In Olkiluoto, Finland, construction of the world's most advanced nuclear power plant is facing challenges. First, problems with the concrete occur due to a cold snap, requiring water to be added to maintain flowability, which poses a safety risk. The special concrete requirements for nuclear power plants are strict to avoid dangerous cracks. After the inspection, work rested for two months. Fortunately, the wrong mix did not affect stability. Construction of the nuclear power plant resumes.
A German engineer, Gabriel Malki, is dedicated to creating a sophisticated safety concept for the nuclear reactor. The plant is expected to produce 1,600 megawatts, making it the most powerful nuclear power plant in the world. Safety features, including a double shell of steel and concrete, are designed to protect against threats to the nuclear plant, even a possible impact from an aircraft.
Despite efforts to ensure safety, the nuclear power industry still faces numerous potential disruptions, as the Fukushima incident demonstrated. The need for electricity drives ongoing work at the power plant.
