It's the theoretical physicists version of "Last Thursday-ism", the notion that the entirety of existence only started last Thursday, with all our memories also being planted at that moment.

The animation in this Kurzgesagt video was fantastic. I enjoyed its mind-blowing notions -- but maybe they are not realistic ones! The idea that the Universe did not arise from a Big Bang is kind of cool. I enjoy the notion of it being an oscillating system, for sure -- fading to near-nothing, then recreating itself, over and over.

The whole monkey typewriting example reminds me of another one that is used as an analogy to parallel or alternate universes which compares matter and energy to a deck of cards. If space is truly infinite but the number of particles and their configurations are not, then like a deck of cards, an infinite number of shuffles will eventually cause repetitions to appear due to their being a finite number of card types. So over an insane number of time and configurations, there might be a me that thinks its the only me but is one of many. The Many Worlds theory is a similar take that expands by adding choices, movements, probabilities that become impossible to calculate for every scrap of matter and energy. I will never claim to understand science at this level but its still very cool to see that what is considered absurd and illogical is based on a growing foundation of actual math, theory and eventual proof from experimental science.

The main issue I have with people using “infinity” to explain stuff is that they are referring to “true infinity” whereas our world and universe and time are infinitely vast to us but in reality are finite. So yeah if everything was *truly* infinite, then yeah of course a monkey at a typewriter could type out anything you want but in reality it’ll always be gibberish. Same concept with the floating brains, according to our understanding of the universe there is no true infinite.
@somdudewillson
@somdudewillson 10 ай бұрын
"according to our understanding of the universe there is no true infinite." This is just wrong. While the amount of time that will have passed by at any given instant _is_ finite, there's no reason, as far as I know, to believe that time itself will ever "run out". Just like how there are a finite quantity of positive integers lower than any given positive integer, but the total set of positive integers remains infinite.
@joshuab4586
@joshuab4586 10 ай бұрын
@@somdudewillson time doesn’t exist when there is no space, so during a singularity event time doesn’t exist so it is finite, and saying you can just keep counting higher doesn’t make infinite real, there’s a finite amount of everything until you go to theoretical scenarios like counting forever.

Let's not however forget about the egocentric predicament: meaning that ultimately the reality you experience is dependent entirely on your senses, which is then created inside your mind, and you therefore have no way to prove that reality is real; you can only believe it to be.

I mean we factually can’t observe everything as it is. Or as it should be and our perception of time is also inconsistent. So yes atleast in my opinion everything we observe on the day to day basis is inaccurate

Given an infinity expanding universe and an infinite amount of time then even the most unlikely non-zero probability event must happen an infinite number of times. If that means brains (or a bowl of petunias) popping into existence then so be it.

A lot of the ideas presented in kurzgesagt have been floating around for decades if not centuries. Even when I was back in high school in the mid 2000s, I would see topics like this pop up on the Discovery channel or Nat geo. I would also have plenty of intrusive thoughts about "I'm I real?" to which prompted me to go online and find plenty of people talking about things you see in kurzgesagt videos, only being discussed in edgy online forums. With a title like "You're a Dream of the Universe (According to Science)" even someone who is hobbyist level into science stuff would guess where the video would go based off such a title. I'm not even a STEM guy, so if I could see it, it doesn't surprise me in the least that an Engineer can also preemptively know how the video will go since the concept isn't new or anything...

Not that hard of a problem to calculate. Assuming we give the monkey a typewriter with the 26 letters of the alphabet used in english, period, excalamtion point, interrogation point, apostrophe, dash, comma, semicolon, space and next-line, we end up at 35 characters. So probability of a sequence of characters the length of eminem's works being true is 35 to the power of *minus* [whatever that number is]. Take the inverse, multiply that by the time it takes for the monkey to write a sequence of that length and here you have your estimate.

Actually (and I swear I'm not being sarcastic), reaction videos that are just rolling your eyes at professionals mentioning their professions could be pretty funny! Like, ugh, Dr. Mike is talking about health AGAIN! There goes Ann Reardon with her dessert recipes... 🙄 If you decide to start a channel like this, please let me know.
