Nu-Gruv Jam Session: Patch Exploration 01

Hey everyone! I'm working on a new set using my 2x 104hp Eurorack case, a ‪@rolandglobal‬ MC-101 Groovebox, a Boss RV-6 reverb pedal, and an ‪@EricaSynths‬ Zen Delay desktop delay module. This is my first exploration into figuring out how I'm going to compose the set with the first bank of sounds. The MC-101 is the controller for sequencing the modular through the Hermod. It also plays the polyphonic tones and additional drums.

So funny to see a mc101 in this kinda setup. Most the time when people have rack gear le that, I’ve mostly seen they also have some big expensive synths or rack mount synths. Cool setup for sure.

lol! I like to experiment with various compact configurations. I use 1 Track full of sequences grouped in quadrants on the pads in CLIP mode. Each quadrant is assigned to a voice in the eurorack. The Hermod acts as a liaison between the 101 midi output and the modular CV input. I play a sequence from the 101 while recording on the Hermod, and it then captures it as a loop and i stop the 101 clip right in time. It’s a really enjoyable way to play modular live.

How long have you had Hermod? Do you like it, or do you just deal with it? Was there a moment that it "clicked" with you, or did it grab you from the start? I ask because I have had mine for a couple of years and still find myself fighting with it (and I hate the tiny display). I have been considering swapping it out for an XOR Nerdseq module for quite some time now. Nice track btw. I love to hear people making this style of music in Eurorack. Well done. Nice DM sticker. That's my go to shop. Great people.

I have liked the Hermod from the beginning, about 3 years ago, but I knew going in what a pain sequencing on it is. So, I got a Akai LPK25 at first for note entry. Now, I use the MC-101 to send note data to Hermod, which just records the note input. I love the fx for each channel too. If I had to sequence solely on the Hermod, I might feel differently about it.

@@UnitE808 Same. Trent is my guy. Detroit Modular take good care of their customers. Love those guys so much. Been dealing with them for at least 5 years. I sort of use Hermod the same way, I record sequences into it from other sources, but that's not always ideal (my Korg SQ-1 has been a great companion to Hermod for me). I Also use the MPC One and Novation SL MK3, TB-303(fun!) with it, but the Korg SQ-1 is my goto. Also sequence using multiple LFOs in synced step patterns, but I really want something in my case for when I'm only working within the modular environment. I love working with trackers, so Nerdseq seems right for me. Thanks for the reply, I've been watching you for years. You are the reason I am so proficient with my TR-8s. Those tutorials are the best on KZbin, period.

@@l1fef0rm I also sequence outside the rack with the MPC X. I'm using this specific setup for doing live gigs. I want it portable and also wanted polyphonic tones, so the 101 was a no-brainer. Thank you for the kind words and years of support! I really appreciate it.

@@UnitE808 Respect. Sounds like you use the 101 like I use the SQ-1. That is the sequencer I always go back to, it's my swiss army knife. CV sequencing with it is brilliant. Its also nice when using my super old MS-20 because it lets me use hz/v (patch that into disting mk4 and it tracks perfectly). Makes patching the MS-20 with Eurorack seamless, no weird tracking issues. Do you use effects end of chain, or use send/returns from your eurorack mixer module? I know not all are capable of doing that... The addac vca quintet is really nice for effect send/returns (very deep module though, 55mm!) 👍
