@@studiocalder818 Have had both 1300 Alfa and 1.3 Fulvia, I prefer the Alfa motor for drivability and ease of maintenance. No-one other than Lancia really thought the narrow V4 was the answer to a question anyone was asking....Saab considered it to update its 96 but when cost was factored in chose the Ford V4 instead.

30 years ago I helped a friend of mine strip his Fulvia in order to restore it when I lived in Northern Ireland - we both worked for Short Brothers as aircraft tooling engineers. I moved to England to do a post graduate course at Loughborough and then stayed over here and I don't know if he got it finished. I remember the wonderful engineering and the complexity of the body structure. The (rear) c-pillars can be that thin due to the amount of ribbing below the window line to give them extra stiffness and the engine and gearbox subframe was a masterpiece of design - you can remove the entire engine/gearbox/subframe assembly by unbolting it and lifting the front of the body. I'm not sure about the radiator but even the gear lever can stay attached to this assembly. At the time, he also had a Fiat Strada Abarth and I had a Lancia 2000ie (Beta) Coupe. We were mad! 😂🤣

The handling on Fulvias is brilliant. On twisty country roads they are incredibly rewarding and swift. You forgot to stay that they are effectively a twin OHC cross-flow engine with twin two choke carburettors, an aluminium head and crankcase and a small light cast iron block. They are particularly respected by engineers who are keen drivers. Glad to see that you appreciate the qualities.

A second episode is needed... Firstly, it is difficult to ignore Lancia's rally heritage with the Fulvia (its major competition success after essentially equipping Ferrari with F1 cars in the mid 50s). Secondly, if the Fulvia won the 1972 Monte Carlo (just go and look at the competition from Porsche, Alpine, Ford...) it was down to the very clever engineering. Lastly, the styling and contrasting finishes are marvellous.

Time flies - it was back in about 2004. But they didn't have the finances to put it into production.... because at that time, FIAT were rescuing Chrysler over in America having bought them....and plowed alot of money into them. They didn't have enough money to invest in a 21st century re -imagining of Fulvia. But yes, it was a real lost opportunity. So sad. It would have been an instant hit, and may well have revived Lancia and out them back in the big time. FIAT spent too much trying to rescue Chrysler - a maker of dull, ugly, poor to drive cars that no one outside America was interested in. And they still aren't! Honestly (FIAT) should have just let Chrysler go to the wall. Lancia cars (and the maker's rich heritage and racing pedigree) are much more worth saving than Chryslers ever will be.

I have owned a ‘69 S1 175O GTV and as well a ‘69 Fiat AC 124 Sport (still own this some 42 yrs later), but alas I have never owned a Fulvia..I did drive one some years ago and yes it’s a jewel. In my view all 3 of these are the natural competitor to each other. Like the Fulvia, the original 124 Sport is a delight to drive, precise, nicely made with lovely details and a superb twincam engine. It too is pretty in the same way to the Fulvia. For me, the 1750 GTV though has the most engaging driving feel though and the sweetest gearbox. I am 6.1 and never had any issues with the driving position, unlike perhaps other drivers.

Great video - you really captured the essence of these cars. I’ve owned two over the years, both in the 1980s, long after they were new, but even so I used them as an everyday car. The first was a series 1: even higher quality than the later cars. Absolutely gorgeous thing to drive; it felt like it was hewn from a solid block, yet delicate jewel- and watch-like mechanicals. Way higher quality than just about anything else on the road. Despite the small engine, it really moved, especially as it handled so well. The gearbox was a delight to use: only issue was it was 4-speed, with larger than ideal gaps in the ratios (mind you, revving the engine to compensate was never really a problem). Later, I had a Series 2 Zagato 1600, which was similar, but with weird looks (which I loved), more powerful, giving a different character, yet it had definitely lost some of the Lancia-era quality. A very rare car too, especially in RHD, there’s an excellent series of videos on Harry’s Garage on the restoration of identical one to mine. Safe to say his one is shaping up to be in a different league to the condition of mine when I had it. A tough choice between the two, but I think if I could have one back I’d go for the Series 1, even with the smaller less-powerful engine. It was just a more pleasurable drive. Anyway, thanks again for the video.

