Thank you for your honest reaction. That instrument is "Tanboor" or "Tanbour". An ancient Persian music instrument with 3 strings. For some players it's a kind of sacred and they even make ablution before touching that.

What a deep meaning! He does not sing about the love between man and woman but about the love for God. And not the God who is taught in religion, he sings about,, ,, we Alevis call it Hak / hakikat (the truth), the divine energy that surrounds all life and matter and cannot be found outside of yourself.

This is not about earthly love, it is about one being completely dissolved in the source of all love. Many call it God. It takes years of studying Persian mysticism to understand these poems. Yet many common people just enjoy the beautiful verses which are undescribable when recited in Persian. These verses are heavenly and a native Persian speaker will be mesmerized by the beauty of the words themselves. When one desire to get close to the source of everything s/he must first get rid of his/her selfish desires and purify himself/herself to receive his (its) grace and here the poet (Rumi) is explaining the journey that how he breaks away from himself and all earthly things to become worthy of his (God's) attention. When he says "he broke his pen and left his friends"; he is referring to his fame, knowledge, and status -- that can bring about arrogance and narcissism -- as a top and famous scholar of his time, not family and friends in the sense that we understand it. He says every earthly thing will be a veil between one and God and one must get rid of them if s/he wants to enjoy the companionship of God. Wealth, fame, knowledge will cause arrogance that will prevent one from connecting to his/her beloved (God here). It is rather hard for Westerners -- who are immersed in a culture with prevalent individualism and materialism -- to make a connection with these heavenly words; but in many cultures that there are many things more important than a person's material possessions and desires and his/her own life, it can be better understood. As it is said "lost in translation"; it is very difficult to convey the essence of these words in another language, a lot of its beauty will be lost; YET one can learn from it if s/he is ready and open to receive the message.

In Persian traditional music, poetry complements the music, and the music prepares the listener's mind to understand the message of the poem. And the listener follows the poem from the beginning to the end with the beautiful voice of the singer, and in the end you will surely reach the conclusion that the poet's goal was. In Persian traditional music, singers and composers try to compose a song that the poet had in mind when composing the poem. The closer this song and its performance are to the music of the poet's mind, the more the singer and the listener enjoy the poem and the deeper the connection with the message of the poem.

This is about divine love. Rumi -- mystic --- is describing the stages of his purification until he becomes worthy of the source of all love (in his view God). Rumi -- Molana Jalal-al-Din Balkhi (Rumi) -- was a renowned scholar of his time. Having everything one seeks in earthy life, he was not satisfied and seek the truth. He then became acquainted with a Sufi called -- Shams Tabrizi -- who teaches him to drop fame, praise of others, and materialistic life and purify himself. When you hear "I was like Mercury sitting in circles to gain more knowledge and then he says that he realized knowledge alone can not guide him to his beloved, hence he broke his pen". This refers to knowledge that might bring about pride, arrogance, and narcissism that is a veil in front of one's eye to not see the divine. It is very difficult to translate these poems to another language; they sound so good and have deep meaning in Persian. The English Subtitle is an honest attempt but it is more like a literal translation that does not convey the deep meaning of this poem.

Thanks for your reaction. The instrument is called Setar which is a combination of Seh (means three) and tar (string, instrument wire). Settar means the instrument which has 3 strings (wires). This is an ancient Iranian instrument that is used in the Middle East to India with slight variation and adaptation. Indians also call it Setar; of course with their own accent. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Setar
