I'm a cabinetmaker. I've never built a chair, but I do know it takes a lot of development to make a comfortable chair, and a wooden chair especially. I'm glad to hear you addressed the issue of getting in and out of an Adirondack chair easily, and redesigned the popular shape. Good job!

Its a really cool design, and I appreciate the time you put into thinking through all the aspects to make it comfortable for everyone who sits in it, and buildable/profitable for every shop that wants to make it, that is not an easy thing to do.

Thanks for this video. I just found your channel yesterday, and I have to say this is most practical Adirondack chair plan I've ever seen. I've studied/researched at least 50 different, but all quite similar Adirondacks style chairs, and always disappointed by their lack of practicality. I'm gonna be 57yrs old soon, I can't get out of chair that sets me on the ground without a great deal of stress and strain. Young and skinny people are even challenged by the typical Adirondack design. But not your chair design. I'm going to invest in your building plans and I look forward to my 1st chair.

I have ordered several of you plans, paper templates and the wood ones you had for awhile . I love this chair and yes, it was not hard to build even with my limited experience the chair came out beautiful. I used yellow pine construction grade and I believe the lumber was close to $200, the one I did, took some time, I didn't rush it and my shop isn't very efficiently set up. So many cheap chairs out there, makes me nervous to ask so much for them even as beautiful as they are.. I can't get redwood and cedar is very hard to get here in Florida. We have a local hardwood store and I would really like to build one out of cypress but the wood is just so expensive! Your plans are fantastic and very easy to follow!

@drb4074
@drb4074 2 жыл бұрын
Think of it this way: How many hours did it take you to complete the project? If you sold that chair for, let's say $400. You already acknowledge that lumber alone cost you $200 (prices in Biden's America, what can you do?), and probably additional costs on hardware as well as having to possess tools to do it (those cost you money at one time). So you would still be pulling maybe 150 dollars in profit. If it took you 10 hours to build, that is 15 dollars an hour. Nothing to sneeze at, but also not exactly Rockefeller money. You need to be realistic about what time, skill, and effort you are putting in. DON'T sell yourself cheap. There are buyers for such a nice chair out there. You say it yourself, there are so many cheap garbage chairs out there that won't last more than a season or two. People get what they pay for. These chairs here, if it's properly finished, look as if they could easily stand up for decades if cared for. People that want to pay cheap, get cheap products that don't last. People that want quality that lasts are willing to pay for it. It's something artists often have to learn about. Your time and skill are assets that you must value. Because there are people that disregard your time and skill (which takes time to develop) if you allow them to undervalue you. This doesn't mean price yourself out of the market. It means don't be afraid to charge what's worth your time.

Yes. Please keep these kind of videos coming. Often woodworkers show how to make something, and they do make a living at it. But without a frame of reference, it's hard for us amateurs/hobbyists to know what to ask for in pricing their product. What made you settle on $450 a chair? Do you use a set labor rate? Do you use materials costs with a multiplier? A combination or something else? Thanks for your videos. I've made several of the items you've done and been very happy with them. Thank you.

I've been making and selling cedar Adirondack chairs for the last 5 years full time. It's a great business to get into. We've recently moved into a larger shop and upgraded most of our equipment including a Laguna 4x8 CNC. We are currently make 600-800 chairs each year. It takes a while to find your market but once you do the main problem you'll have is fulfilling orders.

Hi James, thanks for the videos and the great Ideas. I first found your channel a couple of years ago and ended up making the Ultimate Table Saw Sled after that. It has been a wonderful item to have around the shop. Last year I saw the chair plans when you first did the video on that and thought it would be a fun and possibly good money making project but didn't get past the thinking stage. When you rereleased the video a few weeks back I realized it could not only be a good shop project and something my family could benefit from (we could use a set of chairs). And with that in mind I bought the plans and the paper templates. I showed them to my grandson who just turned 11 and he and I are going to make the first prototypes. Once we get going we will also be getting the rocker and the kid size plans as well as the tables. Once I sell my first set I plan to as a thankyou to you also buy one of your Thor's hammers. I thought you would get another sale and I would get a great mallet. I currently have a home business cutting glass and fixing windows as I get older I am taking on less big glass projects and since I already have traffic through my shop, having sample chairs would be a good addition to my line. I made my first wood project when I was a teen with my dad.

Acknowledging a problem, coming up with a solution, and then letting people know and see you’ve found a resolution for said problem/opportunity. I thank you for sharing your wisdom and knowledge with the newbies such as myself. You helped build the inspiration I needed to quit my career of building and upgrading telecommunication networks for 30 years to starting a business woodworking. Sending good vibes to you and yours. I appreciate you! Thank you FYI, I post very few comments, however I was compelled to say something to let you know that even the quite, reserved and shy (on this type of platform)appreciate you and what you do to open so many doors to opportunities and successes that most people don’t even know existed for them. I really enjoy the narrative, how you market these products, and how you price them. I would love to see an overview like this on many of the other products you have made, jewelry boxes, etc. Also, it would be interesting to see how you came up with a price for any of these items. I have often found that I either overcharge or undercharge, and rarely hit it right for consistent sales. Thanks for sharing this

Another great video to add to the collection. I really appreciate the way you explained things and your marketing ideas. If possible in the future could you do update on your pass videos on marketing and pricing. I know a lot of woodworkers don't do this but I find it very beneficial to inspire and keep motivation. Keep up the great work and look forward to more videos.

I love this! I downloaded almost all of the plans! My nephew and I are going to make the Adirondack chairs soon. Trying to earn money to get more tools. Not sure if you are still picking someone to send the predone templates to... but would love to put my name in the drawing:) Thank you! Molly

Bought the plans. First one turned out great. Do you have a design for a folding version of this chair? That would be awesome!

Hello, thanks for sharing, just got the plans and I bought the templates and made templates out of 1/8” ply. I had to rewatch the video for the seat, I was confused on the slates, I put the 6 degree on both ends and I was looking at it like how does this work, then I seen the video where you put together then did seat slats and marked a line, so I now get it lol, time to sand thanks again

Yes, I liked the video. After I watched the build video, I told my wife I wanted to order the planes and start making some to sell. Unfortunately I haven’t yet. I currently have a lot of projects going. Hopefully it will happen soon. Love the style of the chair an now you have tables to go with it oh my goodness. I need to get on the outdoor furniture bandwagon.