A neighbor had one in the apartment block I grew up in, which was in London’s Holland park. This was up to 1973, before I relocated to what was then Berkshire. The apartment block in question was quite fancy and there were all kinds of beautiful cars of the time parked outside (Jensen, Lamborghinis, E-Types galore, even a bubble car although I am not sure now which one- my father was in a Mark 10 Jag). The neighbor in question was an elderly lady, well she seemed elderly to me, who lived with a ‘female companion’ and I think did illustrations for children’s books. There must have been quite a bit of private wealth there too because they lived very well. They were respectable and charming, and I would spend time visiting with them. I now realize they were in fact discreetly living as an all female couple in the way people did in those days, but had no idea at the time. I think they liked children and had none of their own. Lovely ladies. But OMG that car! I always knew it had something about it. Lucy only ever drove it once a week to get to her weekend cottage at Box Hill in Surrey, and I think looking back that car was where her true alter ego would come out. The perfect cover for a respectable, English, maturing illustrator of children’s books who beneath it all was in fact a full blown, multi culti, metrosexual ‘it’ girl of her time. Just the right mix of modesty, class and exotic. No coincidence that the car I most miss of all the cars I have been through over the years was my 1980s Lancia HPE 2000ie. Not as classy, and Fiat, but oh my, it oozed a certain kind of class and what a joy to drive!

Look at Harry's Garage for an example of what a full restoration can entail...when done properly. I've long admired these-they are rare and therefore $$$ in the USA for a good one. VW later nicked that idea for their V5, V6 and W16. I bought a LHD S2 Fulvia Coupé 1.3S for £500 in the late 1980s. The sunroof had leaked and the passenger floorpan had rotted out but we fabricated a new one which you'd be hard pressed to differentiate from the original. Otherwise, that car was rust free. It was tremendous fun to drive, even as a 1.3 and always put a smile on my face. The handling was superlative too. It took me to France twice but on the last trip, having gone around the Loire Valley without hitch, on the M25 at Clacket Lane Services, the head gasket went. Fortunately I had bought a new old stock head from Harry Manning in Heath End, Farnham and was able to get the car back on the road again. The 1.6HF was originally an homologation special and is a spectacular car. Most have been snapped up and restored by now but you can still get a reasonably good 1.3S for sensible money. My own personal caveat is to avoid the much more Fiatised S3 cars. They are still proper Fulvias but the eyebrows for the UK and US markets spoils the front end and the cheaper fabric seats are just a bit naff and the thicker rubberised steering wheel detracts from the interior.

The Fulvia experience is why I'll never part with my owned-since-new 2005 MINI R50 (the non-supercharged variant). FWD, light, not a lot of horsepower but handles like it's on rails, FEELS fast as heck, is simple to maintain, and puts a smile on your face every time you drive it. If you have a car that does that for you, no matter the age or make, HANG ON TO IT!

Good review. As you mentioned at various point the Series 1 is the last proper, full blown Lancia. For example the differences with the switch gear is night and day from the push button starter to the steering operated full beam and horn. Buy one, S1 if possible, and you won't be disappointed.

I am head over heels in love with this car. As you said, “so classy”, and to my mind, such a sense of romance. One can imagine zipping about the crowed streets of Rome in the 1960’s in your skinny lapel suit and wrap-a-round sunglasses with some cutie in a miniskirt in the passenger seat.

The best Lancia was the Delta in all its models from the humble 1.3 fwd, all the way to the two liter supercharged/turbocharged 4wd Integrali. All it lacked was rustproofing!

Always loved these when Lancia Fulvias were a serious rallying cars with a list of drivers that would class as a who's who of the mid sixties and early seventies. As you said the Minis set the trend for front wheel drive rallying success and Lancia were never far behind and went on to greater things as we know. Saw them several times on the RAC of the time. Fond memories. BTW I love the trips up and down the Fosse, so lovely to see that it is still pretty quiet.. I used to do 30 odd miles on it every morning and evening. Just had one set of traffic lights for a narrow bridge.🚦

