Your channel is gem and provides a diverse level of information. I was in the RAF for 17 years but chose to retire in 1998 spending most of my time in Germany and North Scotland flying Tornado. Congratulations to you both on completing the Tab for Scotty’s little soldiers. I enjoy your channel, got tuned into it because your regiment PWRR was the surviving descended regiment from my father’s regiment the MIDDLESEX. My father left as a Captain just before being disbanded and combined with the Queens in 1966. I remember when I was a boy in North London, my father would frequently bump into his ex Die Hard colleagues. They were all a fine bunch of decent men to say the least and I was always impressed with how even the 2 year national servicemen were so proud of being in the MIDDLESEX. All the best to you both from John McC Oregon USA.

Hey John, what a great message, thank you. Ive never chatted with an ex Tornado Driver before! Yes, the Die Hards, I remember learning bits and pieces about the Middlesex Regt when I joined the Queens Regt. Thank you for your kind words regarding our recent challenge for Scotty's, was a little tougher than we initially thought, but we got there. Hopefully my spoof RAF character, "Sqn Ldr 'Hoppy' Hopkins, and his exploits, wasn't too upsetting for you to watch? Apologies now if it did. All the very best to out there in the US. Yes I read that you were not given the Veteran Badge. How about we start a petition for recognition of the service given by the ROC?
@bugler75Ай бұрын
I never knew that. Yes, there should be some form of official recognition, at least a lapel badge. Anyone who was prepared to fulfil this rôle for the best of the country and not knowing what would happen to their friends and family had a special type of bravery. There was an Ob Post near me as a child, between Bangor and Groomsport, Co Down. Placed beside an old WW2 AA position on top of a small Rocky hill, my friends and I regularly played (Guns of Navarone style!) there. Of course we all tried to speak like David Niven😁 Definitely worthy of official individual recognition 👍🏼
@Bilbo107Ай бұрын
Thanks Sgt Major. I haven't used my account for years. I wrote to the veteran agency in 2011 re the lapel badge, but was told, as it was a civilian organisation, we weren't allowed one. My MP tried for me, but they said that it would dilute the Armed forces actions if we had one issued. It feels like we never existed, and there are less of us each year. I am 62 and a younger member of the Corps. Watch Sound an Alarm here on KZbin, for a rather dated, but informative film of our duties. Great to hear you speak of us. I got a bit of a lump in my throat, 😊 Cheers. @@LetsTab59-bd4fd

Great achievement raising awareness and money for such a fantastic cause, I must admit I had not heard of it until you mentioned it. The ROC indeed did a great job having little technical assistance other than the ‘eyeball MK1’ Continuing from aircraft recognition to NBC reporting in the Cold War. BTW I remember in the mid 80’s we were issued at company level a horrible device to detect NBC emissions, I was lucky and only got lumbered with it once (thank god) cannot remember its name, but it was like a small filling cabinet size and weight a ton ! You set it out away from your trenches / position and ran a wire back to your command post. It had a detection alarm which was unreliable and was so loud you could hear it miles away (so could the opposition) and someone had to go out and reset the device - frequently. I thought ‘Blot-Bang-Rub’ was something you did after a bad curry until I joined the army !

During my time as youngster in the ROC, before joining the R AUX A F we used to visit RAF Neaterhead ,and they said the problem with early radar systems is they that used to pick up a lot of ground clutter from the local terrain. The Royal Observer Corps was highly respected that the RAF rapier Regiment asked if ROC members would like to come along for their expertise in aircraft recognition during a major U.K. exercise in the 1980s Even though ROC primary role was the nuclear reporting role, still kept their aircraft recognition training up to high standard on a individual basis. When the ROC was disbanded, many joined the ( RNXS)Royal Naval Auxiliary Service, which itself was disbanded a year later.

Scary stuff back in the day & sitting under the kitchen table was about all the advice you got! As a PC in rural Devon c1984 our nick had several basement rooms kitted out as an emergency command & control centre for local government to function from in the event of nuclear war. There was also a permanently connected phone in a very small room within the Sgt’s Office that emitted a constant beeping tone to indicate the line was working properly. If you picked up the receiver all you heard was the speaking clock. There was no dialling function but if you heard it. ring 💩 😱 you were supposed to answer it immediately. You would then find yourself speaking to the Duty Comms Room Inspector in Exeter either carrying out a verbal line check or telling you that WW3 had started. Even the Sgts didn’t like answering it! 😂 💥‼️
