A most interesting video. Your comment about the cleanliness of the train, both exterior and the WC, applies to many trains here. Travel by train is quite expensive here. Even more so when you purchase a ticket from a machine. The OV chipcard is indeed useful. They cost €7,50. It is good to know that when you travel by train using the card you need at least €20 on the card to check in. For bus, tram and metro you need at least €4 to check in. For some express buses you need €10 to check in. We are very much behind, for example the UK (London) because we cannot pay with our bank card yet.

Well, in the u-ov busses (utrecht city) the only way you can pay is with your bank card, is that or using your ov chipkaart, they don't accept money anymore, and in some busses of Amsterdam the same happens

Can't wait to be able to go back to the Netherlands (from the UK) and ride their trains. The first class upgrade is not just for the seat comfort. During rush hour intercity lines between the major cities (for example the Amsterdam-Utrecht track) can get really busy and a first class ticket basically means you are guaranteed a seat. This is because most frequent travellers like students have transport cards that are only valid in second class. Also commuters usually only get second class fares reimbursed by their employer. I think this is a pretty good system, because it ensures that, for a price, there is always seating available if you really want it. About the ride being overpriced, as ive mentioned before, almost nobody local pays full fare. Students usually use a transportation card they can apply for and people who commute for work usually get travel expenses reimbursed. Peak hours are monday to friday 06:30-09:00 and 16:00-18:30. Most people have the 40% reduction card which automatically applies the discount when you tap-in outside these times. Travel companions can even make use of your discount card as long as they travel with you. They can load the discount at a ticket machine and it will automatically apply when they tap-in and -out. There are other discount cards available like the very cheap 65+ senior card, making it even cheaper for elderly travellers. All these discounts etc can be activated on the nationwide personal OV Chipcard valid not only in trains but in (almost) all forms of public transport. You can even link it to your bank account so it will automatically charge if needed, making the whole process very convenient and you almost never have to interact with a ticket machine. For everybody staying in the country for an extended period, its definitely worth looking in to getting an OV card and some of the available discount plans..

There are 'love seat' benches. Really bad to me is that there are no in between armrests in 2nd class !👎 also negative: between back-to-back seats (like 0:51) you could stass a big suitcase before , but that space is now slightly narrower, i heard. Last time I checked, must have been 3 to 4 year ago or so, NS said it puts its train through the washing machine every 3 days. The newest refurbished version has a new outer look and has almost the same interior as the one from the New DDZ, with minor changes to it - so has the second class USB type A plugs between the chairs to charge your phone with, provided if you have a charging cable with you. The toilets also look much cleaner and friendlier with an "inspired by nature" look on the walls and doors. It also has an automatic door. Think the newest Sprinter livery stock, but in a VIRM!

Please be advised, trains in the Netherlands never depart or arrive on platform X, Xy or XXy. Cause if it did a lot of people would die and trains would be destroyed etc. Trains do, however, depart from track X, Xy or XXy. It's better to have trains departing/arriving on tracks. It also avoids confusion because at certain stations it is: track 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 6 and 7. Track 5 does exist but has no platform. I don't know if you have ever explained in any video of yours, but the number letter combination can be very important. A train departing from track 4b generally has a different route and terminus station than a train departing from track 4a.

Almost all passengers are commuters, so not much space is needed for suitcases. I would tend to agree that the price is a little high for a commuter train trip of 25 miles. I just checked the fare on Maryland's MARC commuter trains on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor between Washington, DC and BWI Airport (a little further than 25 miles), and it's $7US one-way, vs. about $11US for what this trip cost.
@NonstopEurotrip3 жыл бұрын
It's similar prices to the Netherlands here in the UK to be honest
@alctalks14873 жыл бұрын
The difference is that train commuters here usually regularly use the train, and the NS offers plenty of subsriptions that are suited to each individual traveller. In my case, I pay 45€ a month for free train rides in the weekends and outside of peak hours, and I do this almost every day (between these two cities). I like taking the train every day, because it's efficient and reliable. Of course, a single trainride is very expensive on its own, but there are so many perks that I guess you might only know if you're Dutch. For example, I'll have a visitor from abroad, and she'll be getting 40% off just because she's travelling with me. And NS also offers combi tickets for daytrips to eg zoos and amusementparks where the bus fare is also included. Another comment described it like a metro network, you're guaranteed your journey from A to B in a quick manner without too many problems 🤔. A train that's 5 minutes late already gets the ire of the train travellers (ofc Japan and Switzerland are even more on time).

This is what an average train ride in the Netherlands look like. Grafitti on the in- and outside of the train, dirt on the outside and windows, reasonable toilets. Arriva trains have poweroutlets, are clean, but have no toilets (as of yet).

@@NonstopEurotrip I am Dutch, ride the train a lot, and NS has an 90-over on time %. During the pandemic it was adamant to keep everything clean. Now that it is over, the NS goes back to normal. Minimal maintenance (overhead costs must kept low) and only necessary cleaning now water becomes scarce (once every fortnite or month)

Cateringservices on domestic Intercitytrains were already limited and pretty bad for many years, but now they have suspended them all together. So traveling by train in the Netherlands means to buy something to eat/drink in advance. On the other hand: you can travel very frequent from early morning till late evening from/to everywhere. So let's say: no on board catering is the charme of traveling in the Netherlands. And let's face it: by far most people are less then two hours in one train so.... And a lot of train are dirty, inside and outside. That irritates me more than not be able to buy a cup of coffee.

I agree. I'd rather have a clean train than a café 👍🏻

Great video! I enjoyed it very much. When I arrived into Amsterdam on the Eurostar and left on the Thalys, I was impressed. I thought the architecture was striking from the outside. I'm glad to hear the trains are being refurbished. I've found transport in Amsterdam easy and efficient to use (Tram and Metro). Looking forward to next Fridays video :-)

No catering for public transport in the Netherlands. Only the trains going abroad may have it. Not the intercity Berlin I can say. I would say that in journeys less than two hours having catering on board isn't worth it. Kiosks and small convenience stores up and around stations are great to grab, buy and pay for something too eat and get on the train. An other great thing is the short holding. Hop on and go.

A major incentive to travel first class is the vastly increased chance of finding a seat. I've been on plenty of trains where second class was very crowded but first class had plenty of free seats. Personally I have started travelling first class for the past few months: Weekend Vrij (subscription for free travel on weekends) is €31 for second class and €37 for first, so it's a bargain. I must say I feel much more comfortable travelling in first class, and mainly due to the reassurance of always having enough space to sit.
