30 American trainers (AT-6's and BT 13's) were rebuilt to look like Japanese planes for this movie. At least a dozen glassfibre mockups of P-40's were created. 4 real PBY Catalinas were blown up. A complete, full size Japanese battleship mockup was built on a beach for the opening scenes. About a third of the carrier Akagi was built in full size next to the battleship. The stern half of an American battleship was built in full scale in Pearl Harbor. No bloody CGI in those days...

The B-17 that landed "wheels up" was not badly damaged. It returned to its forest-fighting duties, but was destroyed in a fatal crash some years later. A funny thing is, that all the Japanese planes, except for one "Zero" and one "Kate" on the static "Akagi" set filmed in Japan, are stock T-6's with only three blade propellers, drop tanks and landing gear doors added. At least some of them had their wings cut so they could be folded.

Right. A funny thing is that NO aircraft shown in the movie, except for a few of the derelict PBY's, were of a version that existed at Pearl Harbor in December 1941. All the Japanese planes were "fake", all the American planes, except for the Stearman were of later versions and it was not a Stearman, it was a monoplane trainer (I've forgotten the type) with a much younger female pilot, that met the Japanese armada in real life.

My grandpa is flying that P40. He also flew them over china with the flying tigers. This is the only footage on the internet I've found thus far and it's soundtrack is absolutely horrible. Kinda sad...
