The Type 89 is a rank VI Japanese light tank with a battle rating of 8.3 (AB/RB/SB). It was introduced in Update 1.85 "Supersonic".
The full name is known as the Mitsubishi Type 89 IFV (三菱89式装甲戦闘車), the Type 89 provides an autocannon weapon combined with an anti-tank guided missile for a diverse range of attack methods.
While the Type 89's armour consists of rolled homogeneous armour, it is not any better than modern light tanks of other factions, which use double or even triple the amount of aluminium to give roughly the same amount of protection. This means that its sides and even angled turret will still be vulnerable to all autocannons and will trigger overpressure damage easily if hit in a weak spot, such as the back half of the tank.
The armour profile can be closely compared to Merkava Mk.1, it has a long hull with turret on the back, and the entirety of it is sloped as much as possible. This means that inaccurate frontal hull shots will likely bounce and this tank should always face the opponent. Unfortunately, due to how big the turret is, the bounced shell might actually fly straight into it, and there aren't any special shields or additional armour for the turret crew on this tank.
Internal module placement is rather smart on paper, with the driver and MG operator hiding on the right side of the tank, and main weapon crew hiding at the back along with ammunition, while the rest of the tank is one giant engine compartment, sealed off with a 5 mm RHA screen, meaning that most hull shots should not be able to deal overpressure damage. In reality, the means of protecting the crew and critical weak points are insufficient. Most notably, the driver isn't completely sealed away from tank's front and the turret, meaning that any chemical shot coming to suspension from the right can overpressure the entire tank. Direct artillery hits will usually destroy the tank instantly. Frontal shots also tend to destroy the gun breech, rendering the main gun useless.

Fun fact they nerfed this Type 89 5 separate gd times over the last 2 years: 1. Cut in half the total missile ammo capacity 2. Lowered the number of crew, therefore making it less survivable. 3. Significantly reduced the horizontal turret traverse + missile verticle targeting speed 4. Implemented that awful first-stage loading system that the Swedish CVs have to deal with. 5. Removed the ability to fire the missiles on the move. Was easily the best IFV at it's respective battle rating. Wish Gaijin had left it alone and moved it up to 9.0, where I played it anyway since 8.3 Japan wasn't a real lineup. I even talisman'd mine way back when, but I don't bother taking it out anymore.

Hell no I'm glad it stayed 8.3, although honestly it should probably go to 8.0 since the nerfs now unless gaijin give back the DM13 and fire on the move. 8.3 I can do, 8.7 is unfortunate cause 9.7 uptiers but still not too bad, but 9.0+ is not fun, shit sucks ass nothing but ATGM helis at map borders and cancer CAS spam you can do nothing against fuck that. Even with DM13 back should be 8.0, they need to give back it's fire on the move capability if it stays 8.3

Amazing gameplay as always nuke! As somewhat new player who is grinding japan, I am at rank 4, but the lacking void space of vehicles at certain ranks always bugs me for japan. Would you say the type 89, 16, and 93 are still solid vehicles that hold up at top tier? Like to bring along with the type 90 mbt?

Yes even at Top Tier the Type 90 is very powerful, the Type 90's Autoloader can make quick work and most of the time the enemies fuck up their shots and will not penetrate you, The Type 89 and 16 are also very powerful even tho the 16's 105 may sometimes do lackluster damage it's very agile, The Type 93 sadly falls like every other stinger vehicle, under the limited range thing, Ka-50's and so on will just shit on you

type 87 RCV absolutely shreds everything that it can pen, im telling you here it have great speed, is somewhat small figure and the gun although its only 25mm have apfsds and can single burst many on the light/early mbt its one of my favourites no question about it

Not a bad vehicle but if you are on any kinda of incline the atgms shoot straining the air. You basically have to be level to use them.

dont rely on the missles at all, you can reliable 1v1 other light vehicles as its slopped front and front engine give it superior survivability, but you still should always be looking for flanking oppurtunities
