If you heard both quarters live I truly stand corrected. I would say: Apples 🍎 and oranges 🍊 , my friend. Truly these cats are still alive and basically just getting to know each other and it’s fascinating to see where they can take this; already there’s a huge difference how they are getting in tune with each other at the second number, but truly just your mentioning John (who died more than 5 decades ago) shows how huge his impact still is.