Though I find the 105-series GTs of Alfa/Bertone really handsome, my general preference would go to the fulvia coupé and I think the key word here is intriguing. Like you say the car stems from a background of engineering, innovation with the FWD-layout and V4-engine (Lancia was the Italian pioneer on FWD btw with the flavia of 1960) and quality which is an attractive idea in itself and there are its contradictions by current standards. I mean, aren't we always told FWD is by nature less sporty than RWD? And indeed the fulvia looks a little "delicate", if you will. But that didn't stop its HF-versions (if you could ever find a fanalone-version? If not, buy the excellent Auto Art-scalemodel of it) to score numerous wins in rallies and becoming world champion in 1972 or '73. And there's something about its styling, specifically the fact that it was inspired by the shape of a motorboat. All those things combined make it somehow more special to me than the Alfa. Of course, to each their own taste. I just found it a delight to see this video passing by in my youtube-feed, so many thanks! On the topic of classic car prices having stopped climbing: isn't that really rather good news? To me at least, the rising values of recent years were becoming a bit excessive.

Giacomo!!! You go on testing "my" cars. I had a Fulvia Coupè and I have been an idiot to sell her to a friend.... It was a mk 1 Rallye 1,3 HF,standard without bumpers, with aluminium bonnet, trunk and doors, and with plexiglass rear windows. As all the 1,3 HF it was red (rosso amaranto Montebello),with the yellow and blue central stripes. I completely restored her and kept her for 12 years, and never had a problem. In winter I often used her to reach my family for weekends in the Dolomites, driving during the night with winter tyres, and the yellow racing lights Cibiè Oscar.... I was,and still am,in love with that car. Beautiful, light, nice to drive,is really a classic with a great history. And the same is with normal, non HF,Fulvias, more comfortable but equally nice to drive. If you find a good one and buy a Fulvia Coupè,you'll never regret it. And driving a Fulvia in a winter night, with some snow, will make you feel like Sandro Munari at the Montecarlo,or Harry Kallstrom at the RAC rally that he won twice,in 1969 and 1970.

Back in about 1973 I was working in Toronto and had a chance to buy a a 1968 Fulvia Series 1 for about $400. Yeah, those were the days. I took it out for a test drive and to this day it was one of the most exciting and nimble cars I've ever driven. I thought it was a 1600 cc engine but you say that came later, although I don't know if the ones exports to Canada and the USA had the bigger engine from the start. I can still remember coming round a clover leaf off the 401 at 80 mph, cornering dead flat and with three of us in it. It sure didn't seem slow to me at the time! Nah, I didn't buy it...Italian cars were looked at as pretty exotic and unreliable in those days...but it sure was a blast and I have to confirm everything you've said in your review.

My father had 2 of the zagato models followed by the 1.6 HF Lusso, on which the cornering was amazing, it would go around traffic islands at speeds over 60 mph. I had a series 2 in 1980 which suffered from rust unfortunately, but they were way ahead of anything at the time and very fast to drive for the period, nothing else could touch them. The HF Lusso was something else, if you could try to find one to test you would be amazed. Great review thanks for doing it.

In its own way the Mk1 MR2 NA compares - it is greater than the sum of its parts, the Yamaha engine is willing, if not fast, and they took way more care with the design and engineering, than they had to. An amazing car, that makes you smile every time you drive it.

Live in South Africa I was working my first job in 91. When I bought mine red with white interior. Somebody had fitted four giant Hella lights on the front and it looked like a rally car had to have it. Didn't even bother to test drive it. My father wasn't impressed kept muttering about Italian reliability and don't phone him when it broke down. It was a fantastic car went well for a 1.3. Crazy part was driving it on asphalt roads was okay. But throw it onto dirt farm roads and mud it was a little monster and handled so well. I regret selling it only ever seen two in south africa since in the last 30 years.

Thank you for this fantastic video. The Fulvia is Indeed a fabulous car. A low profile, de luxe sport vehicle for people not willing to flaunt, to show off. The Stratos was somehow a Fulvia in Steroids. A relative owned a Fulvia and knew how to take full advantage of the vehicle -- the front-wheel drive made all the difference on wet roads and around the bends. Could you plz produce a vídeo about the Lancia Flaminia, 4 doors, a super car from the early sixties ? Great review. Perhaps the engineers and designers had rallying in mind? Following the success of Saab with the engine and gearbox ahead of front wheels. (Unlike Citroen and Renault) Then followed the Mini also with good weight distribution. Then there was the Lancia Flavia which I had after a Saab 93. Flavia flat four front wheel drive legendary handling but a complete nightmare to service; nothing accessible! These cars lead the way so that today most cars are front wheel drive best using different technique.
