So just a few points as someone who's somehow familiar with Persian music. I'll try to answer as many questions as possible. Well, first of all, this is a kind of music that belongs to the inside of the geographic boundaries of Iran. So any of the descriptions like Middle Eastern music or even persian music are definitely wrong. So music is very very old in Iran, more than 5000 years old. And even though after the Islamic invasion many of the cultural heritage of the ancient Persians were destroyed, music were somehow preserved. Islam is essentially against music and considers it blasphemy, I mean Islam in its essence. So Iranian ancient musicians had to find ways to preserve such a rich heritage. For example, they hid some forms , melodies and rhythm in religious rhymes. Finally, at the end of the 19th century, around the 10% of all kinds and types of Iranian music were scripted in musical notes mainly by "Aliakbar Farahani and his children". The rest is still played in the countryside and it's passed from generations to generations. The scripted portion is divided into 7 types and around 700 melodies. If we include the non-scripted portion, we are looking at probably 5000 melodies. There are so many instruments as well as regional varieties of instruments. I know around 50 Iranian string instruments. The instruments here in this performance from the left side are tar(1200 year-old), Kamanche(1000 year-old), Santoor (3000 year-old) and the percussion instrument is called Tombak. Tar, just like guitar, is derived from Tambourine. A very very old persian/Indian instrument. The shape is just preserved from 500 years ago, but it's slightly larger. Most of these instruments are carved out of trunks of special trees and covered by skin of animals. I think it's enough for now. I'll share more next time you react to an Iranian classical song. Btw, sitting on the floor is more like a trend that classical musicians chose in mid 20th century to show their differences from pop music. It kinda indicates that it's coming from the past when modern furniture didn't exist.

When I first saw this reaction flag up on youtube as Matt reacting to a traditional Persian concert for 36 minutes, my jaw almost dropped down onto my laptop! After all anyone can set up a channel and react to any old crap for subscriptions/likes, etc. But you can only sit through a 36 minutes long performance, in an alien language and style of music if you truly understand and appreciate good music. This is why I have a lot of respect for Matt. BTW I did watch all of this reaction/video. And boy what a performance. They are all very good but boy, can that woman sing, or can that woman sing?! she can sing. Ps, I don't think this is a religious or spiritual song; more like ancient poetic love song. Maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

@@kavehnasri4115 I don't think your comment is correct. Women can sing legally in Iran. all women or mostly women groups are also ligitt in Iran. I think it's only when it comes to mixed male and female pop groups that strict rules come in to force. I don't agree with it either; but lets not exaggerate the situation. Women are allowed to sing in Iran and indeed have their own concerts/videos. And rightly so.

So nice. Thanks 🌹🌹🌹 The poems of this music are taken from the poems of the great classical poets of Iran such as Attar-e Neyshabouri, Moulana Rumi, Hafez-e Shirazi. The third part of this performance is a poem by Attar, which is taken from his book Mantiq al-Tair. In this book, Attar is like a guide who introduces the stages of mysticism and knowledge of God through the language of birds (which are the symbol of the mystic soul). In this poem, he explains the difference between the love of angels and the love of man for God, and believes that true love requires suffering and paining, while angels are painless and therefore can not experience true love.

