As much as I adore the Civil Wars and how tight their harmonies were, there definitely came a point where Joy's voice was so much more upfront than John's. It is so satisfying to finally hear John's music and to hear the music that was the foundation of the Civil Wars.

John Paul was the real genius behind The Civil Wars... lyracist, composer, talented enough to engage with simple melodies and a single guitar and THAT AIN'T EASY. I like this first song, but there was something about the juxtaposition of their voices that haunted me in a way i cannot fully explain. Imagine if you were singing with someone and it was beautiful but you found the creative process so difficult you just could not do it anymore-- but you still had to. Would you really want to do it? I guess i just have to 'get over it"-- Having said that, the last song-- i like the two voices together very much.

And of course, on-tune singing by people with great voices is WAAAAY too mainstream for such folk, leaving them ill-equipped to appreciate the intricate duets Joy and JP wrote for themselves.
