Nugget Garage - 13s for $1300, Project BarraTurd!

In this episode we start on our 13s for $1300 Build.
6 Teams are building various buckets of crap costing no more than $1300 total including buying the car, the goal? to run the 1/4 mile in 13.99 seconds or quicker.
This is what we will be building, a 2005 Ford BA Falcon, first we run it up on the dyno and then run it at the drag strip in stock form to get a baseline.

I'm Canadian and from watching another youtube show thought the Barra motor was like finding gold...and worth some good money.

These are the cars Barra motors come in originally, they are super common here in N/A form and are just an old family car, Turbo versions are worth a bit more and more have better rods, the later the turbo version the more they are worth as the problems were mostly fixed over time

This engine is one of 2 times I feel like we Americans got screwed by ford the first was ford making the 429 overhead cam engine a limited run the second was them not selling the Barra 6 in the states . this engine would have changed our mind set about racing for years to come but we never got it .

demonic477 Everyone says that now but when they where in production here no one bought them apart from government fleet and taxi drivers. Our police loved them and every taxi in Australia was a ford falcon. Plus we had governments with no balls placing every tariff on them to stop exporting them. Now our police are driving around in Toyota camrys and Subaru foresters😖 The Xr6 turbo version would have been a great police car all around the world.

T h e #1 reason the yanks didn't get Barras is that the i6 is to reliable. Taxis with Barras run > 1M kms with a little bit of love.

Nor Dic When I was doing my apprenticeship our workshop serviced about 10 taxis regulary will once a week every 10,000 kms. Anyway they were all XEs XFs. One of the XEs had gone around the clock 3 times, thats 3mill kms. Had a few trannys and diffs but the same engine that hadnt been touched except for services.

:) . Raced you in an EA 5 speed sedan when you had turboed the BA. Well Done !!!! Had bought a red BA a while ago for 200 and did a cat delete , 3.46 gears and locked the diff. Put a 60 shot of nitrous in it and ran a 13.89 @101. Just button operated system . Pity that nitrous is so exy.

So now you have a back-up for when your main race car's turbo explodes again, and the other breaks an axle, and the 1st back-up can't launch harder than a feather in a fart. Love the vids, especially the longer detailed vids.

Everything has to have a reasonable 2nd hand value, even if you already own it, Our turbo was actually free, but we had to put a value on it and the waste gate was $20 but we called it $50 for the sake of fair value

the btr 4 speeds in ba xr6 turbos have 3 drive modes in the transmission. d mode d when you slide it over to the left and then manual. you have to slide it over to the left in d then click it into 1st and it should hold 1st gear to around 90odd ks 98 in the book from memory. If you take it to that speed when you shift it into 2nd the torque dump will make the tires spin so i advise shifting around 80 or less and backing off the accelerator through the changes can help stop torque protection cutting in.

Spare, tools, rear and passenger seats out will surely kill 100kgs. Run with 15litres fuel max, lose some more weight, into the 14's no turbo required BAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Seriously good luck with her guys! Love it!

the newer the better, almost anything from an FG Falcon etc would be best, the early N/A BA & BF were thin rods, Gas motors are decent too

Usually they get gummed up with dirty old oil. Pull it out and clean it with brake cleaner sometimes works. But like with all hydraulic parts they can get tight or loose and not work well
