Guys/girls this is some of the best content I've seen you put out. Great production quality and just really entertaining and fun to watch. Love to see you do more of this in the future. The most important lesson from this video that I haven’t seen mentioned: why do you have only one racket that you are comfortable with? Kevin put himself in the hole before the first serve.
@AtobeTanhausser014 жыл бұрын
This is an interesting point. You see how many racquets the pros have, and how not every racquet is even strung to the same tension; they make tiny adjustments based on conditions. However, at least at the amateur level, I was recommended to have a #1/#2 racquet. You get feel with both, which makes the transitions much smoother if one breaks or loses tension. Also, the strings will break closer to one another.
@marcgabor96904 жыл бұрын
I always try to have two rackets set up the same and can easily switch between the two however I usually develop a preference for one over the other. It's can be pretty hard to get two rackets to feel EXACTLY the same without the support that pro players have. Especially if you are playing frequently and not switching rackets, the small differences become more and more noticeable.

Great video guys. The main thing this proves is to always have a pair of your preferred rackets instead of a few different ones. Kevin really struggled mentally just knowing he was already disadvantaged by no longer having his preferred set up with him..... Definitely led to a slow start, and I can imagine it would only be even worse if it went mid set, especially if the score was close....

Yeah. In my club here in Germany, there is a guy that plays almost the same style as Ian. And as his righ-handed backhand is much better than his forehand, he even gets more comparable to Ian. My game is very similiar to that of Kevin. To be honest, we are probably like 70% of them, but the match up of a gifted base line player (Kevin or myself) and a smart serve & volley with additional defense skills (Ian or my mate) can be very entertaining. The only difference is, that our rallies last a little longer and I get more passing shots as he is attacking more frequently. Especially indoors.

Wow I am loving this. This is a great portrayal into the mental and strategical game Tennis can be and as you get higher and better in Tennis it’s like almost a new sport. By that I mean In the beginning it’s usually about who has better strokes and more often than not it boils down to who’s more consistent. But as you get better and higher in the ladder everyone is consistent, everyone has their strokes down, and everyone more or less has the same athletic ability. That’s when you develop your weapon and when you learn to capitalize on certain points or when to let less important points go. This set up is amazing. Great insight in seeing higher level players thought and mental process. Kevin I feel for you. If I were in your shoes I would’ve given up and blamed it on the new racket and called it a day. But wow amazing seeing how you push through it even when you’re down 5-0. Can’t wait to watch what happens next.

Good instructional video, especially like both of your comments on your strategies as the set plays out. Kevin, yes, new string/racket doesn't help but you tend to hit off your back foot and pop up on both sides, even when you could hit and have momentum into the court; many examples... backhand at 12:07 forehand at 15:27 which also leads to weak shots. You're fast enough to get away with it...but not against a tough opponent like Ian, your weaker shots put you on defense. Thoughts? (I realize old video but just found it.)

I mean, it sucks, but when you realize your opponent is having an error prone day it makes sense to just put everything back and wait for them to lose the point. No extra points for winning with "pretty" or risky shots. I mean, on the internet there is I guess but not on the court. I hate when I lose to someone who barely takes a full swing but I blame myself for not being able to do more with those balls. Had Kevin settled I am sure Ian's strategy would have changed. Also, Ian's serve was pretty booming down that T. I wouldn't have gotten any of those back to him.

Why the hell would a 5.0 not have a backup racquet that is the same model as his primary? I know dozens of 3.0s who have bags full of 4+ of the same racquet and same tension. A 5.0 should know better at the very least.

@@NoRoads2AllRoads Disrespectful to your opponent, even if legit excuse. At 5.0+, all players want to beat(or lose) to their opponent at their best. Hey Ian/Kevin I've got a problem and was wondering if you have any advice. I cant win my 2nd set after winning the first against difficult opponents. An example of this would be beating a very tough opponent 6-1 and then losing 0-6 the next set. I feel as though I have already beat them and let up/ play more safe. If I try to apply pressure I usually hit long or wide by about a foot. What helped a bit the other day was changing to some positive body posture (back straight, eyes up) and also not complimenting my opponents shots. Are there any other techniques or otherwise that you think may help?

