A beautiful finished item. I have restored many engineers vices over the years, but never to this standard. Unless, like yours, the tool is to be used as a display item I have never seen the need to remove casting marks, use filler to get a really smooth finish or polish any parts. It is a working tool and these usually lead a hard life and receive quite a battering over the years. I usually clean off the rust, make sure that the sliding parts are in good condition and then slap on a coat of Hammerite paint to finish. I mostly use a Record No.2 vice that I bought second-hand and restored 55 years ago and it still serves me well.

As I mention in the video, there is totally no need to do this kind of finish. But if I want to highlight the design from this era without compromising on function.. I think its a legit approach :) Thank you for your kind comment

Excellent! Subscribed 🧡 @1:47 I asked on a very popular resto channel why the restored vice jaws weren't hardened as I had expected and the answer made a lot of sense. They are kept soft so that they deform and not the work piece, so that you don't mark your work. Apparently jaws are 'consumables' as they are designed to get damaged and be replaced 🧡
@NTRprojects4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the information and your subscription. I use soft click on Jaws for this kind of stuff. Since I can't buy those specific primary Jaws anymore I can't use them as consumables :)
