I used to work on the base when it was an airbase back in 1988, and now i still work there now at the UKs most secure Data Center. A very cool site with lots of history.

That's iron deposits in the water. Gives it a rusty hue. Mineralised, certainly, but I wouldn't of thought that was from nuclear waste.

The white metal posts with hthe flanges on are probably for small cranes. The grey metal box tipped over is an ONAN transformer, oil cooled. Probably 11kv down to 240, 3 phase. The other metal will be the ring switch. I'd love to without guys to share my electrical knowledge on stuff as you go around. Love it.

Plenum room deals with and process air quality. Or in the bunkers case it was a filtration system for back venting.

Google earth 2003 image gives you the best clue to the base ball pitch. Score board in correct position facing the Player you can see the imprint on grass. Looks like the stand has been relocated there was a row of those stands backing onto the road you can see on the grass where they were stood and you get a view of score board . Makes sense as the layout forms a triangle.

Spent a lot of time exploring round the base 25 years ago.. have a piece of the old runway at home. There used to be an old aircraft hanger that was massive but isnt there anymore. Hated to see it torn up.. would rather it was kept as an airbase.
@IKS-Exploration2 күн бұрын
Yeah looks worse now than it would have if the base was still there sad times

Have you heard about the Holpton Pill box on the east coast is getting closer to toppling due to coastal erosion?

The Aircraft crash left the bomb split open causing components to end up on the runway. There was a TV documentary some years back covered the incident and although cleaned up at the time years later a radiation image taken from a fly over showed a large radiation splash shadow. This was about a third the way along the runway. Any ruminants were completed removed when the runway was torn up.
