I do this plastic on my windows in the winter to help keep the trailer warmer. And I put a double layer of tape on the corner of the plastic and put a staple in each corner to help hold the plastic and the tape in place lifted longer.
@Psalm2710_2 жыл бұрын
Well, I did this to my basement so I could be ready and a few days later I went down there to find a huge air bubble in the plastic that was pulling it away from the taped wall. Unfortunately, there are small gaps that let air in so this didn't work out for me. I had better luck using painter's tape to seal the cracks. I also used the plastic on our double doors down there and got the same problem, the tape fixed the problem for now till I can fix the gaps.

If you are far enough away that your house is still standing, you will have 30 minutes to a few hours depending on winds to seal things up. Watch the old 50's instructional videos so you can place the sandbags on the floor above your basement to create layers of soil/mass for more protection in your basement. Sandbag windows as well, get a few feet of matter to absorb external radiation from outside. I saw one recommendation of about 3 ft of soil.

The earth/concrete/steel/lead in a bunker is usually to protect from gamma radiation, the plastic on the windows is to prevent fallout dust from entering the home. You want to keep away from it, and do everything possible to limit exposure and ingestion of radioactive dust. That said, the half life is short and after 24 hours has lost about 80% of it's radioactivity, after a few weeks so much more. The problem will be ongoing though as there will be radioactive dust outside for weeks, months, years to contend with. The longer the time from initial fallout, the less the risk. Great detail is provided in "Nuclear War Survival Skills" by Cresson Kearny- considered by many to be the bible of nuclear survival.

However, unless you are on the edges of the fallout plume (yellow zone in nukemap) you will have serious risk of illness or death due to the low protection factor of a wood frame house (2 to 5) or even the basement of a wood frame house (10). If there is no deep highrise building or subbasement nearby to shelter in, you will need to create a sandbag/dense object lean-to shelter in your basement or a sandbag/dense object fort in the center of your home. Also if your home is too close to a target, the blast will blow out your windows and plastic with it. Don't take my word for it, see the Nuclear War Survival Skills handbook, which is the definitive, guide to surviving Nuclear War published by the Oakridge National Laboratory, also read chapter 9 of The Effects of Nuclear Weapons published by the US DoD.

This will all take time. Do you think we will have warning? How far away from the blast do you think people will need to do this? How long does fallout take to travel?
@WaxPaper2 жыл бұрын
If you're close enough to see the blast, you can still survive. There are a lot of nuclear survival guides that cover the questions you asked, but it usually comes down to knowing a few steps you have to take immediately following a nuclear explosion. Filling as many containers as you can with water, taping up the windows, etc.. Then retreating to the best space in your house to ride out the radiation. Two days is the most important. Two weeks is ideal, but you gotta stay holed up for at least 48 hours, even if you have no food and water. After 48 hours you can leave your shelter for brief periods to get water and food, but check out the guides and books on the subject for accurate info. A lot of it is free and online in pdfs. As for whether you'll have time... If the blast is close enough to see the mushroom cloud, you may only have minutes. That means some of this stuff won't be feasible. But the fallout does take time to move with the winds. I think it's something like 100 miles would take a couple hours, usually. Getting inside is the most important thing. Then putting as much mass as you can in-between you and the outside. For people with basements, that usually means getting in the basement and piling as much stuff around you as possible, including overhead. The radiation isn't just line-of-sight. It scatters and bounces off atoms in the air, meaning that being in a literal hole isn't enough, unless it's covered.

@@DSkye-n7m I agree, every inch of material is better than nothing. And if you don't have radiation pills, these guides talk about how you can apply about 2ml of iodine solution to your skin each day to get some prophylaxis. Don't drink it, though. Saw that on an episode of Jericho once and always thought it was legit, but apparently you can't do that. Gotta let it absorb through your skin. Two mils is a lot, too. It's like a teaspoon or more. But a big bottle of iodine could keep your family from getting thyroid cancer. It's worth reading about.

@@DSkye-n7m Yes mattresses, sofa cushions, everything and anything with density. Stay in there they reckon 2 weeks and not to move out of your shelter for that time. Put a massive mattress up against the wall crawl in and use this as your shelter with cushion on top, quilts etc.

