Now Europeans, especially Germany, has to buy expensive American liquid fracking gas instead of cheap Russian gas via Nordstream II. And the Selensky-Kolomojskyj-Connection also reached the goal to destroy the diplomatic and also business connections between the West and Russia for a decade. _Disclaimer: I'm not a Putin-fanboy and don't encourage the Russian military action against the Ukraine. 1.) Low tech means less prone to cyber attacks, viruses, skynet etc. 2.) Military electronics are designed to work reliably for decades and to do just their task. So - floppy disks are no prob to me. Many still used air defense systems still use vacuum tubes - these are EMP-proof 3.) Fuel explosion cannot trigger nuclear warhead to detonate. Nuclear ignition is very precise process - you have to detonate TATB explosive lenses AT ONCE to compress plutonium core into supercritical mass. This requires exact timing and lot of technology. Some missile silo accident can't do that. By the way, modern (i mean "developed after WW1") explosives - if thrown into fire - will just burn to ashes. For detonation you need blasting cap which produces explosive impulse. Fire is insufficient.

@empath696 жыл бұрын
Good point, Boris - mind you, the accident noted resulted in an airman losing his life in the fire... Of course, on the other hand - the whole "socket beats nuclear missile" is a little misleading - to be fair, the socket in question weighed NINE POUNDS, and had seventy feet of free-fall to pick up kinetic energy before it struck the sidewall of the missile's first stage, piercing it and breaching the fuel cell, releasing hypergolic fuel (that later ignited and caused the fire).
@george29916 жыл бұрын
Yes but you at least should be able to develop something better. Something accounting for all the benefits that you pointed out (reliability, not prone to EMP attacks, etc.) and does things better. We pass bills that let us keep nuclear warheads, even though they are literally of no use in these quantities. Sure, keep like 10 if you absolutely positively have to feel like you could pulverize your enemies if you wanted to, but 4800 is just so damn many, it doesn't make any sense. Meanwhile, bills that enable donations of food that would otherwise be thrown in the garbage are completely rewritten to the point that they have nothing to do with food donations anymore. Restrictions and removal of lead in households is being pushed aside. We complain that we don't have the money to change anything, yet we spend ridiculous sums of money on shit we don't actually need. So many things that seem so blatantly obvious, yet for some reason, the people who have the power to change them seem to be completely oblivious to them.

There is no one on any youtube, or any other, comment section that knows more than 1% of what being a leader of these countries entails. There are probably innumerable different issues about things we have no idea about that happen every day. There could be hundreds of terrorist threats stopped every week that don't get media attention to avoid scaring the shit out of everyone. Look at what happens when one person gets shot in some made up racial issue. Imagine what would happen if there were this many terrorist threats and people knew about them all. Duck and cover is a legitimate survival tactic. I hate when people make fun of it. There are several zones of destruction when a nuke goes off. The largest by far, the outermost zone, experiences a shockwave and varying degrees of infrared radiation. The shockwave is dangerous because it sends objects (note:glass flying very quickly is very deadly) flying and the infrared radiation is dangerous because it can cause skin burns and set objects on fire. Ducking and covering would protect you from most flying objects, and would prevent most skin burns. In conclusion, for the majority of people that would be affected by a nuclear strike, utilizing duck and cover could save a persons life and/or minimize injuries.

The casinos there have done very well over the years thanks to eastern Nebraskans with money to blow making the 20 - 40 min. drive to Council Bluffs, IA.

ZhangtheGreat A picnic blanket really will protect you from a nuclear attack. Nuclear attacks damage with blast, thermal energy, and radiation. Deadly in that order. They give off thermal energy as a form of light. You can survive the blast by duck and cover, and anything which blocks light protects you from the thermal energy. In other words, even a newspaper will protect you from a large effect of a nuclear attack.

