Amusingly enough this is actually a thing and only serves to further confuse the issue. See once upon a time ( see the 60's through 80's) you could buy plug in negative ion sources, which did produce actual negative ions. They were marketed as a health product that "cleansed the air" and actually did what they claimed. Sorta. These things contained transformers and capacitors arranged to step up voltage to high voltage ranges, and would thus ionise the air. No radioactive sources required. Now ionizing the air is great for encouraging the particulate in smoke to settle on a charges surface, so they would in fact cleanse the air, when people were still smoking indoors. Infact bigger industrial versions are still used in power plants (the combustion type ones anyway) So why did ghey go away? Two reasons: people smoked cigarettes faster than particulate would settle, and they were also great at turning your electronics into awkwardly shaped paperweights. They also would become covered in unsightly stains quickly. The stains being the smoke particles that they were successfully removing from the air.

The best way that I'm understanding the difference between alpha, beta, and gamma particles is in terms of bullet types. Alpha particals are like hollow points, they lack penetrating power but will do some sersious damage. Beta particles are like regular bullets, they have decent penetrating power and will do a bit of damage. Gamma particles are like armor piericing bullets, they have a lot of penetrating power, but because they penetrate so well, they dont do a ton of damage as they go straight through.

I know the term "wet water". It is used by people in modeling Miniature Terrain eg. Dioramas. Wet Water is basically regular water with few drops of dish detergent added. The Soap breaks the surface tension, allowing the water to penetrate materials used in modeling more easily, such as gypsum, garden soil, wood etc. Often it is mixed with PVA Glue, allowing the glue to form a stronger bond due to deeper penetration into the materials. The more you know 😊

Making water more "wet" is very common for your clothes washer, that is what they say is the purpose of the washing detergent. Since water is a great substance to dissolve dirt and other things into, making it more "wet" so it can flow easier through garments and carry more dirt is beneficial. Which by wetness is supposed to break the water's surface tension... Of course there are other things in the washing detergent as well as enzymes, perfume and the like, but the wetting agent is probably the most important one.
@unnamellie Жыл бұрын
"Wetting agent" is something that improves the liquidity of the water, makes hydrogen bonds between molecules easier to break, and, in return, the water becomes more liquid, getting in between of the threads, or something, I'm not a water scientist. I mean, you can say it's more "wet" too, because more water molecules will stay on your skin with that agent
@daboss640 Жыл бұрын
@@unnamellie They're also called surfactants, and they actually work by essentially adding compounds that both attract and repel water molecules. This causes the water molecules to want to separate which results in a lower surface tension. Also it's actually the opposite, less water molecules should cling to you if you use a wetting agent due to the lower surface tension.

On the plus side, usually if these sorts of things contain these materials, they actually _want_ you to know and will heavily advertise them as being "negative ion" or "ion generating", or "energy producing", etc. Thorium powder isn't _that_ expensive, but it's still more expensive than just not including it at all, so if they're going to spend the money and manufacturing effort to include it, they're probably gonna make sure to hype its effects (as a selling point). So I wouldn't worry too much about buying some random bit of cheap jewelry (which was not touted for its health benefits) and discovering it's actually radioactive. That's probably pretty unlikely...
@moodfm5673 Жыл бұрын
if its just a random decorative ring why would people be wasting money putting thorium in it though? instead of buying a geigercounter maybe just use that money and save up a little more money and buy some silver or gold rings or bracelets from a local shop. no point in wearing something so cheap that your worried it might be highly radioactive.

For the record, as someone who's not an electrician but deals with electrical projects as a hobby (so there's a larger chance that I'm wrong than if an actual electrician were to speak up): Sticking a fork in an outlet shouldn't give you all that many "negative ions", because home outlets are connected to AC circuits, which means ~60x per second you gain a few ions, and then immediately lose them again, as they're being pushed and pulled rather than just being shot into you as a constant stream.

The placebos don't bother me so much because... Well, they're placebos. The placebo effect, though caused by nothing, means that there is a real effect taking place. Is it necessarily doing everything purported by the maker? No, probably not. But there's likely _some_ benefit, even if it's caused by nothing. So really the problem here is the hazardous materials and the idea of people spending way more than they should on what's effectively make-believe. Any time the placebo effect is brought up I feel the need to mention the nocebo effect as well, where nothing is there to physically cause a reaction, but the belief in such has caused a reaction anyway. Nocebo describes a negative reaction while placebo describes a positive reaction. Things like people getting actual headaches and nausea from wind farms and 5g, that kind of thing. Do wind farms and 5g cause nausea and headaches? No, but a person's belief that they should can do that.