The man playing the vertical TAR instrument (PoorNazery) is also the Tanboor master who has been performing with the Shajarians, for over a decade. TAR, in Farsi/Persian means string, thread, or fiber, such as a thread of hair, or silk-fiber, which is why most of the world's string instruments today still have the word "TAR" within their names, such as Guitar. Woven TARS, creating a web, are called TOOR (web), which may be why the table-like string-instrument (on the right) is called SanToor/Santur, which is also the mother of Piano. !!! Its a poem from Hafez a 14th century poet as one of the greatest Persian poets whose collection of works are in every Persian's home! (no exception!, This is true lol) His poems are mystical and romantic and as he was a man of God people take readings by his poem collection and its always accurate and to the point! Hi. Thank you for sharing that from my hometown. The Tar by far has the most potent sound among Iranian instruments. The word literally means a Cord and also we use it for each hair. The word Guitar is also driven from that and also the guitar itself. The other one named Kamanche is more like a Chelo not a violin. Aside from its size the main difference is that the musicians keeps the arch fixed and moves the instruments while in the chelo and violin the instrument is fixed and they play it by moving the arch. The string one named Santoor is also thought to be mother of piano. The Tombak with is the percussion one is played by ten fingers as you noticed. I'm not sure if any part has been improvised. Usually when the performance is without a singer, in with solo or duet they may improvise. When it is accompanied by a singer there is always a long introduction to convey the feeling of the music by the musicians and giving time to the singer (almost like a meditation). The themes are usually from our poets from 1200 to 800 years ago. Sometimes they perform modern songs too but very rarely. The music is divided into different positions and each song is carried out in a specific part or position. I share with you a link on KZbin from a specialist named Mohammad Khodadi who introduces the classification of our music. It is explained in Persian with English subtitles. As a person who understands music you can get a general notion of modals and may be you can contact him to explain you more. He lives in Austria and should speak German but I guess he would be able to speak in English too. Rather than that I ask you to listen and give your opinion about one of the songs of the best classical singer of Iran, Shahram Nazeri, who has received the medal of Legion de Honor for his life time work on Persian music. Talking about the tar, the white part on the handle is made from camel's bone. The transparent part is the skin of unborn sheep or goats. There are parts that are made from wild goat's horns. In past the glue used to be made of houses.

In some part of concert ( In ten minutes after beginning of video) she was singing a poem from Hafiz who was living seven Hundred years ago: Born circa. 1325 Shiraz, Muzaffarid Persia Died 1390 (aged 64-65) Shiraz, Timurid Empire (present-day Iran) ز گریه مردم چشمم نشسته در خون است ببین که در طلبت حال مردمان چون است به یاد لعل تو و چشم مست می گونت ز جام غم می لعلی که می‌خورم خون است ز مشرق سر کو آفتاب طلعت تو اگر طلوع کند طالعم همایون است حکایت لب شیرین کلام فرهاد است شکنج طره لیلی مقام مجنون است دلم بجو که قدت همچو سرو دلجوی است سخن بگو که کلامت لطیف و موزون است ز دور باده به جان راحتی رسان ساقی که رنج خاطرم از جور دور گردون است از آن دمی که ز چشمم برفت رود عزیز کنار دامن من همچو رود جیحون است چگونه شاد شود اندرون غمگینم به اختیار که از اختیار بیرون است ز بیخودی طلب یار می‌کند حافظ چو مفلسی که طلبکار گنج قارون است In this poem Hafiz is talking about his son who was passed away. Hafiz just mentioned about his son only in one verse. In the other verses the poem looks as a lover talking about his love .

Matt, first thanks for introducing the classical Iranian music to the world. I would say some of Iranian Music beauty comes from the Beauty of the Persian Language. I like your style, you do not stop the music for marketing talk. You stop for questions and explanations. I do not know how many times I have listened to this concert since it came out about two month ago. Sohraab pournaazeri sitting on right hand of the singer Ms. Sahar , he is only 37 and a genius composing musician; real hard working intellectual. There is certain amount of improvisation ; But if look closely , Sohraab conducts the group with his eye contacts and head head movements. See Moqaam See Dastgaah See Radif This music starts from Kashkar in west China's Shinjiang and goes all the way to Spain and north to Caucasus , Ukraine and Romania. In this music, there are three significant and highly respected elements. in starting order First, the musician who immerses himself in an improvised song, a song that has no notes and all that is there are degrees of love flowing in him. Second, the singer, who can't say anything about his talent and voice, but the most important thing about him is that he has a voice that, as we Persians say, is not of this world and is of a kingdom, and he is so immersed in it at the peak of the song that it is as if he is not in this world. And with his eyes closed, he surrenders himself to the heart of the song and leaves. It should be kept in mind that this music is the result of hundreds and maybe thousands of years of civilization from which it was borrowed. The third and perhaps more important than the first two elements is the poem by the famous Iranian poet "Moulana" who has a high level in mysticism and after 700 years, his mystical poems are still changing and challenging the depth of the human mind. .

