Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer says the UK’s nuclear deterrent is the “bedrock” of his plan to keep Britain safe.
If elected, Labour said it will use defence procurement to strengthen UK security and economic growth.
The party hopes to direct British defence investment to British business first, with a higher bar set for any decisions to buy abroad.
In an interview with the i newspaper, Sir Keir confirmed his ambition was to boost the defence budget to 2.5% of GDP, if it fits with Labour’s fiscal rules.
During a visit to Barrow, where nuclear submarines are being built, Sir Keir is expected to focus on increasing jobs and skills in defence.

The trouble with any political party pledges is that the leader can be replaced at any time and then a new leader can change the direction of policy and cancel any previously made pledges.

The first task of every new Prime Minister is to write clear instructions for the Vanguard nuclear sub crews regarding what their response should be in case of nuclear attack. These instructions are kept locked in a small box aboard the vessels and remain secret indefinitely. It would be incredibly interesting to know what PMs have written in there. How many have called for retaliation, and how many have restrained the response in an effort to preserve life on this planet?

Stability of labour doing an immediate 180 on a 50 year defence strategy. You can’t just say complete nuclear abandonment to yes we need nukes. Defence contracts can’t be this unstable. Nuclear subs and ICBMs can’t scrap and then decide you want them with the next guy. Luckily Kier is fairly moderate and could return labour to not being extreme, but who is managing continuity within the party its a 180. Not to mention it’s daft anyway cause the nuclear defence spending is required for NATO and bound by tons of treaties, contracts, obligations as well as needed, there’s a nasty war in Europe that’s threatened nuclear exchange.

@legendofthepeach

@@jasonchamberlain1405 well all politics back then was fairly central. But I think Corbyn’s approach of scrap all defence, prosecute those serving, cap all earnings to a £100k max, tax people for having a garden, no borders or controls on migration, free education and tax payers wipe out any student debts already accrued. Increase national debt. So anything after that is going to seem fairly moderate.