I was taught that: Water predominantly exists as ions. It's a polar molecule. It also likes to partially separate into ions in an electrical field hodge podge. The O has 2H on average, but at any one time to the next it might not be the same H atoms. It's a bit like an orgy. All of this starts as soon as you introduce an ionic tending impurity, like almost any salt. Almost immediately the water around such impurity will diassociate into ions of H and O and get all polygamistic with it's partners. Importantly when this occurs the electrical conductivity of water goes from nearly zero to being significant for your safety.

This is the second description I've heard of the photo multiplier tube on here that is incorrect. The photons stop at the detection screen (behind the scintillator). This knocks an electron free from the screen that heads toward an electrode called a "dynode", of which there are several in cascade. The dynodes are progressively more and more positive as the electrons encounter them. Each time an electron strikes a dynode, secondary emission takes place (the incoming electron knocks another electron off the dynode itself) which gets directed toward the next dynode. This process repeats until the now "shower" of electrons finally hits the anode, where it then generates the signal the external circuitry uses. No photons are actually in play within the tube itself; they are destroyed at the sample window screen.

On the two inch pancake detectors like the one shown in the video, they can detect alpha particles because the window is made with Mica. This is a natural mineral that can be split into very thin sheets and is transparent to alpha particles. There are some other materials which can also be used, but without the right choice of material, the Geiger-Mueller tube will be unable to detect alpha particles.

Water more wet, or wetter.... Is literally what soap does, breaks the surface tension.

It's worth considering that a lot of people regularly exfoliate the layer of dead skin off to try and get softer skin, which I imagine could be the difference between alpha particles penetrating to dividing cells and not penetrating to dividing cells. I've always wondered if there have been any studies/experiments on this, because that could impact regulations for people who work in industries that expose them to ionizing radiation.

We know some of the products just stopped adding thorium, so it's _possible_ the ones you saw are just frauds, instead of dangerous frauds. You'd have to get one and check with a geiger counter to be sure. (Not defending them, it's illegal either way, but knowing _which_ crime they're committing is important for reporting them.)
@agentvx8320 Жыл бұрын
I gather that the reason (or at least a major contributing factor) is that large amounts of thorium are produced as byproducts of rare earth metal refining, and there aren't a whole lot of good uses for it unless someone starts building thorium fuel cycle power reactors.

Yeah Alpha(α) has a bit of trouble surviving a collision with mere paper. Beta(β) is a Lil tougher but, Gamma(γ) & X-Ray(χ) tear through most materials.
@Rusty-METAL-J Жыл бұрын
Yeah wood definitely trumps Alpha(α) particles because the molecules are arranged where nature makes them a million or more times denser, than we leave them when we make it paper.

30:18 unfortunately in the UK thorium creams were being sold in those health shops a few years back...what's worse, it was being marketed as a cure to skin cancer.... On the plus side, a know a few people that got some cheap check sources for their detectors...

"Scalar energy" products are the new name for these thorium dioxide trinkets

I don't think I've ever actually had a single doctor explain to me exactly why getting an x-ray/being exposed to radiation when you're pregnant is a bad thing, so thank you for touching on that bcs yeah I already knew radiation + fast dividing cells = A Problem but like, I'd never put the pieces together. And I know tons of afab people who have no idea why doctors hound them about testing/signing waivers and stuff, they just think it's cuz it's "dangerous" which it is but like, the doctors never EXPLAIN the real danger. I think if someone actually explained why it's so dangerous then more people would be more comfortable with the process. This is def information I'm going to hold on to.

Ah thorium dioxide, as a welder i am very familiar with this. Getting to melt metals together using a thorium doped tubgsten electrode that gets ground to a point is fun when you know what thorium is. I legit cant even use the thorium electrodes without at least a p2 respirator mask on because im not too keen on inhaling any more thorium dust from sharpening the electrodes or from any fumes from the vaporising electrode tip while welding. Sure the hazard may be low given 1-2% is a tiny amount, but still the risk factor of inhaling thorium fumes or dust and having my lungs irradiated doesnt sound like a fun game to play

It's probably not what these weirdos mean, but when artists talk about making their water more wet, it means adding something that reduces surface tension. Important for airbrushing, paint washes, etc.

In South Korea, the 'neagtive ion' marketing is banned, after the radon detection from monizite-coated mattresses in 2018.

LinusTechTips made a video about something similar with anti-static bracelets with that ElectroBoom guy. I think they have thorium as well.

The one that ElectroBoom was wearing in that video looks oddly like Power Ionics Prism 2000 wrist band you get from AliExpress.