Does Ian ever play backhand topspin???? Seems like a big weakness.
@jamesbobthesecond4 жыл бұрын
Wow. You guys are so good... I am a total rookie but I am gonna permit myself to try and point out the only weaknesses I could discover. For both of you I spotted at a few occasions a lack of speed/explosiveness/reaction time ( it could be due to only one of those or 2, or even all 3 °, which I find a bit odd for players of your high level, but hey : everyone has to have his flaws I guess, or we would be all "Federers" or "Nadals"... ). 1 example for Kevin and 1 for ian : 1:09 Kevin : that ball was not so hard to reach but you kept running sideways instead of towards the ball. If you had reacted properly to the ball's lack of speed it was reachable easy enough. 5:28 Ian : VERY slow reaction to the ball touching the net, but even then, would you have exploded in a sprint of a few meters, it still would have been reachable. I don't know if you agree or not, but these were the only weak points in your gameplay I could spot...

Hi Ian! Its great to see you play. To be honest from seen your couch videos I tough u played like the pros, but to be honest to see some mistakes that i also make on your play opens a window for us your students to relate to the strategies and ideas you post. So in all it was a positive experience watching you play. I see that you have a strong forehand and a relatively weak backhand, I also have that style of play. I saw that even though sometimes you were hitting a forehand you were not hitting a spin forehand, in stead you were sometimes slicing the ball on your forehand. Why do you think that is? It also happens to me too. I play with a full western grip on my forehand and I have come to the conclusion that: when I haven't done enough footwork to arrive to ball well planted I quickly change my grip to a continental and slice the ball on my forehand. I end up sometimes opening a lot of spaces to my opponent when I do it. Let me know if you experience the same thing and if you recon some foot work would be good to hit spin balls while out of balance. Cheers, keep up the great work. Great commentary between games!!

Hey Ian, do you use any mental targeting cues to keep the ball deep on most balls, or are you instinctively hitting deep just because thats how you usually play?
@EssentialTennis6 жыл бұрын
Most definitely a subconscious thing, Diddyac. Honestly, against a "normal" Kevin or anybody else who plays like him I have absolutely no choice. Every foot of depth that I give up is a significantly better chance for him to totally take control of every point. He's a much bigger hitter than me and basically a better athlete in every way. My average rally ball doesn't challenge him much so if I can't at least keep it deep I'm in big, big trouble. -Ian

Ian that backhand slice needs lot of work... a lot of those slices, were very mooball/floaties ... even when in defense mode they need to be more agressive or have more bite if that's a word. From my observation while I have been living in the US for the past couple years, most US players don't seem to know how to slice well ... I am myself nowadays a 4.0+ player - I probably play 4x/year now if that! and my slices can still win points vs 5.0+ players even when defensive. My opinion is you use a lot of the elbow joint when cornered vs using mostly your shoulder and body weight. Also kudos on what seems to be your biggest advantage... movement. Light weight on your feet and knowing your positioning very well. Atcurrent times it's probably my worst, I get tired easily and am flat footed so much.

This was an excellent match and it shows excellent level of play for both players even though Kevin had too many unforced errors. One important suggestion would be to do the stats for the match: %1st serves, unforced/winners, net plays, Forehand/Backhand errors/winners, etc. To get another sense of what was going on and strengths and weaknesses.

Interesting with the two very different game styles. Difficult to break away from one’s A game, especially when it usually works against someone you played before. How many games would you usually stick with a game plan before changing it up? Maybe Kevin will throw in more of those softer balls occasionally, even when he has his racket back.

