Its not Wing Chun, altough its similar, the style seems to be Pugilism as in the movie, Sherlock was an expert in Bartitsu - Pugilism mixed with some Jujitsu, cane fighting and fencing.

+JohnHellscream Some of the fight scenes were based of bartitsu, many of the moves were influenced by the actor Robert Downey Jr. , who studies wing chun, and the director Guy Ritchie, who trains in Brazilian jiu jitsu. Those moves used in the scene were heavily influenced by wing chun rather than bartitsu. Bartitsu was heavily influenced by the boxing of the time and thus the counters would have been different.

At the end you said bottles break on heads. I thought that was mostly a wives tale. That mostly they don't. Specifically wine bottles tend to just crack bones. Which is right?

I like how he applies the realities in show biz. How not everything is real, but some of it is. Like in the previous episode, he addresses the reality first. Figure the bad guy isn't going to just throw down his gun and not think about picking it back up if he gets the chance, so why should you? That is, if you enjoy life and all the pleasant things it holds in store. I want all fighting styles to add a focus on how most people fight, swinging your fists because you're just letting your adrenalin surge control you instead of you controlling it, and how to block and avoid being sucked into doing the same thing so you can execute your training more thoroughly.

Nice breakdown in the video, but Louvel Delon is correct - the martial art used in Sherlock Holmes was Bartitsu, not Wing Chun/Tsun.

Bartitsu is sort-of mentioned in the books (mis-spelled as "Baritsu"), but as a mix of 19th-century Japanese jiujitsu, Savate, English boxing, and various stick-fighting methods, it doesn't look much like what Robert Downey Jr. does here.

Great breakdown. Thanks Dom. Love the show. And to the commenters...Cmon guys, use your brains before opening your mouths. No one said there was going to be anything "new" on here. Not sure where you're coming from with that. Its not called NRA, or DNA, or anything else. And no one is spitting on wing chun here. Any bit of research will tell you that despite the Sherlock Holmes one or two mentions of Bartitsu, the fight scene here was definitely based on wing chun as Robert Downey Jr is a high-level practitioner.

Take it from someone with over 20 yrs of martial arts experience several in Wing Tsun itself. The fight scene from Sherlock Holmes is not Wing Tsun (Wing Chun), it's Bartitsu at best and some form of boxing at worst. Sorry but as a martial artist, you just lost some measure of credit. I hope that this is just a case of not enough time to research but then again IMHO if this was what your martial arts guy gave you on a cursory glance, well, your martial arts guy hasn't had enough exposure to different arts, or he has only seen very very poor Wing Chun. :-(

Lol... You can't even read so I'm not concerned in the slightest bit by your accusations. You don't know me or anything about me, nor did I say that there was no Wing Chun in any of the Sherlock Holmes movies. Everyone knows Downy does Wing Chun. So go troll for arguments somewhere else. What I said still stands. First off Mr Wing Chun you come off as either an idiot or an assh@le, perhaps some mixture of both. If you want to come test my Wing Tsun, please come. First off I can only talk about the scene they broke down, and it was not Wing Chun any more than a round house kick is Kung Fu or an arm toss is Aikido. I will mention three areas where it violated some of the principals of WC/WT and if you can show me these principals I'll rescind my statement. One very simple principle is the Centerline. There was no clear portrayal of the centerline in the scenes that they broke down. Two, was the Sun punch always comes from center, this is violated in at least one of those scenes. And three, his fist structure was not even wing chun. There were many more reasons but all I can say is don't believe everything you see in the movies. Lol. Now as far as whether or not Downy practices Wing Chun, of course he does and I know that, but that doesn't mean that it made it into those scenes or that he portrayed Wing Chun principals in those scenes they broke down. I would spend more time reading your Kuen Kuit Mr. Wing Chun and less time watching movies and trying to start flame wars.

wingchun on steroids! same stright punches elbow work of bil jee form..ffff only diference is that the guy weighs 120 kilos of muscles. compared to ipman who weight was probably 55 kilos....front kick yo nothing new here not one move is new...