People make fun of the whole "duck and cover" thing but even a thin layer provides significant protection against the thermal blast from an atomic bomb. There are several examples of people from Hiroshima and Nagasaki who suffered severe burns on exposed skin while areas covered by clothing were mostly left intact. It seems laughable but "duck and cover" does significantly increase the chance of survival for people more than a couple miles away from ground zero.
@RainbowHanryu8 жыл бұрын
+MrClickity Then the radiation will get you because thermal energy and radiation are entirely different things and nothing short of a lead suit will protect you if you are in range. Prevention of burns versus slow death from radiation poisoning.
@MrClickity8 жыл бұрын
RainbowHanryu The initial gamma ray burst has a much smaller lethal range than you might think because it rapidly disperses over a large area and doesn't significantly increase with a larger explosive yield. Most of the people who suffered radiation poisoning did so from cumulative effects of the fallout. After all, the air and water was contaminated with radioactive dust for a long time afterward. If you get out of the area quickly (preferably going upwind) you're relatively safe from that. To give you an idea: with a 20 kiloton bomb (the yield of the Nagasaki bomb) you'd suffer a fatal dose of radiation at anywhere less than 1.8 miles from ground zero but you'd suffer 3rd-degree burns within a 2.5 mile range. Increase the yield to 50 megatons and the gamma burst's effects are negligible because anyone close enough to suffer radiation poisoning from it would be burned to a crisp or completely obliterated by the blast.

@ArchonCommando8 жыл бұрын
First off it wouldn't leak like fukushima. There is a very significant difference between a working reactor and a nuclear warhead. While the warhead hasn't reached critical mass it's pretty dormant when it comes to radiation. Also i'm sorry but nuclear missiles are not stored disassembled. Even the earliest models only needed to be fueled. Since hypergolic fuels as well as solid fuels were invented it became possible to store the rockets in a ready to launch condition. And it's been done so ever since. If it comes to war those missiles will be launched at the same time the subs launch theirs. There is no "second strike" in nuclear war because with every missile you don't fire you risk the enemy being able to launch another one of theirs. Apart from the "office" where the officers that turn the keys sit the silos aren't even manned. There would be noone there to assemble the rockets.

Albert Einstein once said that "World War IV would be fought with sticks and stones," implying the purportedly imminent World War III would be so devastating that it would send us back to some primordial sort of antediluvian age. If he were still alive, I think that Einstein would revise his claim to utter extinction, given our world's overwhelming capacity for self-destruction and our seemingly complete disregard for caution. There is this riddle in astrophysics about potential reasons why we haven't discovered intelligent alien life, and this riddle (Fermi's Paradox) posits that it may be in the very nature of intelligent life to self-destruct. Maybe we're nearing the end of our road...

In countless cases companies were hacked by infected USB flashdrives lying around in a parking lot. Modern technology in combination with incompetent staff is not a good combination, and I can guarantee you that at least a few people in every nuclear base are stupid enough to fall for this. Also, last year a couple of ATM machines were hacked via USB ports, something that you wouldn't expect to be possible.Experience has shown that the majority of people greatly overestimate their technical knowledge and abilities, and in general IT security is *never* up to date except everybody involved does their job really well and has the necessary budget.

Perhaps someone has mentioned this but the #1 reason our defense forces use that "outdated" technology is because it is the only thing capable of standing up to the radiation and EMPs of keeping and using nuclear weaponry. Fun Fact: The Day After left Reagan so gobsmacked he reassessed his whole attitude on nukes. Before he ended his second term, he (or his people - he had Alzheimers by then) had negotiated MASSIVE reductions in nukes with the Soviets, and he's the only elected Republican official ever to state the goal of eliminating nukes entirely. The movie didn't cause all that, but it was the slap in the face that woke him up. Source: It's all in his diary, and he was proud of his arms reduction work with Gorby. Other fun fact: @Kyle Blank is onto something. Threads is a far more disturbing movie. It's about real people, not all-American stereotypes. They're not all terribly likable. They're just so human, and that makes it hurt so much more. And it never ends!!! The Day After sounds like a movie that ends the next day. No, it goes on for a few weeks. But Threads doesn't stop! The worst of it doesn't just happen in a few weeks. The worst of it goes on and on. Worse than either of those two, IMO, was the 1966 BBC film The War Game. It was made for broadcast in 1965 but the BBC decided it was too disturbing to air. They gave it a limited theatrical release in 66. It won the Oscar in 1967 for best documentary, though it wasn't strictly a documentary. (Very impressive for a 'foreign" film.) It's damn disturbing. The Brits know how to make low budget movies by employing the most innovative directors and absolute geniuses for actors, down to the smallest part, even (especially) the children. If you don't value a good night's sleep, I dare you to watch it!

