The wood on that rifle sure is gorgeous. I recently acquired a model 70 Featherweight Classic made in 1994 in New Haven, CT. It's a beautiful rifle, and the mechanics of it as good as anyone could ever hope to have.

The Model 70's produced by Fabrique National - Herstal of Belgium, the current owners of the Winchester name, are producing the finest Model 70s ever made. That's a bold claim, but the new rifles are the equal to the pre-1964s in every way, even superseding them in many respects. Try one, you'll be glad you did...

@@robertboreman7672 I have t model 70 Featherweight Classic made in 1994 in New Haven, CT. Yes, this was the year that Winchester finally reintroduced the controlled round feed and coned breech from the pre-64 rifles. They were able to do this thanks to the huge advances that CNC machining brought.

I'm a super Mauser 98 fan. The model 70 is one of the few Mauser designed rifles that actually improved upon the design instead of trying to reinvent it. The two lugs at the front for example, one goes all the way to the tip making it rediculous strong. The safety still stops the firing pin and not the trigger bit moves like other scope safeties. Solid design. I do wish it was 100 percent made and assembled in america however...

I have a pair of Model 70 Featherweights in 257 Roberts and 7x57 Mauser. Both have little recoil and are a pleasure at the range. Oh yeah, lethal for Whitetail also! Get yourself a Featherweight and you'll never be sorry! Stick with non-magnum calibers though; Feathetweights are a bit light to handle the heavier recoil from magnum rounds. The guns can handle it just fine, but your shoulder, not so much! LOL!

Remington and Savage want to know how they buried Winchester with push-feed rifles. Eight million Remington 700s to 600,000 pre-64 Winchesters proves it wasn't controlled-round feed or Mauser extractors that mattered to the public. It wasn't forged receivers and one-piece bolts. The Remington and Savage were cheaper to make and buy. That's what mattered.

A good action. Something not very well known is that post 64 Winchester Model 70's were consistently more accurate then the older models with control round feed. The benefit of using less machining processes is that less error is induced. Something Savage pioneered, and Remington copied as well. Not to say folks should throw down their control round feed rifles, but if you have a later model it is no less of a rifle. These being production guns there are much higher quality Model 70's out there that were reworked by individuals of the American Custom Gunmakers Guild.

I love that rifle. Wasn't sure if Winchester cut corners with it. However, more and more reviews are talking positively about it. I've been apprehensive, but I think I am going to pull the trigger and get one. If I am lucky enough to not get a lemon,it should be okay at worst. Anyhow scopes and reloading can add consistency when rifles are not extensively trued. For sub MOA, custom is the way to go anyway. Otherwise "minute of deer" may have to do when adding a classic model to one's collection. Besides, I don't yet own a model 70, and have most classic American rifle models made. For that reason alone, I will have to get one.One thing is for sure, the rifle is beautiful looking and feels very good when held in firing position. Now all I have to do is select which caliber I want it in. I hope Winchester doesn't disappoint me as other modern day American gun makers have. Bean counters have had too much influence in the production of firearms these days.

I have a ss sporter that was one of the first years they went back to the control round feed. I love the gun, but i had to play with it to make it special. I put a hs precession stock on it. I also played with the trigger to get it where I like it. The trigger might be one of its best features.

The story of the post-'64 Model 70s makes me almost hate Winchester owners, LOL. Anyone know which action serves as BY FAR the most requested/spec'd for custom target rifles? Yep....the Remington Model 700...which - oh my - is push feed. So when Remington relies on the push-feed it's a world beater...but when Winchester followed suit (so they could continue to offer their rifle to their customers in the same price range) they damn near went out of business. It's all BS. Having owned over 50 bolt action rifles in every possible configuration I can state unequivocally that the push-feed/CRF debate is a bunch of horse crap.