Those "sections" are called "dast'gaah" in Persian, literally translated as unit. in Persian music there are 7 "dast'gaah"s, all belong to the whole "Radif". each "dast'gaah' as a unit, has its own subdivisions. biggest unit is "Shoor" for example. This piece is played in "Homayoon" unit I guess, and sometimes there are people who connect units at some moments! and that needs an expert to do that :) it might look boring that everyone has to obey the same type of music, since each unit is restricted to some subdivisions, but it is not boring tbh... everyone has his own accent in playing, and you can reorder the subdivisions as well. I can say besides the technique, it is all about the mood... how you are connecting the subdivisions, which technique you use and your accent, and also the poem and lyrics, all bring variations that make this type of music interesting, at least for me :) what do these units determine? oh...many things indeed! technically talking... each unit indicates some specific notes to be played in minor, major, quarter low, quarter high position. on the emotional side however, which is also understandable for a non-musician ear as well, each unit takes you to a certain atmosphere. So, the lyrics should also fit the emotion as well. for example, there's a unit or "dast'gaah" called "Chaahaargaah"... it brings you to an epic atmosphere, at which you can sing epic songs, with epic poems. Many songs in the Iran-Iraq war era (1980s) where made in the "Chaahaargaah" and broadcasted in Iranian radio&TV to motivate and provoke people! is it improvised? yes! almost all of it! but the main elements are written in the literature and as a document for the students to study... throughout the history, some students which where above the normal level, have established their own "style", and thus there are a few styles for "dast'gaah"s which makes them somehow unique, but all of them keep their similarities, and just re-order the subdivisions and have some distinguished accent, technique, etc. somehow. the subdivisions are called "Gooshe" btw :) So, its a long long story, but you can dig through "dast'gaah"s and hopefully you will find interesting things :)

TAR is meaning string . It belongs to Iranian music . Tar , dowtar , setar ,Barbat , Tanboor ( Tamboor) and .........are Iranian instruments . It is said that Guitar was an Iranian instrument in ancient . GUI (TAR)

Dear Matt the name of the instruments are, Tar, Kamanche, Santoor and Donback. They are very old instruments. These are Iranian classic music and usually is to do with nature, love and love one, drinking wine and being merry, most lyrics come from very famous Iranian poets.

Tar is made out of wood and is hollow inside and is covered by cow skin and has four strong and is one of the oldest institutions in Iran. Santour is also old Persian instrument, which also is made out of wood and I almost like piano , but u touch its strings with two pieces of wood which is called Mezrab.. Finally Persian music has about more than ten dastgoh , and over 120 gosh that has been around four more than a 1000 years.

Hi,that instruments name is : kaman_che or Comanche. It's violin's family. In Persian language: کمانچه "Kaman" or "caman" means: bow "Che" means : little or tiny Tiny bow or little bow

Matt, you're amazing, I can believehow patiently you listen to this traditional music. Starting from the left, The first instrument is called Taar, the one next to it is Kamanche, then the 3rd one is Santour and of course the last one is Tonbak.

There are some points to fully enjoy any kind of Eastern music specially Persian music: 1- Despite Western music which is begun very fast with singing along with music, the Eastern songs have an introduction by playing just the instruments. This may last for around 10 minutes which Western audiences may not gotten used to it. So you need to be patient to see when the singer is coming into the song after the music raises from the ground you the sky in 10 minutes. 😉 2- more important than first point is to know the meaning of lyrics the singer is expressing; if not, you will loose half of the enjoyment of the entire song. So it’s recommended to activate scripts written under your screen to be able to follow what’ the concept the singer is trying to transfer to audiences. 😅
