This is perfect. Thank you so much for putting this vid out. A couple years ago I burnt out quite badly following bad advice in this space and it pushed me away from delving into this area for literally over a year. And if you don't know any better you might just think that data engineering is not for you, or just not as interesting as you'd hoped. This definitely feels a lot more practical/applicable than most vids on this topic. Hope other learners can find this before they make the same mistakes I did.

Love your content! It’s great to have someone being much more real about the career path and industry. There’s a lot glitzy content out there with not a ton if substance. Thanks

Awesome video! As someone who has been in the data world for about 10 years now, I get imposter syndrome from listening to all the data engineering “celebrities” out there. It can be overwhelming and I often get frustrated at the lack of content on actually understanding data and issues that can arise or the nuances to keep in mind when trying to build a scalable data solution. I also agree with most everything in the video except having networking come before building pipelines. If you are working with a DBA or infrastructure team, they should hopefully be able to make sure your environment is secure so you can focus on the data aspect and less about the network/security. Although, I do agree this is a beneficial skill to have to have more intelligent conversations those teams. At the end of the day, the focus should be on understanding the data you are working with, how it can provide value and being able to think ahead to design a solution that will last for many years.

Good stuff! I agree that appreciating what "data" means and what it's used for and how do people use it should be step 1, but it's not an easy that's captured by a single resource or set of tutorials. Looking forward to your videos on step 1 and networking security for cloud data :D

I guess if I were putting together a self-learning roadmap, I wouldn't expect everything to come in neatly packaged tutorials (I don't know if that's what's being promised out there). I guess this channel is my attempt to contribute to step 1, but there's a lot of good podcasts, books, and mentors out there. Just hearing/reading as much discussion by people in the data space as possible would be my approach.

Great content. Thank you for sharing. I have in mind build a project for my portfolio, starting with a configuration of a single SQL Server, then build a (FCI, AlwaysOn, Log Shipping...), then store the data from different sources (postgres, mysql, csv, json, api, site... ) as SCD1 ou 2 in this sql server high availabity infra using python and sql, them migrate the database to cloud, them replicate the high availability in cloud... Is it a good idea for a beginner data engineer?

As someone pretty new to this world of data, it would be nice to get a list of resources for #1. I’ve got a couple of podcasts and KZbin channels I’m following, but some good books, blogs, etc. would be fantastic. What do you follow to keep up to date with the changes in the data world?

I always find difficult for myself to guess if Modern Data Stack can ever replace the Traditional process. Sometimes, the scale of the data is totally a key factor for the choice and well the other times it's the use case. Just in case, on what scale you would recommend a professional with pretty good experience in Modern data stack can work on traditional systems with an ease?

Do u think we can get a job as a junior data engineer without having real world worl experience in tech I was told that even for entry level job in this field, first, an individual should land a job in data analytics or programming to get a real world sql or python experience and then one can learn essential data engineering skills and apply for such jobs

Do you really think that any serious company would give you the access to their one of the most valuable assets without making sure that you have the relevant skills and experience?
