It's great some of the artist talked about colonialism and how it affected us.I feel most Kenyans don't talk about it or acknowledge it yet it literally shaped our country today. We should talk about it more...

i´m german and i love african music since i discovered it back in the 70s - in the 80s and 90s we had many, many african bands and musicians here in germany and i saw countless of them live - i was never disapointed, they were all excellent musicians and brilliant performers... i have to confess, i never cared much about history and the colonisation - but some years ago i talked to a guy here in this village who had been to namibia and he told me a little about the things germans did to the herero - i became curious, because i realized, that these things are still much more evident in africa nowadays than here - i got books to read and even on tv they began to show more about these things (some days ago i just read that germany has finally taken up contact to the namibians and is making offers for apologization, don´t know the right english expressions) - but i also read about the extreme cruelties worldwide during the colonisation, the extreme blindness of heart everywhere and i feel deeply ashamed, disgusted and sad... :-( the more i´m happy to see what is going on in nairobi right now - i just discovered blinky bill a few days ago and i like his music very much - investigating from there lead me to this doku and i love it! i´m a musician myself and i always dreamed of a music scene that is as lively and cooperative as i see it here - respect due! yes, keep it up - i send love and blessings from gemany!!! 🙋♂️

If it were not for colonialism, there would be no Kenya. All these instruments and technology come from the West. I live in Kenya and never had negative vibes about Britain, apart from a few who studied at WOKE universities. All Kenyans I know, embrace who they are and build on the strength of a dual heritage. Empire did more good than bad, and that was the way of the world. We are all past it now, or should be. On my wife's side, one uncle was Mau Mau, on my side of the family I had an uncle who fought the Mau Mau, they get on great. Africa was not the first and only continent colonized, they were the last. Britain was colonized by the Romans, Spain, and Portugal by the Caliphate, and Eastern Europe by the Huns and Mongols.

I love it!! But as Taio said, if only the Nu Nairo scene can get out of West side of Nairobi and expose itself further, then I believe we'd have made super progress!

Duncan Chege Agreed! He spoke very eloquently and realistically about the music scene.

Personally Id want the Nu Nairobi scene to partner with spaces like Pawa254 and the Go Down Art center.. At least to get a larger audience and different reception to their sound
@hiribae68076 жыл бұрын
I believe what Taio said is that both sides need to stop seeing their differences and come together. Both sides have some form of discrimination against each other which needs to stop. Also it's too early to call anything so lets see how things play out.

I like what y'all are doing. Nothing but love from Chicago. Keep your music pure at heart and a reflection of the consciousness that you want to build in the minds of your people. Good music and it's vibrations can raise a man or woman into light, just as it can shroud them with darkness. Here in the states, alot our music has become corrupted because we have forgotten the faces of our father's and mother's through the same colonist/ enslavement event. But it's all good, the ressurection is a sure thing amongst the black sheep.

It's dangerous when Kenya has no unifying sound, we become a dumpster for every trending foreign sound. we lack identity
@friesiamans19663 жыл бұрын
i don´t think so - the identity will derive more or less "automatically" from this and it will be a new identity in a new time... i´m german and after that pathetic and shitty war that we lost we had a terrible problem identifying ourselves again - it took decades until we finally dared to sing in german at all - i was part of the so called "neue deutsche welle" (new german wave) that started in the late 70s, so i know what i am talking about - but by and by, as things went on, we became stronger and found our own way again and we didn´t leave out international trends and influences... i think what i see in this doku is very promising, probably more than the strict building up on traditions... since the 70s i have listened to a great variety of african music, also very much traditional music and i admit that i was shocked at first when i began to find the new stuff of today - but i kept searching for things that i liked and now i´m here and i feel really uplifted by what i saw and heard in this film - all is good... :-) forward ever (bob marley) love and greetings from germany 🙋♂️

Irresponsible sentiments here by fellow artists. All I heard was I’m too lazy to find out about my cultural heritage and it’s cool to be generic because it’s my creative choice. I didn’t study music for four years, doing papers on African folk music , and performing folk music, to be told that we have no history by someone who can’t even google to confirm. On such a big platform of all places. You people are basically saying, colonialists succeeded, without a doubt, and there’s nothing we can try. . . Vibes doe ✨ Disappointed in this kind of representation on an international platform by our local artists. Folk musicians are out here doing our best to preserve what little music practices we have left and people are out there saying the culture never existed. What a shame. Others are saying absence of culture is cool because then you get to do whatever yiu want? This only means you will do whatever you learn from elsewhere lol. I mean thats okay to do but it’s a weird thing to take pride in. This documentary made me and my ancestors sad. #nunairobi Anyway I’m hosting a seminar on folk music in Kenya in March on @currents.fm . Hope our local artists can attend:)
@friesiamans19663 жыл бұрын
wow! this is incredible to read, because i just came to the more or less opposite conclusion... i´m german and since the 70s i have been listening to a vast variety of african music (but i´m not an expert of any kind), also very much traditional music and i love that - after the appearance of king sunny adé in german tv in 1983 we were lucky to have a wave of african bands and musicians here in germany and i saw countless of them live and was never disapointed! but when i cruise the african music sites and when i read the comments (i always read many), it seems to me that very few africans know their own traditonal/folk music which i find puzzling and sad... and just from this doku i felt a little relief for the first time, because it sounded so uplifting and the artists sound so open minded and cooperative which is something that i like very much... now i read your comment and my thoughts fall down like a cardhouse in the breeze... hmmm, i hope you read what i said and i´m looking forward to your answer... love and greetings from germany 🙋♂️