Like someone else mentioned, if you’re less than 200 miles of ‘a strike’, you’re screwed.. The initial blast shockwave renders all that inconsequential. No amount of “tape” is going to mitigate the pressure (think Blast Doors). Not to mention the heat.. Seek subterranean shelter and THEN perform these steps. Further, there’s ONLY a few places in the US where you’re NOT in that 200 mile radius of a potential target. But hey, just know IF this ever happens, the next War we’ll be fighting with sticks and stones.
@TM-5292 жыл бұрын
You're screwed anywhere, nuclear WAR is not just ONE bomb but THOUSANDS of them. The radioactive fallout will contaminate the entire WORLD water/food supply for THOUSANDS of years. Unless you have an unlimited source of uncontaminated food/water you're screwed. As soon as you eat/breath in anything containing a radio active particle, it will remain in your body (thyroids/organs/bones) for decades, irradiating 24/7/365 your cells and breaking down the ADN. There is not such thing as prepping for a nuclear war, other than calling your congressman and ask for DEESCALATION.

Open Letter to Survival Existence I could not find your email in your about section, so I am reaching out via comments. First of all, you have great info in the areas of generators, chainsaws, and several other topics. However, your Nuclear Fallout Seal Up Your Home, shows that you have addressed this vital topic without conducting proper research from authoritative sources; such as the Nuclear War Survival Skills handbook, published by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, The Effects of Nuclear Weapons, published by the US Department of Defense, and The Civil Defense Journal, published by The American Civil Defense Association; just to name a few. I assume you sourced this information from another prepper, whom you respect, and made this video from the best of intentions, feeling that you are sharing life-saving information. However, as someone who produces survival information on KZbin, in my case solely on nuclear war, I believe that all of us who publish preparedness information have a fiduciary responsibility to ensure that our information is as accurate as possible as people’s lives are on the line when, God-forbid, the need to use the information we have provided. In your case, you have almost 5,000 subscribers who trust you to provide them with accurate, life-critical information. This video has had more than 84,000 views, which potentially expands the number of people who will depend, and even act on, this information, into the tens of thousands. As I said, I respect your other work and believe you had the best of intentions in producing this video. I only wanted to point out that your video contains erroneous assumptions and leaves out all-important information on protecting against gamma rays. Research conducted (see the Nuclear War Survival Guide) indicates that the threat from fallout infiltrating the shelter is minor compared to the risk of poor ventilation. The initial, most dangerous fallout particles are heavy and large. The threat from them is not infiltration, but the gamma radiation, which requires significant protection factor (material thickness and density) to block. The lighter fallout particles, which could potentially infiltrate into your home, will not come down for days or even weeks later; so by then the emitted radiation will be considerably weaker. If you are interested in doing a new video on the subject of home fallout protection, I would be happy to point you to the authoritative sources of information on the subject you can reach out to me via my channel as I have my email in the about section. Thanks

A car cover would be seriously worthwhile. I guess I'm.adding that to my preps. Sigh. Mind you I don't think it will be in vain. I've been prepping for other scenarios. Namely grid/net down social unrest price hikes and supply chain bottlenecks. It's now an added realisation that nuclear fallout will be a thing. Sorry but I feel its pretty much a certainly. I live I uk 100 miles from London.

Most single story homes aren't safe for a radioactive fallout incident. The issue is how close you are as the particles build up on the ground and on your roof. The only particles are are deadly are only that way for a very short period of time, about 24 hours. And it is only the heaviest of these particles are are dangerous, so if you are within a 1/2 hour of ground zero you may receive some of these as fallout. So it is these particles that are the most dangerous. The denser a particle the more radio activity it can carry. But that also means the faster they will fall out of the nuclear cloud. The dust isn't a threat since it has almost no density it won't retain it's radio activity for more than a few hours at the most. So the best information regarding protection from the radio activity of nuclear fallout is in the form of Distance. The farther away from those particles you can be the better. But the minimum distance you need for safety is 10 feet. Some places of concern are roofs that too flat to shed the particles as they fall. Also roof gutters can act as catchments. Then there is the ground outside your walls. As the particles build up on the ground like snow they can irradiate you right through those walls. So You best bet is if you have a basement. You can pack books or other materials as dense as you can into any underground windows etc... Stay away from cellar doors is they may also build up the particles. But if you live in a single story residence, seek shelter at the nearest multi story building. Even elevated parking garages will work because these heavy particles will fall straight down. Getting to the innermost part of any building will help and you only need to stay in place for 48 hours. Because the half life of even the heaviest particles dissipates on 24 hours to normal amounts of background radiation. But if possible staying in place for a week or more wouldn't hurt. So any sort of building that is 3 or more stories high will be your best protection. By getting to the middle of the building so there is plenty of room above, to the sides and below. If you are caught outside as the fallout begins, get inside as fast as you can and then take a shower to wash off any particle dispose of your clothing outside.

This is the question..especially if you choose to have only a room or two to stay in..The fallout particles are sand like so I wondered if a voile like material doubled taped over a partially open window would work..Don't know if it's a feasible idea..🤷♀️