The short answer is because its a liability, Anthony! My backhand against Kevin's groundstrokes is a neutral rally ball at best, unless I'm hitting a short ball and coming in behind it. If I have absolutely any say in the matter I'm going to hit a forehand instead. -Ian

Ian, you have little problem with swing.. people watch 6:00min pause the swing... his racket face is way outside of body.. his shoulder rotation is not completed and racket drop is bit strange as well... it is not facing down..... rather his racket edge is point to ground... his racket take back is relatively straight one i would turn his racket handle more when it takes back so racket face will point to back fense for more rotation.... I would say that's why he seems like he is hitting only his hands and not with full body rotation... i don't know if he has ever seen his swing or not.......Keven was just missing shots but he was more dictating the point and his shots obvously penetrate more due to his better technique and better roration,,,,,,,

Have you made a hard backhand slice video...?
@MrFunkywhale6 жыл бұрын
His swing is fine, he is comfortable, controls the ball well, places it deep. Does Kevin have better technique? I would actually say no, it is a matter of preference. Ian has a shorter more compact swing and plays more defensively. Hands for control and placement, rotation and bigger swing for power. This idea of every swing should be a certain way is flawed because it does not represent intention or results. Furthermore, the more underlying problem with that forehand you pointed out was Ian's footwork. Either he was lazy, or he chose not to move as much to conserve energy for his defensive game. Look at how Kevin steps in on most of his forehands when he is attacking. Difference in tactics and intention of what he wants to do with the ball.
@flatballrule6 жыл бұрын
@@MrFunkywhale yes with that swing you can hit... any swing you can hit actually.... he doesn't have tapping the dog position.... i mean hopefully he doesn't teach his student that point the racket edge to down..... believe or not there are many players do not have face down to the ground.... to me it is due to most instructors do not have modern techniques.... if you don't have modern forehand then you can't teach... it is extremely difficult.... to create tapping dog position is not as easy as it looks unless you really know how does it happen... i put modern forehand to 2 categories.... Federer or djorkovic style which has more of loop or Nick bolleteri style which is straight back like NIshikoir , Hass or even Wawarinka, they take straight back..... I teach student nick bolleteri style because it is very simple and you can use that to even returning faster serve......also my point is Ian's forehand can get a lot better if his racket face point to back fence more....it will promote more rotation on his swing.... also when he takes racket back his hand goes away from body which reduce racket head speed.... if you really want to study swing you should compare with his swing with NIshikori take back... kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGbPZWiHrNmqiLs also take a look at djorkovic forehand at 0.32 kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHLEfGaXedxmg5I you will see exacly what i mean..... by the way there is reasons why nick bolleteri does produce many great players..... they make stroke simple but it is very much world class technique....... okay which technique hits harder?? I have to say Federer or Djorkoivc forehand probably better forehand with loop... will generate more racket head speed..... however, when i deal with so many students it is best to make stroke as a simple as possible.... one thing though... i really would not mind having nishikori's forehand. again my point is Ian's forehand can be better... it may not be wrong but it definitely can get better
@MrFunkywhale6 жыл бұрын
@@flatballrule I can agree with you that Ian does not have the technique of a "modern forehand" and i also agree it can be better like anybody else as well. However, tapping the dog position is not necessary for good forehands. Del Potro is one example. kzbin.info/www/bejne/poqZoGijaM-FnNU He has a huge forehand, but i agree it is not as common on men's tour anymore. Anyway, good luck with coaching, i have much respect for coaches!
@flatballrule6 жыл бұрын
yes i agree with that.... i have to see Ian's grip.... if he has eastern or countinental then this is correct... pete sampras had wonderful forehand and so does steffi graf and they didit n't have tapping dog.....it is a lot to do with grip... however, federer has more or less close to eastern grip and able to have wonderful modern forehand

No one is short of top 500 male players are just smashing those floaters for winners. Better players will get into the net off of them and dominate his BH from there though. The lefty is very smart with his shot selection. The other guy seems like a classic case of being overtrained and overcoached and needs to learn how to win a point by forcing the other player to make errors. I´d tell him to try to win a match by not hitting any winners and in that process he´d start to get a different feel for the game. @@EssentialTennis
