I think the free-to-air radio dispatch is like the downside of railfanning in the US. In the Netherlands (and probably many other countries in Europe) one cannot listen in to what Traincontrol and drivers are exchanging over the radio. At a big station, you can listen to train drivers and conductors, but that's about it. What happens alongside the tracks, can be a huge mystery, unless you are near enough to be able to capture the radio-traffic between personnel onboard that specific train in front of you (and than they still have to say something)

so in 1 direction, you don't sound the horn until you are in the crossing?
@pkranz937
@pkranz937 8 жыл бұрын
By law, in the US, you must sound the whistle and bell at least 15 seconds, or a quarter mile, before occupying the crossing. In quiet-zone areas, engineers are required to ring the bell while occupying the crossing, and sound the horn in case of imminent danger.
@user2C47
@user2C47 8 жыл бұрын
+Pete Kranz I know that. as far as I know, they start the horn at the whistleboard.
@pkranz937
@pkranz937 8 жыл бұрын
+Alex Jamieson as I stated, time and/or distance. depends upon the speed of the train. if you're putting along at 10 mph, you'd make sure you're blowing 15 seconds before occupying the crossing. if you're on Amtrak, you're blowing as soon as you see the board.
@user2C47
@user2C47 8 жыл бұрын
Notice the whistleboard right next to the crossing, i would sound the horn before that, or is it some odd way of making a W M X
@pkranz937
@pkranz937 8 жыл бұрын
+Alex Jamieson typically, on a freight, you'd blow at the board, which is a quarter mile. crossings close together are notated by a number with the W, so you'd blow at the board and all the way through until you're over the last of the crossings indicated.

often child or person walking tracks with iPod/earphones blasting in ears, or if train is beyond crossings, approaching train is quiet unless you feel the rumble or hear engines, which you can't if you have earphones blasting in your ears and are walking ON the tracks. tragic loss.

This actually happens more often than one would think. Homeless have a tendency to camp near railroad tracks because it’s unmonitored area, a lot get hit or even pushed in front of trains. This is one reason railroad workers try to keep people away from tracks, including rail fans. Crews are never the same after these incidents and in some areas it’s almost a daily occurrence.

I know 4 or 5 BNSF drivers in the Texas Panhandle and all but one of them of them say they've had a collision with either a vehicle or a person on the right-of-way. Evidently, if you're an engineer for long enough, this is nearly inevitable; I've been told that it's like 85%. The train crews are trained just to duck their heads when they see an impending crash: that reduces the potential for being hit by flying debris and seeing the actual collision.

Any train can take a very long time to come to a complete halt, but longer trains with heavy cars take the longest. In DeKalb, IL we see a lot of coal buckets heading east filled with coal, and they weigh a lot! But they are not exactly light weight going back West after being emptied! Each car weighs many tons, just by itself! No engineer can stop a train on a dime. People need to be extra careful when crossing any tracks.

You are correct, you are not breaking any laws having a scanner or listening to the railroad. The FCC and not the FRA or DHS would get upset if you were to transmit, but again listening is okay. Amazing heavy train stopped so fast and stayed on the rails!!!

No matter the length of the train it still takes the same distance to stop them, An Amtrak train would have taken just as much if not more ( as speeds for passenger trains are generally higher ) distance as that Coal train to stop.

The point in stopping is simple. If a train fails to stop after hitting / striking a pedestrian and/or vehicle, charges may be filed against the railroad as well as the employees that were on that train. Also, it does change things a bit. Not to be grimy or create gore thoughts, but "Remains" will be in better condition for investigation if an entire freight train does not roll over them. It salvages evidence and it also helps to identify the victim.

@JgordonAmtrak1 Yea I seen the aftermath of a semi vs train accident before. Thankfully the train was going slow and the tanker the semi was hauling was empty, But it still made the semi roll over to its side! That train probably wasnt even going 10 mph. Think the truck driver had minor injuries and that was it.

I worked for the railroad for many years as an engineer and have had my share of close calls with one time I thought I killed a guy laying on the ties outside the rails. Not long ago had a friend who was on a train from San Antonio to Houston and was coming through Staford and hit and killed a guy who had joke about jumpin out in front of a train and killing himself to his mom.

You can't blame it on the guy that got hit while trespassing on railroad property. He probably didn't see that giant chunk of steel barreling along those guide thingies on the ground. He probably also didn't hear those huge roaring diesel engines or that blasting loud horn. The trespasser obviously had the right of way because he was there before the train was and the train should have stopped sooner to let this moron pass.

He must have been empty that is the fastest I have ever seen a train stop, and we have a lot of trains around here BNSF, no coal though that I know of. We have had people hit and killed on our tracks a lot as well. Recently my moms friend was killed because she jumped out in front of the train while it was moving at close to 50MPH.
@Boss302fan

It all depends on speed traveling and the weight of the train moving. However, a freight train moving at the same speed as a passenger train of the same weight will take longer to stop. Passenger train brakes are more efficient.

@nsrailfann4life91 when i was little i was allowed to go in the front of the passenger/cab cars and sit next to the engineer on a near empty express. I was so happy and grateful, but then we saw this thing on the tracks about 10 sec away. It was a person! He blared on the horn all the way down and slammed the ebrakes. As we passed by, I saw a blue beer box. We missed, but scared the s*** out of us. He called for NJTP but the drunk left.

@MacGuyDave i think that is a good SOP, but a person running across the track, the only way you know you hit him is if you didn't see him running on the otherside or you get a windshield full of pink mist. i guess all you can do is maintain speed, duck, and then see what happened. only then would you hit the brake i guess. probably about 10 cars to duck and get back up to see, 2 or 3 cars to evaluate the situation and hit brakes if needed, then another 30 to come to a complete stop. say 45 cars