This remains my favourite episode because I remember listening to it from outside my legendary grandparents' bedroom as they watched it on TV and it was so funny that I remembered it specifically despite the fact that they watched John regularly. They both passed away recently at the ages of 94 and 102 and left a legacy in me of enjoying Last Week Tonight and life-long learning. My grandma was a human encyclopedia who read books every day on every topic under the sun and would have conversations with my engineer grandpa, one of the first people to view Sputnik 1 from a telescope, about politics, economics, physics, you name it. My grandma would also listen to far-right radio like Rush Limbaugh and John Savage and one day my mom asked her why and she said because she "wanted to know what the enemy was saying" 😂

@MetroAndroid9 жыл бұрын
+DAK454 I always thought about it in the opposite way. Nukes are the logical conclusion of war and embody it better than any metaphor could. People don't like nukes because people don't like war. The only ones who do aren't those who've been through it, but the generation after looking back and romanticizing on their predecessors' accomplishments.

Uhm.... you CAN simply take out the network drivers, or limit the system to not have internet access while still being able to connect to the closed network. I'm fairly certain this was a known fact even five years ago, when you posted this. Ever hear of a firewall? Hell, you could keep the current network infrastructure in place, but instead of plugging the cables into grandmother's antique calculator you could plug the cables into a superior and less fail-prone system.

Maaaaan, I saw this documentary back in the early 80s that went into excruciating detail about what would happen in the event of a nuclear war and the aftermath of trying to 'live' through the resulting apocalypse. It utterly terrified me and I honestly don't know if I ever really got over it. I think my childhood innocence was destroyed that day, by a TV representation of that iconic mushroom cloud...

Threads scared the shit out of me. The Day After was horrifying enough, but Threads really stuck in my mind. This was 98 when I was in middle school and my dad was working at a place called the Weldon Spring Site about 30 minutes west of St. Louis. They buried waste left over from the uranium enrichment plant that had existed there at one time
@Raz.C3 жыл бұрын
@@coreywelton8659 Those were all great movies, but I was referring to a documentary. I can't remember much detail anymore (40 odd years later) but I do remember that he explained what kind of problem we could expect to face, then he calmly explained why no one could help us with this problem and what that would mean for us (usually a lingering, painful death), then he'd move on to the next problem we could expect to face and explain why we would find no help for that problem, too... It was so devastating because he listed all these problems we could expect to face, that I had no idea about whatsoever. As soon as he'd mention something like that, my young mind reflexively thought "It's fine. If that ever happened, we could use our garden hose to fight the fire until the fire brigade got there." Then he'd immediately explain how the water pressure in all the suburbs would drop drastically, as pumping stations would be experiencing power loss and fire engines would be overwhelmed with fighting fires in the large city centres, assuming that any fire brigades survived at all, that is... Anyway, this would happen with every new issue he brought up in the documentary. He'd talk about how we'd eventually start succumbing to radiation poisoning and why we couldn't treat ourselves for it, and the only people who could help us would be unable to help us, for [insert reasons here]... This heartbreaking nightmare of pants-shitting proportions were too much for me. It was a two hour documentary, but I was in tears by the 1.5 hour mark and couldn't finish watching it. My mum was cooking something in the kitchen, and my desperate, defeated wails of despair drew her to the door. She saw what I was watching and I think she understood. She told me not to worry, since such a war would never happen. I never really believed her. Still don't. It seems like there are enough religious crazies in the world who think they can bring about Judgement Day, if they just get everyone to fire off their nukes...

My hope (both because it would save the world and because its hilarious) would be that, in a nuclear war, the US and Russia would turn the key... only for nothing to happen. The nukes, due to poor maintenance, wouldn't function and the world would be saved by incompetence.

Pretty sure they take better care of their nukes. Given the fact that it‘s an autocratic country where failure can mean execution, meanwhile in America, failures get a cushy job in another facility.
